A Wake Up Call

7 Nov

A renewed threat of imminent terrorist attacks by al-Qaida has prompted many nations, including the United States, to close many embassies and consulates in the Middle East and Africa. Intelligence agents have intercepted communications of potentially serious threats against Western nations this week. Out of an abundance of caution, the U.S. State Department is keeping 19 posts closed, including missions sites in Amman, Cairo, and Tripoli.

This move comes about a year after Islamic militants attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which took the lives of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador. Although intelligence information has not pinpointed a particular threat or specific targets, enough communications have been gathered to raise warning flags. A press release on the department’s website issues a worldwide travel alert to remain in effect through the end of August.

Likewise, Christians have been issued an alert, as citizens of the heavenly kingdom, that our enemy, Satan, has continued plans to attack followers of Jesus Christ, not just in the Middle East or North Africa, but in every nation on our planet. The Bible says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Jesus teaches, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). As we near the end of time, Christians are warned, “Before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons” (Luke 21:12), and, “I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute” (Luke 11:49).

Because disciples of Jesus are ambassadors of our heavenly Father, we have a dangerous mission. We do not live in a safe world. Our health, finances, and even our lives will be threatened at times as we carry the gospel to every corner of the globe. Amazing Facts reaches into risky places where Christians live among these dangers. Our literature, evangelists, website information, Bible teachers, and media presentations have pierced dark corners to spread light.

Would you join Amazing Facts in praying for help in touching nations and people who live in fear of violence? Will you join hands with us in upholding ambassadors for Christ who put their lives at risk to teach others about the Bible? Jesus says that not only will He never leave us or forsake us in our work (Matthew 28:20), but that we should also “pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

It’s wise to live with some caution in sharing Christ with others (see Matthew 10:23), but we cannot close our doors. The strife we see today is a wake-up call to earnestly pray and firmly stand. We must press ahead with our mission to tell God’s message to “every nation, tribe, tongue, and people” (Revelation 14:6), terrorists or not.

News that matters

Catholics filled Westminster Cathedral on Saturday to venerate the relics of St Anthony of Padua.

The arrival of the saint’s relics, which comprised a small piece of petrified flesh and a layer of skin from the saint’s cheek, was part of a UK tour marking the 750th anniversary of the discovery of St Anthony’s incorrupt tongue.

Following their visit to Westminster Cathedral, the relics’ tour concluded at St Peter’s Italian Church in Clerkenwell.

It is estimated that the relics have attracted 250,000 people across the UK during their tour.

Another Roman Catholic website has published the following report on how the “Holy tongue” was recovered:

When the crypt was opened, they found that the saint’s body had been reduced to dust and bones, but his tongue was intact and life-like.

This was taken a sign from God confirming the ardent gifts of preaching and teaching that Saint…
