Why all the Natural Disasters?

19 Feb

“Why are we getting all these natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes, floods and tornados?” This is a question on many people’s minds, because as you may have noticed, this world seems to be tearing apart at the seams. Take a look at Bible prophecy news and you will see new reports virtually every week about some natural disaster. Newsweek’s editor, Tina Brown said … “International mayhem increases at every turn.”

It’s no good looking to the mass media, or to man for the answers to these disasters. The only place we can get a reliable answer as to what is going on and why, is from the Bible, and specifically, the last book of the Bible, Revelation!

Revelation 7:1-3 …’And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.’

“The four winds of the earth” represent worldwide natural disasters, war and conflict, and in His mercy, God, through the four mighty angels has been holding back the tide of evil forces and preventing “all hell” from breaking loose upon this earth. But as the end times unfold and we draw closer to that “great day” when Jesus returns at the second coming, the angels begin to loosen their grip on the “four winds” and allow satanic forces to unleash their fury upon this world. This is the real reason why natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, tornadoes etc., are increasing.

“The restraining Spirit of God is even now being withdrawn from the world. Hurricanes, storms, tempests, fire and flood, disasters by sea and land, follow each other in quick succession. Science seeks to explain all these. The signs thickening around us, telling of the near approach of the Son of God, are attributed to any other than the true cause. Men cannot discern the sentinel angels restraining the four winds that they shall not blow until the servants of God are sealed; but when God shall bid His angels loose the winds, there will be such a scene of strife as no pen can picture.” (E.White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 408)

Man in his “wisdom” may try to explain all these disasters, but the truth is, God is even now starting to withdraw His restraining Spirit from the world, and soon, once the angels have let go of the “four winds”, then we will see a time of trouble that no man in history has ever seen … Daniel 12:1 …’And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.’

But Why?!

Why would a loving God who seeks to save the lost withdraw His Spirit from the earth and allow Satan to unleash his fury? The answer is quite simple. In every country and every city and every island, the majority of earth’s population are openly, and recklessly breaking the commandments of God, which He wrote Himself on those two lumps of rock (Exodus 31:18). Paul, in Ephesians 4:30 tells us to “grieve NOT the Holy Spirit”. Unfortunately, this is exactly what the majority of earth’s inhabitants are doing everyday.

In Genesis 6:3 God reveals that his “spirit shall not always strive with man”, which is why He is withdrawing His restraining hand from this world. According to God’s book, the Bible, breaking the ten commandments is sin … 1 John 3:4 …’Sin is the transgression of the law.’ And yet “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). Christ Jesus took the penalty for our sin and died in our place so that we may have life. And yet the majority of the world continues to reject this awesome love from our Creator!

So if we repent of our sins, confess them to God and believe in Christ Jesus as Saviour, then as 1 John 1:9 says … “He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Those who choose to do this in these end times we live in, those who give their hearts and lives to Christ Jesus and obey each of the ten commandments of God, will receive the seal of God (Revelation 7:2-3) and will be protected when the four winds are finally and totally released and Satan has full control of this world for a short time.

As horrible as these natural disasters of earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, fires and tornados are, God has a purpose in allowing these terrible things to happen. In a nutshell, He is desperately trying to get our attention. REPENT! is His urgent plea to the world in the midst of these disasters. Yet few of us seem to listen to His loving plea!

Now a careful study of Bible prophecy concerning the end times will reveal that misguided religious leaders will one day soon misinterpret these events and claim that “God is punishing human beings for their refusal to keep Sunday sacred.”, even though the ten commandments plainly state that the sabbath day is the seventh day of the week (our Saturday). If any leader brings a law, ie., the Sunday law into effect, which goes against the Word and Command of God, then you know you can reject it, as our allegiance to God comes first.

“On October 8, 1871, the famous evangelist D.L. Moody was preaching to an immense crowd in Chicago about the importance of sinners making commitments to Jesus Christ. “Call for decisions now!” was the urgent impression of the Holy Spirit to the preacher. But Moody hesitated. Instead, he told his spellbound hearers that he would call for decisions next week. That crowd never returned. During the closing song the loud sirens of fire trucks declared that the Great Chicago Fire had begun. It blazed for two days, killing hundreds. Oh how Moody later wished he had made that appeal.” (Steve Wohlberg, Whitehorsemedia)

Friend, deadly disasters can strike at anytime. And in His mercy God is calling us to repentance, so that we may be saved and enjoy eternal life with Christ Jesus. A time is coming soon when all these disasters and troubles will be gone forever. But we can only have hope if we give our hearts to Christ. Don’t miss out on a glorious life to come. Give your life to Jesus today!

A Warning Rejected.

28 Jan

In preaching the doctrine of the second advent, William Miller
and his associates had labored with the sole purpose of arousing
men to a preparation for the judgment. They had sought to awaken
professors of religion to the true hope of the church, and to
their need of a deeper Christian experience; and they labored also
to awaken the unconverted to the duty of immediate repentance
and conversion to God. “They made no attempt to convert men
to a sect or party in religion. Hence they labored among all
parties and sects, without interfering with their organization or
discipline.”618
“In all my labors,” said Miller, “I never had the desire or
thought to establish any separate interest from that of existing
denominations, or to benefit one at the expense of another. I
thought to benefit all. Supposing that all Christians would rejoice
in the prospect of Christ’s coming, and that those who could
not see as I did would not love any the less those who should
embrace this doctrine, I did not conceive there would ever be any
necessity for separate meetings. My whole object was a desire to
convert souls to God, to notify the world of a coming judgment,
and to induce my fellow-men to make that preparation of heart
which will enable them to meet their God in peace. The great
majority of those who were converted under my labors united

[376] with the various existing churches.”619
As his work tended to build up the churches, it was for a
time regarded with favor. But as ministers and religious leaders
decided against the advent doctrine, and desired to suppress all
agitation of the subject, they not only opposed it from the pulpit,
but denied their members the privilege of attending preaching
upon the second advent, or even of speaking of their hope in the
social meetings of the church. Thus the believers found themselves
in a position of great trial and perplexity. They loved their
churches, and were loath to separate from them; but as they saw
the testimony of God’s word suppressed, and their right to investigate
the prophecies denied, they felt that loyalty to God forbade
them to submit. Those who sought to shut out the testimony
of God’s word, they could not regard as constituting the church
of Christ, “the pillar and ground of the truth.” Hence they felt
themselves justified in separating from their former connection.
In the summer of 1844 about fifty thousand withdrew from the
churches.
About this time a marked change was apparent in most of the
churches throughout the United States. There had been for many
years a gradual but steadily increasing conformity to worldly
practices and customs, and a corresponding decline in real spiritual
life; but in that year there were evidences of a sudden and
marked declension in nearly all the churches of the land. While
none seemed able to suggest the cause, the fact itself was widely
noted and commented upon, by both the press and the pulpit.
At a meeting of the presbytery of Philadelphia, Mr. Barnes,
author of a commentary widely used, and pastor of one of the
leading churches in that city, “stated that he had been in the
ministry for twenty years, and never, till the last communion,
had he administered the ordinance without receiving more or
less into the church. But now there are no awakenings, no

conversions, not much apparent growth in grace in professors,
and none come to his study to converse about the salvation of
their souls. With the increase of business, and the brightening [377]
prospects of commerce and manufacture, there is an increase of
worldly-mindedness. Thus it is with all the denominations.”620
In the month of February of the same year, Professor Finney,
of Oberlin College, said: “We have had the fact before our minds,
that, in general, the Protestant churches of our country, as such,
were either apathetic or hostile to nearly all the moral reforms of
the age. There are partial exceptions, yet not enough to render the
fact otherwise than general. We have also another corroborated
fact: the almost universal absence of revival influence in the
churches. The spiritual apathy is almost all-pervading, and is
fearfully deep; so the religious press of the whole land testifies….
Very extensively, church-members are becoming devotees of
fashion,—join hands with the ungodly in parties of pleasure, in
dancing, in festivities, etc…. But we need not expand this painful
subject. Suffice it that the evidence thickens and rolls heavily
upon us, to show that the churches generally are becoming sadly
degenerate. They have gone very far from the Lord, and He has
withdrawn Himself from them.”
And a writer in the Religious Telescope testified: “We have
never witnessed such a general declension of religion as at the
present. Truly, the church should awake, and search into the
cause of this affliction; for as an affliction every one that loves
Zion must view it. When we call to mind how ‘few and far between’
cases of true conversion are, and the almost unparalleled
impertinence and hardness of sinners, we almost involuntarily
exclaim, ‘Has God forgotten to be gracious? or, Is the door of
mercy closed?’ ”
Such a condition never exists without cause in the church
itself. The spiritual darkness which falls upon nations, upon
620 Congregational Journal, May 23, 1844.
392 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
churches and individuals, is due, not to an arbitrary withdrawal
of the succors of divine grace on the part of God, but to neglect or
[378] rejection of divine light on the part ofmen. A striking illustration
of this truth is presented in the history of the Jewish people in the
time of Christ. By their devotion to the world and forgetfulness
of God and His word, their understanding had become darkened,
their hearts earthly and sensual. Thus they were in ignorance
concerning Messiah’s advent, and in their pride and unbelief they
rejected the Redeemer. God did not even then cut off the Jewish
nation from a knowledge of, or a participation in, the blessings
of salvation. But those who rejected the truth lost all desire for
the gift of Heaven. They had “put darkness for light, and light for
darkness,” until the light which was in them became darkness;
and how great was that darkness!
It suits the policy of Satan, that men should retain the forms
of religion, if but the spirit of vital godliness is lacking. After
their rejection of the gospel, the Jews continued zealously to
maintain their ancient rites, they rigorously preserved their national
exclusiveness, while they themselves could not but admit
that the presence of God was no longer manifest among them.
The prophecy of Daniel pointed so unmistakably to the time of
Messiah’s coming, and so directly foretold His death, that they
discouraged its study, and finally the rabbis pronounced a curse
on all who should attempt a computation of the time. In blindness
and impenitence, the people of Israel for eighteen hundred
years have stood, indifferent to the gracious offers of salvation,
unmindful of the blessings of the gospel, a solemn and fearful
warning of the danger of rejecting light from heaven.
Wherever the cause exists, the same results will follow. He
who deliberately stifles his convictions of duty because it interferes
with his inclinations, will finally lose the power to
distinguish between truth and error. The understanding becomes
darkened, the conscience callous, the heart hardened, and the
soul is separated from God. Where the message of divine truth
21. A Warning Rejected. 393
is spurned or slighted, there the church will be enshrouded in
darkness; faith and love grow cold, and estrangement and [379]
dissension enter. Church-members center their interests and energies
in worldly pursuits, and sinners become hardened in their
impenitence.
The first angel’s message of Revelation 14, announcing the
hour of God’s judgment, and calling upon men to fear and worship
Him, was designed to separate the professed people of God
from the corrupting influences of the world, and to arouse them
to see their true condition of worldliness and backsliding. In this
message, God had sent to the church a warning, which, had it
been accepted, would have corrected the evils that were shutting
them away from Him. Had they received the message from
heaven, humbling their hearts before the Lord, and seeking in
sincerity a preparation to stand in His presence, the Spirit and
power of God would have been manifested among them. The
church would again have reached that blessed state of unity, faith,
and love, which existed in apostolic days, when the believers
“were of one heart and of one soul,” and “spake the word of God
with boldness,” when “the Lord added to the church daily such
as should be saved.”621
If God’s professed people would receive the light as it shines
upon them from His word, they would reach that unity for which
Christ prayed, that which the apostle describes, “the unity of the
Spirit in the bond of peace.” “There is,” he says, “one body, and
one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one
Lord, one faith, one baptism.”622
Such were the blessed results experienced by those who
accepted the advent message. They came from different denominations,
and their denominational barriers were hurled to the
ground; conflicting creeds were shivered to atoms; the unscriptural
hope of a temporal millennium was abandoned, false views

622 Eph. 4:3-5.
394 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
of the second advent were corrected, pride and conformity to
the world were swept away; wrongs were made right; hearts
were united in the sweetest fellowship, and love and joy reigned
[380] supreme. If this doctrine did this for the few who did receive it,
it would have done the same for all, if all had received it.
But the churches generally did not accept the warning. Their
ministers, who, as “watchmen unto the house of Israel,” should
have been the first to discern the tokens of Jesus’ coming, had
failed to learn the truth, either from the testimony of the prophets
or from the signs of the times. As worldly hopes and ambitions
filled the heart, love for God and faith in His word had grown
cold; and when the advent doctrine was presented, it only aroused
their prejudice and unbelief. The fact that the message was, to
a great extent, preached by laymen, was urged as an argument
against it. As of old, the plain testimony of God’s word was
met with the inquiry, “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees
believed?” And finding how difficult a task it was to refute the
arguments drawn from the prophetic periods, many discouraged
the study of the prophecies, teaching that the prophetic books
were sealed, and were not to be understood. Multitudes, trusting
implicitly to their pastors, refused to listen to the warning; and
others, though convinced of the truth, dared not confess it, lest
they should be “put out of the synagogue.” The message which
God had sent for the testing and purification of the church, revealed
all too surely how great was the number who had set their
affections on this world rather than upon Christ. The ties which
bound them to earth were stronger than the attractions heavenward.
They chose to listen to the voice of worldly wisdom, and
turned away from the heart-searching message of truth.
In refusing the warning of the first angel, they rejected the
means which Heaven had provided for their restoration. They
spurned the gracious messenger that would have corrected the
evils which separated them from God, and with greater eagerness
they turned to seek the friendship of the world. Here was the
21. A Warning Rejected. 395
cause of that fearful condition of worldliness, backsliding, and
spiritual death which existed in the churches in 1844. [381]
In Revelation 14, the first angel is followed by a second,
proclaiming, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because
she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication.”623 The term “Babylon” is derived from “Babel,”
and signifies confusion. It is employed in Scripture to designate
the various forms of false or apostate religion. In Revelation
17, Babylon is represented as a woman,—a figure which is
used in the Bible as the symbol of a church, a virtuous woman
representing a pure church, a vile woman an apostate church.
In the Bible the sacred and enduring character of the relation
that exists between Christ and His church is represented by the
union of marriage. The Lord has joined His people to Himself
by a solemn covenant, He promising to be their God, and they
pledging themselves to be His, and His alone. He declares, “I
will betroth thee unto Me forever; yea, I will betroth thee unto
Me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in loving-kindness,
and in mercies.”624 And again, “I am married unto you.”625 And
Paul employs the same figure in the New Testament when he
says, “I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present
you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”626
The unfaithfulness of the church to Christ in permitting her
confidence and affection to be turned from Him, and allowing
the love of worldly things to occupy the soul, is likened to the
violation of the marriage vow. The sin of Israel in departing
from the Lord is presented under this figure; and the wonderful
love of God which they thus despised is touchingly portrayed: “I
sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the
Lord God, and thou becamest Mine.” “And thou wast exceeding

beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom. And thy renown
went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect
through My comeliness, which I had put upon thee…. But thou
didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because
[382] of thy renown.” “As a wife treacherously departeth from her
husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with Me, O house of
Israel, saith the Lord;” “as a wife that committeth adultery, which
taketh strangers instead of her husband.”627
In the New Testament, language very similar is addressed to
professed Christians who seek the friendship of the world above
the favor of God. Says the apostle James: “Ye adulterers and
adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is
enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the
world is the enemy of God.”
The woman (Babylon) of Revelation 17, is described as “arrayed
in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and
precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand
full of abominations and filthiness: … and upon her forehead
was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the mother
of harlots.” Says the prophet, “I saw the woman drunken with
the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of
Jesus.” Babylon is further declared to be “that great city, which
reigneth over the kings of the earth.”628 The power that for so
many centuries maintained despotic sway over the monarchs of
Christendom, is Rome. The purple and scarlet color, the gold
and precious stones and pearls, vividly picture the magnificence
and more than kingly pomp affected by the haughty see of Rome.
And no other power could be so truly declared “drunken with
the blood of the saints” as that church which has so cruelly
persecuted the followers of Christ. Babylon is also charged with
the sin of unlawful connection with “the kings of the earth.” It
was by departure from the Lord, and alliance with the heathen,

that the Jewish church became a harlot; and Rome, corrupting
herself in like manner by seeking the support of worldly powers,
receives a like condemnation.
Babylon is said to be “the mother of harlots.” By her daughters
must be symbolized churches that cling to her doctrines and
traditions, and follow her example of sacrificing the truth and [383]
the approval of God, in order to form an unlawful alliance with
the world. The message of Revelation 14, announcing the fall of
Babylon, must apply to religious bodies that were once pure and
have become corrupt. Since this message follows the warning
of the judgment, it must be given in the last days; therefore it
cannot refer to the Roman Church alone, for that church has
been in a fallen condition for many centuries. Furthermore, in the
eighteenth chapter of the Revelation, the people of God are called
upon to come out of Babylon. According to this scripture, many
of God’s people must still be in Babylon. And in what religious
bodies are the greater part of the followers of Christ now to be
found? Without doubt, in the various churches professing the
Protestant faith. At the time of their rise, these churches took
a noble stand for God and the truth, and His blessing was with
them. Even the unbelieving world was constrained to acknowledge
the beneficent results that followed an acceptance of the
principles of the gospel. In the words of the prophet to Israel,
“Thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for
it was perfect through My comeliness, which I had put upon
thee, saith the Lord God.”629 But they fell by the same desire
which was the curse and ruin of Israel,—the desire of imitating
the practices and courting the friendship of the ungodly. “Thou
didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because
of thy renown.”630
Many of the Protestant churches are following Rome’s example
of iniquitous connection with “the kings of the earth”—the
629 Eze. 16:14, 15.

398 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
state churches, by their relation to secular governments; and
other denominations, by seeking the favor of the world. And
the term “Babylon”—confusion—may be appropriately applied
to these bodies, all professing to derive their doctrines from the
Bible, yet divided into almost innumerable sects, with widely
conflicting creeds and theories.
Besides a sinful union with the world, the churches that sep-
[384] arated from Rome present other of her characteristics. A
Roman Catholic work argues that “if the Church of Rome were
ever guilty of idolatry in relation to the saints, her daughter, the
Church of England, stands guilty of the same, which has ten
churches dedicated to Mary for one dedicated to Christ.”631
And Dr. Hopkins, in “A Treatise on the Millennium,” declares:
“There is no reason to consider the antichristian spirit and
practices to be confined to that which is now called the Church of
Rome. The Protestant churches have much of antichrist in them,
and are far from being wholly reformed from … corruptions and
wickedness.”632
Concerning the separation of the Presbyterian Church from
Rome, Dr. Guthrie writes: “Three hundred years ago, our church,
with an open Bible on her banner, and this motto, ‘Search the
Scriptures,’ on her scroll, marched out from the gates of Rome.”
Then he asks the significant question, “Did they come clean out
of Babylon?”633
“The Church of England,” says Spurgeon, “seems to be eaten
through and through with sacramentarianism; but non-conformity
appears to be almost as badly riddled with philosophical
infidelity. Those of whom we thought better things are turning
aside one by one from the fundamentals of the faith. Through
and through, I believe, the very heart of England is honeycombed

with a damnable infidelity which dares still go into the pulpit and
call itself Christian.”
What was the origin of the great apostasy? How did the church
first depart from the simplicity of the gospel? By conforming to
the practices of paganism, to facilitate the acceptance of Christianity
by the heathen. The apostle Paul declared, even in his day,
“The mystery of iniquity doth already work.”634 During the lives
of the apostles the church remained comparatively pure. But
“toward the latter end of the second century most of the churches
assumed a new form; the first simplicity disappeared, and insensibly,
as the old disciples retired to their graves, their children, [385]
along with new converts, … came forward and new-modeled
the cause.”635 To secure converts, the exalted standard of the
Christian faith was lowered, and as the result “a pagan flood,
flowing into the church, carried with it its customs, practices, and
idols.”636 As the Christian religion secured the favor and support
of secular rulers, it was nominally accepted by multitudes; but
while in appearance Christians, many “remained in substance
pagans, especially worshiping in secret their idols.”637
Has not the same process been repeated in nearly every church
calling itself Protestant? As its founders, those who possessed the
true spirit of reform, pass away, their descendants come forward
and “new-model the cause.” While blindly clinging to the creed
of their fathers and refusing to accept any truth in advance of
what they saw, the children of the reformers depart widely from
their example of humility, self-denial, and renunciation of the
world. Thus “the first simplicity disappears.” A worldly flood,
flowing into the church, “carries with it its customs, practices,
and idols.”

400 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
Alas, to what a fearful extent is that friendship of the world
which is “enmity with God,” now cherished among the professed
followers of Christ! How widely have the popular churches
throughout Christendom departed from the Bible standard of humility,
self-denial, simplicity, and godliness! Said John Wesley,
in speaking of the right use of money: “Do not waste any part
of so precious a talent, merely in gratifying the desire of the
eye, by superfluous or expensive apparel, or by needless ornaments.
Waste no part of it in curiously adorning your houses; in
superfluous or expensive furniture; in costly pictures, painting,
gilding…. Lay out nothing to gratify the pride of life, to gain the
admiration or praise of men…. ‘So long as thou doest well unto
thyself, men will speak good of thee.’ So long as thou art ‘clothed
in purple and fine linen, and farest sumptuously every day,’ no
[386] doubt many will applaud thy elegance of taste, thy generosity
and hospitality. But do not buy their applause so dear. Rather be
content with the honor that cometh from God.”638 But in many
churches of our time, such teaching is disregarded.
A profession of religion has become popular with the world.
Rulers, politicians, lawyers, doctors, merchants, join the church
as a means of securing the respect and confidence of society, and
advancing their own worldly interests. Thus they seek to cover
all their unrighteous transactions under a profession of Christianity.
The various religious bodies, re-enforced by the wealth and
influence of these baptized worldlings, make a still higher bid for
popularity and patronage. Splendid churches, embellished in the
most extravagant manner, are erected on popular avenues. The
worshipers array themselves in costly and fashionable attire. A
high salary is paid for a talented minister to entertain and attract
the people. His sermons must not touch popular sins, but be
made smooth and pleasing for fashionable ears. Thus fashionable
sinners are enrolled on the church-records, and fashionable sins

21. A Warning Rejected. 401
are concealed under a pretense of godliness.
Commenting on the present attitude of professed Christians
toward the world, a leading secular journal says: “Insensibly
the church has yielded to the spirit of the age, and adapted its
forms of worship to modern wants.” “All things, indeed, that
help to make religion attractive, the church now employs as its
instruments.” And a writer in the New York Independent speaks
thus concerning Methodism as it is: “The line of separation
between the godly and the irreligious fades out into a kind of
penumbra, and zealous men on both sides are toiling to obliterate
all difference between their modes of action and enjoyment.”
“The popularity of religion tends vastly to increase the number
of those who would secure its benefits without squarely meeting
its duties.” [387]
Says Howard Crosby: “It is a matter of deep concern that we
find Christ’s church so little fulfilling the designs of its Lord. Just
as the ancient Jews let a familiar intercourse with the idolatrous
nations steal away their hearts from God, … so the church of
Jesus now is, by its false partnerships with an unbelieving world,
giving up the divine methods of its true life, and yielding itself
to the pernicious, though often plausible, habits of a Christless
society, using the arguments and reaching the conclusions which
are foreign to the revelation of God, and directly antagonistic to
all growth in grace.”639
In this tide of worldliness and pleasure-seeking, self-denial
and self-sacrifice for Christ’s sake are almost wholly lost. “Some
of the men and women now in active life in our churches were
educated, when children, to make sacrifices in order to be able
to give or do something for Christ.” But “if funds are wanted
now, … nobody must be called on to give. Oh, no! have a
fair, tableaux, mock trial, antiquarian supper, or something to
eat—anything to amuse the people.”

Governor Washburn, of Wisconsin, in his annual message,
Jan. 9, 1873, declared: “Some law seems to be required to break
up the schools where gamblers are made. These are everywhere.
Even the church (unwittingly, no doubt) is sometimes found
doing the work of the devil. Gift concerts, gift enterprises and
raffles, sometimes in aid of religious or charitable objects, but
often for less worthy purposes, lotteries, prize packages, etc.,
are all devices to obtain money without value received. Nothing
is so demoralizing or intoxicating, particularly to the young, as
the acquisition of money or property without labor. Respectable
people engaging in these chance enterprises, and easing their
consciences with the reflection that the money is to go to a good
object, it is not strange that the youth of the State should so often
fall into the habits which the excitement of games of hazard is
[388] almost certain to engender.”
The spirit of worldly conformity is invading the churches
throughout Christendom. Robert Atkins, in a sermon preached
in London, draws a dark picture of the spiritual declension that
prevails in England: “The truly righteous are diminished from
the earth, and no man layeth it to heart. The professors of religion
of the present day, in every church, are lovers of the world,
conformers to the world, lovers of creature comfort, and aspirers
after respectability. They are called to suffer with Christ, but
they shrink from even reproach…. apostasy, apostasy, apostasy,
is engraven on the very front of every church; and did they know
it, and did they feel it, there might be hope; but, alas! they
cry, ‘We are rich, and increased in goods, and stand in need of
nothing.’ ”640
The great sin charged against Babylon is, that she “made all
nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” This
cup of intoxication which she presents to the world, represents
the false doctrines that she has accepted as the result of her

unlawful connection with the great ones of the earth. Friendship
with the world corrupts her faith, and in her turn she exerts a
corrupting influence upon the world by teaching doctrines which
are opposed to the plainest statements of Holy Writ.
Rome withheld the Bible from the people, and required all
men to accept her teachings in its place. It was the work of the
Reformation to restore to men the word of God; but is it not too
true that in the churches of our time men are taught to rest their
faith upon their creed and the teachings of their church rather
than on the Scriptures? Said Charles Beecher, speaking of the
Protestant churches: “They shrink from any rude word against
creeds with the same sensitiveness with which those holy fathers
would have shrunk from a rude word against the rising veneration
of saints and martyrs which they were fostering…. The Protestant
evangelical denominations have so tied up one another’s hands,
and their own, that, between them all, a man cannot become a
preacher at all, anywhere, without accepting some book besides [389]
the Bible…. There is nothing imaginary in the statement that the
creed power is now beginning to prohibit the Bible as really as
Rome did, though in a subtler way.”641
When faithful teachers expound the word of God, there arise
men of learning, ministers professing to understand the Scriptures,
who denounce sound doctrine as heresy, and thus turn
away inquirers after truth. Were it not that the world is hopelessly
intoxicated with the wine of Babylon, multitudes would be
convicted and converted by the plain, cutting truths of the word
of God. But religious faith appears so confused and discordant,
that the people know not what to believe as truth. The sin of the
world’s impenitence lies at the door of the church.
The second angel’s message of Revelation 14 was first
preached in the summer of 1844, and it then had a more direct
application to the churches of the United States, where the
641 Sermon on “The Bible a Sufficient Creed,” delivered at Fort Wayne, Ind.,
Feb. 22, 1846.
404 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
warning of the judgment had been most widely proclaimed and
most generally rejected, and where the declension in the churches
had been most rapid. But the message of the second angel did
not reach its complete fulfilment in 1844. The churches then
experienced a moral fall, in consequence of their refusal of the
light of the advent message; but that fall was not complete. As
they have continued to reject the special truths for this time, they
have fallen lower and lower. Not yet, however, can it be said that
“Babylon is fallen, … because she made all nations drink of the
wine of the wrath of her fornication.” She has not yet made all
nations do this. The spirit of world-conforming and indifference
to the testing truths for our time, exists and has been gaining
ground in churches of the Protestant faith in all the countries
of Christendom; and these churches are included in the solemn
and terrible denunciation of the second angel. But the work of
apostasy has not yet reached its culmination.
The Bible declares that before the coming of the Lord, Satan
[390] will work “with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with
all deceivableness of unrighteousness;” and they that “received
not the love of the truth, that they might be saved,” will be left
to receive “strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”642
Not until this condition shall be reached, and the union of the
church with the world shall be fully accomplished throughout
Christendom, will the fall of Babylon be complete. The change
is a progressive one, and the perfect fulfilment of Rev. 14:8 is
yet future.
Notwithstanding the spiritual darkness and alienation from
God that exist in the churches which constitute Babylon, the
great body of Christ’s true followers are still to be found in their
communion. There are many of these who have never seen the
special truths for this time. Not a few are dissatisfied with their
present condition, and are longing for clearer light. They look

22. Prophecies Fulfilled. 405
in vain for the image of Christ in the churches with which they
are connected. As these bodies depart farther and farther from
the truth, and ally themselves more closely with the world, the
difference between the two classes will widen, and it will finally
result in separation. The time will come when those who love
God supremely can no longer remain in connection with such as
are “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form
of godliness, but denying the power thereof.”
Revelation 18 points to the time when, as the result of rejecting
the threefold warning of Rev. 14:6-12, the church will have fully
reached the condition foretold by the second angel, and the people
of God still in Babylon will be called upon to separate from
her communion. This message is the last that will ever be given
to the world; and it will accomplish its work. When those that
“believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness,”643
shall be left to receive strong delusion and to believe a lie, then
the light of truth will shine upon all whose hearts are open to
receive it, and all the children of the Lord that remain in Babylon
will heed the call, “Come out of her, My people.”644

A Great Religious Awakening.

27 Jan

A great religious awakening under the proclamation of Christ’s
soon coming, is foretold in the prophecy of the first angel’s message
of Revelation 14. An angel is seen flying “in the midst of
heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that
dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue,
and people.” “With a loud voice” he proclaims the message,
“Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 369
is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the
sea, and the fountains of waters.”590
The fact that an angel is said to be the herald of this warning,
is significant. By the purity, the glory, and the power of the heavenly
messenger, divine wisdom has been pleased to represent the
exalted character of the work to be accomplished by the message,
and the power and glory that were to attend it. And the angel’s
flight “in the midst of heaven,” the “loud voice” with which
the warning is uttered, and its promulgation to all “that dwell
on the earth,”—“to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and
people,”—give evidence of the rapidity and world-wide extent
of the movement.
The message itself sheds light as to the time when this movement
is to take place. It is declared to be a part of the “everlasting
gospel;” and it announces the opening of the judgment. The [356]
message of salvation has been preached in all ages; but this
message is a part of the gospel which could be proclaimed only
in the last days, for only then would it be true that the hour
of judgment had come. The prophecies present a succession
of events leading down to the opening of the judgment. This
is especially true of the book of Daniel. But that part of his
prophecy which related to the last days, Daniel was bidden to
close up and seal “to the time of the end.” Not till we reach this
time could a message concerning the judgment be proclaimed,
based on a fulfilment of these prophecies. But at the time of the
end, says the prophet, “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge
shall be increased.”591
The apostle Paul warned the church not to look for the coming
of Christ in his day. “That day shall not come,” he says,
“except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be
revealed.”592 Not till after the great apostasy, and the long period

of the reign of the “man of sin,” can we look for the advent of
our Lord. The “man of sin,” which is also styled the “mystery of
iniquity,” the “son of perdition,” and “that wicked,” represents
the papacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its
supremacy for 1260 years. This period ended in 1798. The
coming of Christ could not take place before that time. Paul
covers with his caution the whole of the Christian dispensation
down to the year 1798. It is this side of that time that the message
of Christ’s second coming is to be proclaimed.
No such message has ever been given in past ages. Paul, as we
have seen, did not preach it; he pointed his brethren into the then
far-distant future for the coming of the Lord. The Reformers did
not proclaim it. Martin Luther placed the judgment about three
hundred years in the future from his day. But since 1798 the
book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the prophecies
has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of
[357] the judgment near.
Like the great Reformation of the sixteenth century, the Advent
Movement appeared in different countries of Christendom
at the same time. In both Europe and America, men of faith and
prayer were led to the study of the prophecies, and tracing down
the inspired record, they saw convincing evidence that the end
of all things was at hand. In different lands there were isolated
bodies of Christians who, solely by the study of the Scriptures,
arrived at the belief that the Saviour’s advent was near.
In 1821, three years after Miller had arrived at his exposition
of the prophecies pointing to the time of the judgment, Dr.
Joseph Wolff, “the missionary to the world,” began to proclaim
the Lord’s soon coming. Wolff was born in Germany, of Hebrew
parentage, his father being a Jewish rabbi. While very young, he
was convinced of the truth of the Christian religion. Of an active,
inquiring mind, he had been an eager listener to the conversations
that took place in his father’s house, as devout Hebrews daily
assembled to recount the hopes and anticipations of their people,

the glory of the coming Messiah, and the restoration of Israel.
One day hearing Jesus of Nazareth mentioned, the boy inquired
who He was. “A Jew of the greatest talent,” was the answer; “but
as He pretended to be the Messiah, the Jewish tribunal sentenced
Him to death.” “Why,” rejoined the questioner, “is Jerusalem destroyed,
and why are we in captivity?” “Alas, alas!” answered his
father, “because the Jews murdered the prophets.” The thought
was at once suggested to the child, “Perhaps Jesus was also a
prophet, and the Jews killed Him when He was innocent.”593 So
strong was this feeling, that though forbidden to enter a Christian
church, he would often linger outside to listen to the preaching.
When only seven years old, he was boasting to an aged Christian
neighbor of the future triumph of Israel at the advent of the
Messiah, when the old man said kindly, “Dear boy, I will tell you
who the real Messiah was: He was Jesus of Nazareth, … whom [358]
your ancestors have crucified, as they did the prophets of old. Go
home and read the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah, and you will be
convinced that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”594 Conviction at
once fastened upon him. He went home and read the scripture,
wondering to see how perfectly it had been fulfilled in Jesus of
Nazareth. Were the words of the Christian true? The boy asked
of his father an explanation of the prophecy, but was met with a
silence so stern that he never again dared to refer to the subject.
This, however, only increased his desire to know more of the
Christian religion.
The knowledge he sought was studiously kept from him in
his Jewish home; but when only eleven years old, he left his
father’s house, and went out into the world to gain for himself an
education, to choose his religion and his life-work. He found a
home for a time with kinsmen, but was soon driven from them
as an apostate, and alone and penniless he had to make his own
way among strangers. He went from place to place, studying dili-

gently, and maintaining himself by teaching Hebrew. Through
the influence of a Catholic instructor, he was led to accept the
Romish faith, and formed the purpose of becoming a missionary
to his own people. With this object he went, a few years later,
to pursue his studies in the College of the Propaganda at Rome.
Here his habit of independent thought and candid speech brought
upon him the imputation of heresy. He openly attacked the abuses
of the church, and urged the necessity of reform. Though at first
treated with special favor by the papal dignitaries, he was after a
time removed from Rome. Under the surveillance of the church
he went from place to place, until it became evident that he could
never be brought to submit to the bondage of Romanism. He was
declared to be incorrigible, and was left at liberty to go where
he pleased. He now made his way to England, and professing
the Protestant faith, united with the English Church. After two
[359] years’ study he set out, in 1821, upon his mission. While Wolff
accepted the great truth of Christ’s first advent as “a man of
sorrows, and acquainted with grief,” he saw that the prophecies
bring to view with equal clearness His second advent with power
and glory. And while he sought to lead his people to Jesus of
Nazareth as the Promised One, and to point them to His first
coming in humiliation as a sacrifice for the sins of men, he taught
them also of His second coming as a king and deliverer.
“Jesus of Nazareth, the true Messiah,” he said, “whose hands
and feet were pierced, who was brought like a lamb to the slaughter,
who was the Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, who
after the scepter was taken from Judah, and the legislative power
from between his feet, came the first time; shall come the
second time in the clouds of heaven, and with the trump of the
Archangel,”595 “and shall stand upon the Mount of Olives; and
that dominion, once consigned to Adam over the creation, and
forfeited by him (Gen. 1:26; 3:17), shall be given to Jesus. He

shall be king over all the earth. The groanings and lamentations
of the creation shall cease, but songs of praises and thanksgivings
shall be heard…. When Jesus comes in the glory of His Father,
with the holy angels, … the dead believers shall rise first. 1 Thess.
4:16; 1 Cor. 15: 23. This is what we Christians call the first
resurrection. Then the animal kingdom shall change its nature
(Isa. 11:6-9), and be subdued unto Jesus. Psalm 8. Universal
peace shall prevail.”596 “The Lord again shall look down upon
the earth, and say, ‘Behold, it is very good.’ ”597
Wolff believed the coming of the Lord to be at hand, his
interpretation of the prophetic periods placing the great consummation
within a very few years of the time pointed out by Miller.
To those who urged from the scripture, “Of that day and hour
knoweth no man,” that men are to know nothing concerning the
nearness of the advent, Wolff replied: “Did our Lord say that that
day and hour should never be known? Did He not give us signs
of the times, in order that we may know at least the approach [360]
of His coming, as one knows the approach of the summer by
the fig-tree putting forth its leaves? Matt. 24:32. Are we never
to know that period, whilst He Himself exhorteth us not only to
read Daniel the prophet, but to understand it? and in that very
Daniel, where it is said that the words were shut up to the time
of the end (which was the case in his time), and that ‘many shall
run to and fro’ (a Hebrew expression for observing and thinking
upon the time), ‘and knowledge’ (regarding that time) ‘shall be
increased.’ Dan. 12:4. Besides this, our Lord does not intend to
say by this, that the approach of the time shall not be known,
but that the exact ‘day and hour knoweth no man.’ Enough, He
does say, shall be known by the signs of the times, to induce us
to prepare for His coming, as Noah prepared the ark.”598

preting, the Scriptures, Wolff wrote: “The greater part of the
Christian church have swerved from the plain sense of Scripture,
and have turned to the phantomizing system of the Buddhists,
who believe that the future happiness of mankind will consist
in moving about in the air, and suppose that when they are
reading Jews, they must understand Gentiles; and when they
read Jerusalem, they must understand the church; and if it is
said earth, it means sky; and for the coming of the Lord they
must understand the progress of the missionary societies; and
going up to the mountain of the Lord’s house, signifies a grand
class-meeting of Methodists.”599
During the twenty-four years from 1821 to 1845, Wolff traveled
extensively: in Africa, visiting Egypt and Abyssinia; in
Asia, traversing Palestine, Syria, Persia, Bokhara, and India. He
also visited the United States, on the journey thither preaching
on the island of St. Helena. He arrived in New York in August,
1837; and after speaking in that city, he preached in Philadelphia
and Baltimore, and finally proceeded to Washington. Here, he
says, “on a motion brought forward by the ex-president, John
[361] Quincy Adams, in one of the houses of Congress, the House
unanimously granted to me the use of the Congress Hall for
a lecture, which I delivered on a Saturday, honored with the
presence of all the members of Congress, and also of the bishop
of Virginia, and of the clergy and citizens of Washington. The
same honor was granted to me by the members of the government
of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in whose presence I delivered
lectures on my researches in Asia, and also on the personal reign
of Jesus Christ.”600
Dr. Wolff traveled in the most barbarous countries, without
the protection of any European authority, enduring many hardships,
and surrounded with countless perils. He was bastinadoed
and starved, sold as a slave, and three times condemned to death.

He was beset by robbers, and sometimes nearly perished from
thirst. Once he was stripped of all that he possessed, and left to
travel hundreds of miles on foot through the mountains, the snow
beating in his face, and his naked feet benumbed by contact with
the frozen ground.
When warned against going unarmed among savage and hostile
tribes, he declared himself “provided with arms,”—“prayer,
zeal for Christ, and confidence in His help.” “I am also,” he said,
“provided with the love of God and my neighbor in my heart, and
the Bible is in my hand.”601 The Bible in Hebrew and English he
carried with him wherever he went. Of one of his later journeys
he says, “I … kept the Bible open in my hand. I felt my power
was in the book, and that its might would sustain me.”602
Thus he persevered in his labors until the message of the
judgment had been carried to a large part of the habitable globe.
Among Jews, Turks, Parsees, Hindoos, and many other nationalities
and races, he distributed the word of God in these various
tongues, and everywhere heralded the approaching reign of the
Messiah.
In his travels in Bokhara he found the doctrine of the Lord’s
soon coming held by a remote and isolated people. The Arabs [362]
of Yemen, he says, “are in possession of a book called ‘Seera,’
which gives notice of the second coming of Christ and His reign
in glory; and they expect great events to take place in the year
1840.”603 “In Yemen … I spent six days with the children of
Rechab. They drink no wine, plant no vineyard, sow no seed,
and live in tents, and remember good old Jonadab, the son of
Rechab; and I found in their company children of Israel, of the
tribe of Dan, … who expect, with the children of Rechab, the
speedy arrival of the Messiah in the clouds of heaven.”604

376 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
A similar belief was found by another missionary to exist in
Tartary. A Tartar priest put the question to the missionary, as to
when Christ would come the second time. When the missionary
answered that he knew nothing about it, the priest seemed greatly
surprised at such ignorance in one who professed to be a Bible
teacher, and stated his own belief, founded on prophecy, that
Christ would come about 1844.
As early as 1826 the advent message began to be preached in
England. The movement here did not take so definite a form as in
America; the exact time of the advent was not so generally taught,
but the great truth of Christ’s soon coming in power and glory was
extensively proclaimed. And this not among the dissenters and
non-conformists only. Mourant Brock, an English writer, states
that about seven hundred ministers of the Church of England
were engaged in preaching this “gospel of the kingdom.” The
message pointing to 1844 as the time of the Lord’s coming was
also given in Great Britain. Advent publications from the United
States were widely circulated. Books and journals were republished
in England. And in 1842, Robert Winter, an Englishman
by birth, who had received the advent faith in America, returned
to his native country to herald the coming of the Lord. Many
united with him in the work, and the message of the judgment
[363] was proclaimed in various parts of England.
In South America, in the midst of barbarism and priestcraft,
Lacunza, a Spaniard and a Jesuit, found his way to the Scriptures,
and thus received the truth of Christ’s speedy return. Impelled to
give the warning, yet desiring to escape the censures of Rome,
he published his views under the assumed name of “Rabbi Ben-
Israel,” representing himself as a converted Jew. Lacunza lived
in the eighteenth century, but it was about 1825 that his book,
having found its way to London, was translated into the English
language. Its publication served to deepen the interest already
awakening in England in the subject of the second advent.
In Germany the doctrine had been taught in the eighteenth
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 377
century by Bengel, a minister in the Lutheran Church, and a
celebrated biblical scholar and critic. Upon completing his education,
Bengel had “devoted himself to the study of theology,
to which the grave and religious tone of his mind, deepened
and strengthened by his early training and discipline, naturally
inclined him. Like other young men of thoughtful character,
before and since, he had to struggle with doubts and difficulties
of a religious nature, and he alludes, with much feeling, to the
‘many arrows which pierced his poor heart, and made his youth
hard to bear.’ ”605 Becoming a member of the consistory of
Würtemberg, he advocated the cause of religious liberty. “While
maintaining the rights and privileges of the church, he was an
advocate for all reasonable freedom being accorded to those who
felt themselves bound, on grounds of conscience, to withdraw
from her communion.”606 The good effects of this policy are still
felt in his native province.
It was while preparing a sermon from Revelation 21 for “Advent
Sunday” that the light of Christ’s second coming broke in
upon Bengel’s mind. The prophecies of the Revelation unfolded
to his understanding as never before. Overwhelmed with a sense
of the stupendous importance and surpassing glory of the scenes
presented by the prophet, he was forced to turn for a time from
the contemplation of the subject. In the pulpit it again presented [364]
itself to him with all its vividness and power. From that time he
devoted himself to the study of the prophecies, especially those
of the Apocalypse, and soon arrived at the belief that they pointed
to the coming of Christ as near. The date which he fixed upon as
the time of the second advent was within a very few years of that
afterward held by Miller.
Bengel’s writings have been spread throughout Christendom.
His views of prophecy were quite generally received in his own
state of Würtemberg, and to some extent in other parts of Ger-
605 Encyclopædia Britannica, art. Bengel (ninth edition).

many. The movement continued after his death, and the advent
message was heard in Germany at the same time that it was
attracting attention in other lands. At an early date some of the
believers went to Russia, and there formed colonies, and the faith
of Christ’s soon coming is still held by the German churches of
that country.
The light shone also in France and Switzerland. At Geneva,
where Farel and Calvin had spread the truths of the Reformation,
Gaussen preached the message of the second advent. While a student
at school, Gaussen had encountered that spirit of rationalism
which pervaded all Europe during the latter part of the eighteenth
and the opening of the nineteenth century; and when he entered
the ministry he was not only ignorant of true faith, but inclined to
skepticism. In his youth he had become interested in the study of
prophecy. After reading Rollin’s “Ancient History,” his attention
was called to the second chapter of Daniel, and he was struck
with the wonderful exactness with which the prophecy had been
fulfilled, as seen in the historian’s record. Here was a testimony
to the inspiration of the Scriptures, which served as an anchor
to him amid the perils of later years. He could not rest satisfied
with the teachings of rationalism, and in studying the Bible and
searching for clearer light he was, after a time, led to a positive
faith.
As he pursued his investigation of the prophecies, he arrived
at the belief that the coming of the Lord was at hand. Impressed
[365] with the solemnity and importance of this great truth, he desired
to bring it before the people; but the popular belief that the
prophecies of Daniel are mysteries and cannot be understood,
was a serious obstacle in his way. He finally determined—as
Farel had done before him in evangelizing Geneva—to begin
with the children, through whom he hoped to interest the parents.
“I desire this to be understood,” he afterward said, speaking
of his object in this undertaking, “it is not because of its small
importance, but on the contrary because of its great value, that I
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 379
wished to present it in this familiar form, and that I addressed it
to the children. I desired to be heard, and I feared that I would not
be if I addressed myself to the grown people first.” “I determined
therefore to go to the youngest. I gather an audience of children;
if the group enlarges, if it is seen that they listen, are pleased,
interested, that they understand and explain the subject, I am sure
to have a second circle soon, and in their turn, grown people will
see that it is worth their while to sit down and study. When this
is done, the cause is gained.”607
The effort was successful. As he addressed the children, older
persons came to listen. The galleries of his church were filled
with attentive hearers. Among them were men of rank and
learning, and strangers and foreigners visiting Geneva; and thus
the message was carried to other parts.
Encouraged by this success, Gaussen published his lessons,
with the hope of promoting the study of the prophetic books in
the churches of the French-speaking people. “To publish instruction
given to the children,” says Gaussen, “is to say to adults,
who too often neglect such books under the false pretense that
they are obscure, ‘How can they be obscure, since your children
understand them?’ ” “I had a great desire,” he adds, “to render a
knowledge of the prophecies popular in our flocks, if possible.”
“There is no study, indeed, which it seems to me answers the
needs of the time better.” “It is by this that we are to prepare for
the tribulation near at hand, and watch and wait for Jesus Christ.” [366]
Though one of the most distinguished and beloved of preachers
in the French language, Gaussen was after a time suspended
from the ministry, his principal offense being that instead of the
church’s catechism, a tame and rationalistic manual, almost destitute
of positive faith, he had used the Bible in giving instruction to
the youth. He afterward became teacher in a theological school,
while on Sunday he continued his work as catechist, addressing
607 Gaussen, L., “Daniel the Prophet,” Vol. II, Preface.
380 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
the children, and instructing them in the Scriptures. His works
on prophecy also excited much interest. From the professor’s
chair, through the press, and in his favorite occupation as teacher
of children, he continued for many years to exert an extensive
influence, and was instrumental in calling the attention of many
to the study of the prophecies which showed that the coming of
the Lord was near.
In Scandinavia also the advent message was proclaimed, and
a wide-spread interest was kindled. Many were roused from
their careless security, to confess and forsake their sins, and
seek pardon in the name of Christ. But the clergy of the state
church opposed the movement, and through their influence some
who preached the message were thrown into prison. In many
places where the preachers of the Lord’s soon coming were thus
silenced, God was pleased to send the message, in a miraculous
manner, through little children. As they were under age, the law
of the state could not restrain them, and they were permitted to
speak unmolested.
The movement was chiefly among the lower class, and it was
in the humble dwellings of the laborers that the people assembled
to hear the warning. The child-preachers themselves were
mostly poor cottagers. Some of them were not more than six or
eight years of age; and while their lives testified that they loved
the Saviour, and were trying to live in obedience to God’s holy
requirements, they ordinarily manifested only the intelligence
and ability usually seen in children of that age. When standing
before the people, however, it was evident that they were moved
[367] by an influence beyond their own natural gifts. Tone and manner
changed, and with solemn power they gave the warning of the
judgment, employing the very words of Scripture, “Fear God,
and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come.”
They reproved the sins of the people, not only condemning immorality
and vice, but rebuking worldliness and backsliding, and
warning their hearers to make haste to flee from the wrath to

come.
The people heard with trembling. The convicting Spirit of
God spoke to their hearts. Many were led to search the Scriptures
with new and deeper interest, the intemperate and immoral
were reformed, others abandoned their dishonest practices, and a
work was done so marked that even ministers of the state church
were forced to acknowledge that the hand of God was in the
movement.
It was God’s will that the tidings of the Saviour’s coming
should be given in the Scandinavian countries; and when the
voices of His servants were silenced, He put His Spirit upon the
children, that the work might be accomplished. When Jesus drew
near to Jerusalem attended by the rejoicing multitudes that, with
shouts of triumph and the waving of palm branches, heralded
Him as the Son of David, the jealous Pharisees called upon
Him to silence them; but Jesus answered that all this was in
fulfilment of prophecy, and if these should hold their peace, the
very stones would cry out. The people, intimidated by the threats
of the priests and rulers, ceased their joyful proclamation as they
entered the gates of Jerusalem; but the children in the temple
courts afterward took up the refrain, and waving their branches
of palm, they cried, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”608 When the
Pharisees, sorely displeased, said unto Him, “Hearest Thou what
these say?” Jesus answered, “Yea; have ye never read, Out of the
mouth of babes and sucklings Thou hast perfected praise?” As
God wrought through children at the time of Christ’s first advent,
so He wrought through them in giving the message of His second [368]
advent. God’s word must be fulfilled, that the proclamation of
the Saviour’s coming should be given to all peoples, tongues, and
nations.
To William Miller and his co-laborers it was given to preach
the warning in America. This country became the center of the
608 Matt. 21:8-16.
382 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
great Advent Movement. It was here that the prophecy of the
first angel’s message had its most direct fulfilment. The writings
of Miller and his associates were carried to distant lands. Wherever
missionaries had penetrated in all the world, were sent the
glad tidings of Christ’s speedy return. Far and wide spread the
message of the everlasting gospel, “Fear God, and give glory to
Him; for the hour of His judgment is come.”
The testimony of the prophecies which seemed to point to the
coming of Christ in the spring of 1844, took deep hold of the
minds of the people. As the message went from State to State,
there was everywhere awakened wide-spread interest. Many
were convinced that the arguments from the prophetic periods
were correct, and sacrificing their pride of opinion, they joyfully
received the truth. Some ministers laid aside their sectarian views
and feelings, left their salaries and their churches, and united in
proclaiming the coming of Jesus. There were comparatively few
ministers, however, who would accept this message; therefore
it was largely committed to humble laymen. Farmers left their
fields, mechanics their tools, traders their merchandise, professional
men their positions; and yet the number of workers was
small in comparison with the work to be accomplished. The
condition of an ungodly church and a world lying in wickedness,
burdened the souls of the true watchmen, and they willingly
endured toil, privation, and suffering, that they might call men
to repentance unto salvation. Though opposed by Satan, the
work went steadily forward, and the advent truth was accepted
[369] by many thousands.
Everywhere the searching testimony was heard, warning sinners,
both worldlings and church-members, to flee from the
wrath to come. Like John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ,
the preachers laid the axe at the root of the tree, and urged all
to bring forth fruit meet for repentance. Their stirring appeals
were in marked contrast to the assurances of peace and safety
that were heard from popular pulpits; and wherever the message

was given, it moved the people. The simple, direct testimony of
the Scriptures, set home by the power of the Holy Spirit, brought
a weight of conviction which few were able wholly to resist.
Professors of religion were roused from their false security. They
saw their backslidings, their worldliness and unbelief, their pride
and selfishness. Many sought the Lord with repentance and
humiliation. The affections that had so long clung to earthly
things they now fixed upon heaven. The Spirit of God rested
upon them, and with hearts softened and subdued they joined to
sound the cry, “Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of
His judgment is come.”
Sinners inquired with weeping, “What must I do to be saved?”
Those whose lives had been marked with dishonesty were anxious
to make restitution. All who found peace in Christ longed to
see others share the blessing. The hearts of parents were turned
to their children, and the hearts of children to their parents. The
barriers of pride and reserve were swept away. Heartfelt confessions
were made, and the members of the household labored for
the salvation of those who were nearest and dearest. Often was
heard the sound of earnest intercession. Everywhere were souls
in deep anguish, pleading with God. Many wrestled all night in
prayer for the assurance that their own sins were pardoned, or for
the conversion of their relatives or neighbors.
All classes flocked to the Adventist meetings. Rich and poor,
high and low, were, from various causes, anxious to hear for
themselves the doctrine of the second advent. The Lord held the
spirit of opposition in check while His servants explained the [370]
reasons of their faith. Sometimes the instrument was feeble; but
the Spirit of God gave power to His truth. The presence of holy
angels was felt in these assemblies, and many were daily added
to the believers. As the evidences of Christ’s soon coming were
repeated, vast crowds listened in breathless silence to the solemn
words. Heaven and earth seemed to approach each other. The
power of God was felt upon old and young and middle-aged.
384 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
Men sought their homes with praises upon their lips, and the glad
sound rang out upon the still night air. None who attended those
meetings can ever forget those scenes of deepest interest.
The proclamation of a definite time for Christ’s coming called
forth great opposition from many of all classes, from the minister
in the pulpit down to the most reckless, Heaven-daring sinner.
The words of prophecy were fulfilled: “There shall come in
the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying,
‘Where is the promise of His coming?’ for since the fathers fell
asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the
creation.”609 Many who professed to love the Saviour, declared
that they had no opposition to the doctrine of the second advent;
they merely objected to the definite time. But God’s all-seeing
eye read their hearts. They did not wish to hear of Christ’s
coming to judge the world in righteousness. They had been
unfaithful servants, their works would not bear the inspection
of the heart-searching God, and they feared to meet their Lord.
Like the Jews at the time of Christ’s first advent, they were not
prepared to welcome Jesus. They not only refused to listen to the
plain arguments from the Bible, but ridiculed those who were
looking for the Lord. Satan and his angels exulted, and flung the
taunt in the face of Christ and holy angels, that His professed
people had so little love for Him that they did not desire His
appearing.
“No man knoweth the day nor the hour,” was the argument
most often brought forward by rejecters of the advent faith. The
[371] scripture is, “Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not
the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”610 A clear and harmonious
explanation of this text was given by those who were
looking for the Lord, and the wrong use made of it by their
opponents was clearly shown. The words were spoken by Christ
in that memorable conversation with His disciples upon Olivet,
609 2 Peter 3:3, 4.
610 Matt. 24:36, 3, 33, 42-51.
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 385
after He had for the last time departed from the temple. The
disciples had asked the question, “What shall be the sign of Thy
coming, and of the end of the world?” Jesus gave them signs,
and said, “When ye shall see all these things, know that it is
near, even at the doors.”611 One saying of the Saviour must not
be made to destroy another. Though no man knoweth the day
nor the hour of His coming, we are instructed and required to
know when it is near. We are further taught that to disregard His
warning, and refuse or neglect to know when His advent is near,
will be as fatal for us as it was for those who lived in the days of
Noah not to know when the flood was coming. And the parable
in the same chapter, contrasting the faithful and the unfaithful
servant, and giving the doom of him who said in his heart,
“My Lord delayeth His coming,” shows in what light Christ will
regard and reward those whom He finds watching, and teaching
His coming, and those denying it. “Watch therefore,” He says;
“blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when He cometh shall
find so doing.”612 “If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come
on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come
upon thee.”613
Paul speaks of a class to whom the Lord’s appearing will come
unawares. “The day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the
night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden
destruction cometh upon them, … and they shall not escape.” But
He adds, to those who have given heed to the Saviour’s warning,
“Ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake
you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of
the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.”614 [372]
Thus it was shown that Scripture gives no warrant for men to
remain in ignorance concerning the nearness of Christ’s coming.

386 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
But those who desired only an excuse to reject the truth closed
their ears to this explanation; and the words, “No man knoweth
the day nor the hour,” continued to be echoed by the bold scoffer,
and even by the professed minister of Christ. As the people
were roused, and began to inquire the way of salvation, religious
teachers stepped in between them and the truth, seeking to quiet
their fears by falsely interpreting the word of God. Unfaithful
watchmen united in the work of the great deceiver, crying, Peace,
peace, when God had not spoken peace. Like the Pharisees in
Christ’s day, many refused to enter the kingdom of heaven themselves,
and those who were entering in, they hindered. The blood
of these souls will be required at their hand.
The most humble and devoted in the churches were usually
the first to receive the message. Those who studied the Bible
for themselves could not but see the unscriptural character of the
popular views of prophecy; and wherever the people were not
controlled by the influence of the clergy, wherever they would
search the word of God for themselves, the advent doctrine
needed only to be compared with the Scriptures to establish its
divine authority.
Many were persecuted by their unbelieving brethren. In order
to retain their position in the church, some consented to be silent
in regard to their hope; but others felt that loyalty to God forbade
them thus to hide the truths which He had committed to their
trust. Not a few were cut off from the fellowship of the church
for no other reason than expressing their belief in the coming
of Christ. Very precious to those who bore this trial of their
faith were the words of the prophet, “Your brethren that hated
you, that cast you out for My name’s sake, said, Let the Lord
be glorified: but He shall appear to your joy, and they shall be
[373] ashamed.”615
Angels of God were watching with the deepest interest the
615 Isa. 66:5.
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 387
result of the warning. When there was a general rejection of the
message by the churches, angels turned away in sadness. But
there were many who had not yet been tested in regard to the
advent truth. Many were misled by husbands, wives, parents, or
children, and were made to believe it a sin even to listen to such
heresies as were taught by the Adventists. Angels were bidden
to keep faithful watch over these souls; for another light was yet
to shine upon them from the throne of God.
With unspeakable desire those who had received the message
watched for the coming of their Saviour. The time when they
expected to meet Him was at hand. They approached this hour
with a calm solemnity. They rested in sweet communion with
God, an earnest of the peace that was to be theirs in the bright
hereafter. None who experienced this hope and trust can forget
those precious hours of waiting. For some weeks preceding the
time, worldly business was for the most part laid aside. The
sincere believers carefully examined every thought and emotion
of their hearts as if upon their death-beds and in a few hours to
close their eyes upon earthly scenes. There was no making of
“ascension robes;”616 but all felt the need of internal evidence
that they were prepared to meet the Saviour; their white robes
were purity of soul,—characters cleansed from sin by the atoning
blood of Christ. Would that there was still with the professed people
of God the same spirit of heart-searching, the same earnest,
determined faith. Had they continued thus to humble themselves
before the Lord, and press their petitions at the mercy-seat, they
would be in possession of a far richer experience than they now
have. There is too little prayer, too little real conviction of sin,
and the lack of living faith leaves many destitute of the grace so
richly provided by our Redeemer.
God designed to prove His people. His hand covered a mistake
in the reckoning of the prophetic periods. Adventists did not [374]
616 See Appendix.
388 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
discover the error, nor was it discovered by the most learned of
their opponents. The latter said: “Your reckoning of the prophetic
periods is correct. Some great event is about to take place; but it
is not what Mr. Miller predicts; it is the conversion of the world,
and not the second advent of Christ.”617
The time of expectation passed, and Christ did not appear for
the deliverance of His people. Those who with sincere faith and
love had looked for their Saviour, experienced a bitter disappointment.
Yet the purposes of God were being accomplished:
He was testing the hearts of those who professed to be waiting
for His appearing. There were among them many who had been
actuated by no higher motive than fear. Their profession of faith
had not affected their hearts or their lives. When the expected
event failed to take place, these persons declared that they were
not disappointed; they had never believed that Christ would
come. They were among the first to ridicule the sorrow of the
true believers.
But Jesus and all the heavenly host looked with love and sympathy
upon the tried and faithful yet disappointed ones. Could
the veil separating the visible from the invisible world have been
swept back, angels would have been seen drawing near to these
steadfast souls, and shielding them from the shafts of Satan.

The Time of Trouble

23 Jan

There is a time of trouble that is soon to break upon this world, and the main force of it will be directed at God’s true commandment keeping people. This time of trouble was prophesied to happen by Daniel:

Daniel 12:1 …’And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.’

The “Great Prince” spoken here is none other than Jesus Christ Himself. He is the one who “standeth” 4 angels (intercedes) for the children of God. And while Christ is interceding on our behalf in the Heavenly courts, the “winds of strife” are being held in check (Revelation 7:1) until judgment comes to an end and Jesus has sealed His servants with the seal of God.

The scene of Christ Jesus “standing up” is a scene of hope, because the reason He is standing up is to return to this world to deliver His people, as the above Bible verse in Daniel confirms. But before Christ returns there will be a time of trouble that this world has never seen before.

When judgment comes to an end and the cases for all have been decided for saved or lost, the four angels who are holding the four winds will be told to loose them and then this world will be plunged into great unparalleled ruin, such as we’ve never seen before. Today, God’s Spirit is still striving with mankind, to save as many people as the Lord can, and the full power of Satan is being kept in check. But once God’s Spirit is removed from the earth, the powers of darkness will unleash it’s complete fury upon mankind.

There are examples in the Old Testament of single angels causing untold destruction. One example being when King David numbered the people against God’s will, and a single angle brought terrible destruction to the people (2 Samuel 24:15-16). Now just imagine what is going to happen when Satan and his MILLIONS of powerful angels have full control of the earth! You can begin to understand why this time of trouble is going to be so much worse than anything this world has seen.

But who is Satan going to point his fury at?

Now this is the important point to consider. Where, and more specifically who exactly is this “fury” going to be pointed at? Take a look at the following Bible verse, and you will see the answer:

Revelation 12:17 …’And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.’

So who is Satan “angry” with? God’s people! The woman here is a symbol of the true church, and the “remnant” are the true people of God during the end times who keep His commandments and have the testimony (spirit of prophecy – Rev. 19:10) and keep the faith of Jesus Christ (Rev. 14:12). And it is these people who Satan will give special attention to during this time of trouble. Satan will convince the world that it is God’s commandment keeping people who have brought destruction upon the world and we will become targets for great persecution (Rev. 13:15).

Daniel 10:14 …’Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days.’

In light of this, we need to be preparing NOW. We need to have a daily experience with Christ Jesus like we’ve never had before. Because if we do not cling to Christ Jesus now in this relative time of “calm” and seek to walk side by side with our Lord and Saviour, then when the time of trouble hits and we find ourselves under great persecution, we will find it difficult to stay true to our faith.

And now I hear many about to say …”Oh but we need not worry about this because the church will be “raptured” away before the tribulation begins.”

Well, if you believe this false teaching like so many other professing Christians do, then let me direct you to the clearest Bible verse which proves the rapture theory to be false.

Matthew 13:24-30 …’Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.’

Matthew 13:38-40 …’The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.’

Now those who hold to this “rapture” theory believe that the church will be taken away to heaven and then the rest of the inhabitants of the world will CONTINUE TO LIVE ON EARTH through the great tribulation. So according to the “rapture” supporters, there will be a separation BEFORE the end of the world. And yet the Bible verses above clearly state that there will be no separation, and that the separation will take place ONLY at the END OF THE WORLD, which is when Jesus returns at the ONE AND ONLY physical, literal, loud, fiery second coming (Matt. 24:27; 1 Thess. 4:16-17; Rev. 1:7; 2 Peter 3:10).

And did you notice another truth? It is the wicked who are “gathered” first, NOT the church.

This secret rapture teaching is nothing more than one of Satan’s invented teachings to make people think they need not be prepared for any tribulation. And what will happen to all those poor souls who thought they would be raptured away when they find themselves in the thick of great persecution? They will find it is too late to prepare and will end up falling away and be forever lost!

Friends, it’s time to get ready now. There is not a moment to lose. We must pray like we’ve never prayed before. We must study God’s Word like never before. We must repent and turn away from our sins. We must seek Christ daily and walk with Him daily. We need to have an experience like Jacob, when he wrestled with the Angel of the Lord, not willing to let Him go until he received the blessing and assurance from the Lord. Jacob overcame his sin, which is why his name was changed to Israel. We need to do the same. THEN the following promise of Christ will apply to us during the great time of trouble …

“and at that time thy people shall be delivered.” (Daniel 12:1)

“These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:14)

The time of trouble is soon to break upon this world. Please heed the warning and get ready now, before it is too late. And when I say “get ready”. I don’t mean for you to stock pile food and build yourself a hideaway bunker. I mean to get ready spiritually. Preparing your heart and mind by submitting fully to Christ Jesus and His Word. Then you will have the great resource of Christ’s power and protection, which is all we need in the last days. May God be with you and protect you in the final hours!

The Search for the True Church

7 Dec
The Search
Is there a true church in the world today? And if so, how can it be identified? Of all the religious questions facing the modern truth-seeker, this is certainly the most demanding and also the most frustrating. Conflicting voices from every quarter declare that they have the answer. Denominations, sects, and cults make strident claims based upon emotional interpretations of isolated Bible texts.
The average Christian today has been so totally turned off by these exaggerated boasts that many have even discounted the possibility that any “true church” could really exist. Others have questioned the criteria by which any church could be tested and rated as “truer” than another.
It is very important to recognize that no church can be proven superior because its members are without sin. People are people, and all are subject to the same frailties of human nature. Yet, it is also true that every Christian has access to the same mighty power of God for overcoming those frailties. Therefore, any church today will necessarily be made up of individuals who are at varying levels of personal sanctification. The wheat and tares will still be mingled together, and no church will be made up entirely of perfect people.
But the question remains: Is there some valid way to identify the church which is closest to the biblical standards of truth? Some feel that the distinctive name of the organization will set it apart as the right one. Obviously, this could be no accurate test, because the choice of a name would reveal nothing about the spiritual nature of that church. Such shallow claims only serve to discourage intelligent searchers after the truth.
It must be apparent to all that if God has a special church in the world today, He will reveal it clearly and explicitly in His holy Word. The information must be couched in language that will appeal to human logic and should consist of more than just vague generalities or insinuations.
I am reluctant to make any claims for what you are about to read, although I know very well that it could revolutionize your life. Do not scan or read lightly the material which follows. I ask only that you study it prayerfully and with an open mind. Then judge it on the basis of the Scriptures and your own spiritual convictions. If it is truth, the Holy Spirit will guide you into joyful recognition of it. My personal feeling is that you will find this experience to be the most exciting adventure you have ever had in God’s Word.
Our quest for truth will focus upon the twelfth chapter of Revelation. Limited time and space does not allow for an exhaustive study, but two principles will be given priority—accuracy and simplicity. Over twelve hundred years of history must be dealt with only briefly as we follow the absorbing story of the true church to its surprising climax. Further confirming evidence for the historical part of the prophecy has been provided in my book entitled “The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman.”
The Woman Symbolizes the Church
Revelation 12 is basically the narrative account of a beautiful, sun-clad woman and her descendants. “And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars” (Revelation 12:1).
Here we are introduced to one of the most familiar symbols in the Bible. In both the Old and the New Testaments, God represents His people by a woman. As the bridegroom, He is married to the church. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:2).
All through the Bible we can follow the record of this symbolism. God said in the Old Testament, “I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman” (Jeremiah 6:2). And again, “Say unto Zion, Thou art my people” (Isaiah 51:16). The church is called Zion and God compares it with a beautiful woman. In the Old Testament, Israel was the chosen people so often portrayed as being married to God.
In the New Testament, the true Israel of God is no longer a nation but a church composed of Jews and Gentiles who receive Christ as their Savior. Therefore, the woman of Revelation 12 flashes us the picture-story of the church at the time of Christ. The clothing of sunlight typifies the glorious New Covenant of grace, and the twelve stars represent the twelve apostles. The moon under her feet indicates the fading glory of the Old Covenant in the presence of the true Lamb of God.
Now begins the thrilling part! We are going to follow the unfolding future of that true church of our Lord Jesus. The next verses vividly delineate the course of truth through the ages. We want to know where that woman can be found TODAY! Don’t miss a step of the prophecy as we trace the vicissitudes of the true church right down to the present day!
The first thing we discover is that the woman is about to give birth to a baby. “And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads . . . and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne” (Revelation 12:2-5).
Who is this man-child destined to rule all nations and who was caught up to heaven? Only one person can meet this description—Jesus Christ. And who does the dragon represent, who tried to kill Christ at His birth? It was Herod, the representative of Rome, who sent out the order for all babies of two years and under to be slaughtered. Ordinarily, the dragon is used as a symbol of Satan, but in this case, the devil was working so closely with the Roman power to kill Jesus that the dragon also symbolizes Rome.
How did Jesus escape the diabolical decree of Herod? Joseph and Mary were warned of the danger in a dream and fled to Egypt with the infant. Later, after the death of the tyrant, they returned and settled in the town of Nazareth.
Even though the devil was foiled in his initial plot to kill Jesus, he did not abandon his purpose. Repeatedly, he sought to take the life of Jesus, and finally, he managed to bring Him to that mockery of a trial where He was tortured, crucified, and buried. But the grave could not contain the Son of God, and on the third day He burst out of the tomb. Later, He ascended to His Father in heaven.
Persecution of the Church
With no direct access to Jesus, the dragon (Rome) now turned his anger against the followers of Christ, the church: “And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child” (Revelation 12:13).
These words provide only a tiny hint of the horror of the violence which broke forth against the apostolic church. Practically all the early disciples and church leaders were martyred for their faith. Cruel pagan emperors turned the sporting arenas and coliseums into theaters of death for those who followed the true gospel.
Soon pagan Rome yielded to papal Rome, and the persecutions continued with even greater force. Millions died under the terrible inquisitions which sought to eradicate all opposition to the papal system. Historians estimate that during the Dark Ages more that fifty million people laid down their lives rather than yield up their Protestant faith.
But let’s follow the tragic story in our prophetic outline. Revelation 12:14 tells us what the true church did as the pressures of persecution built up to a climax: “And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.”
In order to escape extinction, the faithful Protestant refugees fled back into the Alpine mountains and valleys holding onto the true doctrine delivered by Jesus. Another book of Acts could be written about the heroism of the Waldenses, Huguenots, and Albigenses who refused to surrender their faith during those centuries of fierce oppression. God fought for them, and sometimes the pursuing armies of Rome were cut off by mysterious avalanches and rock slides. At other times the mountain streams were reddened by the blood of those faithful ones who sealed their devotion to the truth with their lives. The Revelation prophecy gives a symbolic picture of the desperate attempts made to wipe out those minority Christians who were now in hiding for their very survival: “And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood” (Revelation 12:15).
How long was the true church to remain out of sight in the wilderness? The prophecy declares it would be for “a time, times, and half a time.” How mysterious! What is meant by this strange description of the time period involved? When would it end? The answer is found in verse 6: “And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.”
Now the picture begins to clear up. One verse says the woman was in the wilderness for 1,260 days and the other verse says she was there for “a time, times, and half a time.” These two periods are equal. This means that a “time” has to be a year in prophetic symbolism, “times” is two years, and “half a time” is half a year. When we add up the one, the two, and the half, we get three and a half years. And that is equal to exactly 1,260 days, using the Bible reckoning of 30 days to the month.
There is one more principle of prophetic interpretation to take into account here. In symbolic Bible prophecy a day always stands for a year. You will find the key for that principle in Ezekiel 4:6: “I have appointed thee each day for a year.” It is laid down elsewhere in these words: “. . . forty days, each day for a year” (Numbers 14:34).
Please note that this applies only to symbolic prophecy, and cannot be read into other portions of the Scripture. A day is used for a year only in the setting of an obvious prophetic context. This places the woman in her wilderness hideaway for the full period of 1,260 literal years.
Our conclusion must be, then, that the true church could not appear in the world until the end of the 1,260 years. Did such a thing happen to the true people of God? How long did the papal power continue to suppress the true doctrines by the exercise of her religio-political authority?
Here is a fascinating point of history. In a.d. 538 a decree by Emperor Justinian went into effect which assigned absolute spiritual preeminence to the church of Rome. Gradually, this religious tyranny drifted into union with civil powers until eventually kings were forced to seek permission from the pope before they could begin to rule. This authority remained in force until the year 1798 when Europe was rocked by the French Revolution. In the subsequent rebellion of the oppressed peasants against the privileged clergy, the pope was captured in 1798. The papal property was confiscated, and the French Directory government decreed that there would be no more Bishop of Rome. The oppressive rule of the papacy ended exactly 1,260 years after it was inaugurated in A.D. 538.
Three Marks of the True Church
This brings us to a most important observation: THE TRUE CHURCH COULD NOT APPEAR IN THE WORLD UNTIL AFTER THE YEAR 1798. It was to remain in hiding until the end of the 1,260 years, and that “wilderness” period ended in 1798. We have before us now one of the most amazing marks of identification for the true church. It is not based on some emotional feeling or upon some strained interpretation of a single Bible text. It is rooted in a prophetic revelation of a specific time period which can be verified by scores of historical records. The woman (church) simply could not make her appearance until the inhibiting powers of papal opposition had been taken out of the way. That prophesied event took place in 1798, and the truth which had been clothed in sackcloth now began to emerge from obscurity, soon to appear as the glorious remnant of the woman.
Now we are brought to an actual description of the woman as she would appear before the world sometime after the year 1798: “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17).
This text is one of the most crucial to be found in the entire Bible. Nowhere is there a more concise description of the last-day remnant of the original apostolic faith as it was preserved through the ages. Here is an actual verbal definition of the true church for the present day. It is so important that we are going to analyze every word in order to extract the full meaning. If the true church can be discovered at all in the Bible, this will be the verse to reveal it.
“AND THE DRAGON . . .” Who is the dragon? There can be no question on this point. In Revelation 12:9 the dragon is called “the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world.”
“WAS WROTH . . .” What does that mean? “Wroth” is the Old English word for “angry.” It simply means that Satan was angry. Whom was he angry with? “WROTH WITH THE WOMAN . . .” Who was the woman? We have already found that she is the true apostolic church, representing the great, original teachings of Jesus.      “AND WENT TO MAKE WAR WITH THE REMNANT OF HER SEED . . .” Here a new word is introduced into the picture. Satan is going to fight against the REMNANT of the true church. What is a remnant? It is the last end piece on a bolt of cloth. It is exactly like the first piece that came off the bolt, but it happens to be at the very end and is always a small piece.
What does this tell us about the remnant of the woman? It is the last part of the true church, at the very end of time, which will be holding the exact same doctrines as did the early, apostolic church. But let’s read on.
“WHICH KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD. . .” What commandments would this be referring to? This designates the great moral law written by the finger of God on tables of stone. The Ten Commandments reflect the character of God, reveal His will for all His creatures, and form the basis for all morality and true worship.
Here we are confronted with the second intriguing mark of identification of the true church. Not only must it arise some time after the year 1798, but on the authority of the Word of God, it would have to be keeping ALL the Ten Commandments of God.
But now let’s finish reading this fantastic verse. “AND HAVE THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST.” Here is another characteristic of the true remnant. Not only will this last-day church arise after 1798 and keep all the Ten Commandments, but it will have the testimony of Jesus. But what is the testimony of Jesus? That is an unfamiliar phrase, and we need more than human wisdom to uncover its meaning
Notice how the Bible specifically defines this expression for us. If this text truly contains the heart of ultimate truth for us, the Word of God would have to clarify every part of it. The definition is provided by the word of an angel sent all the way from heaven to explain it to John. “I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).
There it is! We know now without a shadow of doubt that the testimony of Jesus is the SPIRIT OF PROPHECY. And this is the third great mark of identity for the last-day true church!
Let me ask you something: Does a spirit of excitement rise up in you as these plain biblical statements zero in on the mostsought-after secret in the Word of God? We are getting closer and closer to identifying the special people of God in our day and their special message. And we are doing it by allowing the Bible to make the identification. We have not fabricated a single one of these three definitive characteristics. No one can honestly challenge their application to the end-time church of Jesus Christ. That remnant church will have to possess all three of these biblical tags of identity:
1. ARISE AFTER 1798      2. KEEP ALL THE TEN COMMANDMENTS      3. HAVE THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY
I know that some are already puzzling over that third mark. The “spirit of prophecy” is just about as incomprehensible as the “testimony of Jesus.” But stay with me, and we will get the explanation for that point very shortly.
A Fourth Identifying Characteristic
Right now I would like to add a fourth crucial mark of identification to our list. We have found this church to be the last, end-piece of historic truth. It will be proclaiming the final message of God just before Jesus returns. In fact, if God has any kind of special counsel or warning for the world at the end of time, He would surely give that message through His last-day remnant church. I think we can all see the logic of this conclusion.
Does God indeed have such a message, and is it identified clearly in the Bible? Jesus indicated that the proclaiming of a certain definite truth would immediately precede the conclusion of human history. Listen to His words: “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come” (Matthew 24:14).
The last sign of Christ’s coming will be a worldwide preaching of the “gospel of the kingdom.” After that, the end will come. Now follow me closely. John the Revelator actually saw in vision the fulfillment of Christ’s words. He wrote, “And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice . . .” (Revelation 14:6, 7).
The next few verses describe precisely what that special last proclamation of the gospel will consist of. Then immediately John said, “And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle . . . and he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped” (Revelation 14:14-16).
Did you catch that? The end comes just as soon as this particular “gospel” message has gone to every nation on earth. Jesus said the same thing, “this gospel . . . shall be preached in all the world . . . and then shall the end come.”
I submit to you that whatever this message is, it has to be the most urgent and compelling one that human ears have ever heard. Both John and Jesus testify that upon completion it will usher in the glorious kingdom of Christ.
Can we know what that final warning will contain? John spelled it out so simply that none need be in doubt. “Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come” (Revelation 14:7). Notice that a part of this last call of God will be announcing that the judgment has already started. “IS COME,” not “will come.” We must look and listen for the preaching of such a pre-advent judgment message to all nations of the earth.
The next part of the first angel’s message is this: “And worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of water” (Revelation 14:7). Does that sound familiar? It should, for it is quoted almost word for word right from the fourth commandment of the decalogue, which strongly indicates that the Sabbath will be a part of the “gospel” proclamation which must go to the whole world just before the end.
How do you worship God as the Creator? Right in the heart of the Ten Commandments God wrote the answer: “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it” (Exodus 20:11).
True worship stems from a recognition of God’s creative power and authority, and the Sabbath is God’s own established sign that He is the maker of everything. Over and over throughout the Bible God claims worship BECAUSE He created all things. “thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: FOR THOU HAST CREATED ALL THINGS.” (Revelation 4:11).
God challenged the false gods repeatedly because they could not create. “The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth . . . He hath made the earth by his power” (Jeremiah 10: 11, 12). “God himself . . . formed the earth and made it . . . I am the Lord; and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:18).
The Sabbath was instituted by God as a great reminder-sign of His sovereign authority as the only God to be worshiped. The Creator set in motion the arbitrary cycle of the seven-day week to mark off the true Sabbath, so that the world would be without excuse in knowing whom to worship and when. Thus the first angel’s message called for men to “worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea”—a call to true Sabbath-keeping.
The second and third angels’ messages described by John can be summarized briefly: “Babylon is fallen . . . If any man worship the beast . . . and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God” (Revelation 14:8-10). Contrary to the opinion of many, this plain, bold preaching of the beast message is included in the everlasting gospel of God’s kingdom. Even warnings against the mark of the beast will be heralded to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. THEN THE END WILL COME!
We are now prepared to add a fourth characteristic to the list of three others. The true remnant church of the last days will surely be used of God to carry His final warning message to all inhabitants of planet earth. That message will include (a) the judgment hour is come, (b) true Sabbath worship, (c) the fall of spiritual Babylon, and (d) the mark of the beast.
This completes the amazing array of specific characteristics of the present day’s true church:
1. ARISES AFTER 1798      2. KEEPS ALL TEN COMMANDMENTS      3. HAS THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY      4. PREACHES THE MESSAGE OF THREE ANGELS (Revelation 14) ON A WORLD-WIDE SCALE
Could any thinking person be indifferent toward what we have discovered thus far? We have in our hands right now the key to unlock one of the most fantastic spiritual secrets in the world. God has concentrated all the clues in this one, tremendous, prophetic chapter of Revelation. Look at the marks of identification. This is God’s list, not mine. I simply lifted them from the inspired pages of God’s Book. What do they tell us about the true church today?
First of all, it could not have arisen before 1798. This eliminates most of the great popular Protestant churches of the world. Practically all of them were formed before 1798. Secondly, it would have to be a church which keeps all the Ten Commandments. At first glance, this would seem to be a very poor definitive test for discovering which church is right. Surely all of them would teach and practice obedience to the great moral law of God— or would they? The fact is that very few contemporary denominations even lay claim to keeping all the Ten Commandments. Most of them admit freely that they do not observe the seventh-day Sabbath required by the fourth commandment. They observe the first day of the week instead of the Sabbath.
The Spirit of Prophecy
Under the inspiration of God, John declared that the remnant of the woman would have the “testimony of Jesus.” Since that expression is somewhat ambiguous, John later gave a clarification which still leaves much to be desired. He said simply, “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).
At least this is moving in the right direction, but we must now discover what John means by that expression, “spirit of prophecy.” Whatever it is, it ranks high with God, because He designates it as one of the ways by which to recognize His true church in these last days.
The picture begins to clear up when we examine the full context of the statement. An angel appears to John, and John falls upon the ground in awe and admiration. Said the Revelator, “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God; for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).      In this verse, please notice who is described as having the testimony of Jesus, or the spirit of prophecy. Only John’s “brethren” are identified as having it. Now we must seek for some further information as to who John’s brethren were. The Word does not fail us. In Revelation 22:8, 9 John repeats the story of the angel and adds a little more detail. “And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets . . . worship God.” John’s brethren were the prophets, and they alone are said to have the spirit of prophecy.
Suddenly, the whole puzzle falls into place. The only ones who had the spirit of prophecy were the prophets themselves. If just knowing prophecy and preaching it could be called the “spirit of prophecy,” then many modern teachers and evangelists might qualify. But the Bible makes it exceedingly clear that it is the actual ability to prophesy. In other words, it is the gift of prophecy. Only the prophets had it.
This fact is supported by the apostle Paul. “That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ (spirit of prophecy) was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:5-7).
Here the testimony of Jesus is called a “gift” instead of the “spirit” of prophecy. And the implication is very strong that the gift will be in operation at the return of our Savior.
With this inspired insight from Paul we are back on familiar ground again. We have no problem with the term “gift of prophecy.” The New Testament epistles are filled with references to all the gifts of the Spirit, including the gift of prophecy. Paul told the church at Ephesus just how and when the gifts were bestowed: “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men” (Ephesians 4:8).
Little comment is needed on this. It is a well-known fact that when Jesus returned to heaven He left certain special “gifts” or abilities with His people on earth. In fact, they are named: “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers” (Ephesians 4:11).
For what reason did Jesus endow certain ones in the church with these appropriate spiritual gifts? “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12). He did it to build up the believers and strengthen the church. These gifts were to mature and perfect the leaders of the body of Christ as they sought to edify the members.
The next verse tells exactly how long those gifts would be needed in the church. “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the nature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).
If language has any meaning at all, these words convey one idea very clearly. All the gifts which Christ placed with His church were to continue operating until the very end of time. They would be needed to bring the church to perfection and to the fullness of Christ’s stature.
Dare we ask the next obvious question? Where are these gifts today? If they were intended by our Lord to do their sanctifying work right down to the end of time, then they should all be seen operating in the churches around us. Let’s inquire if they are. Do we find teachers in most churches today? The answer is yes. What about pastors and evangelists? Practically all denominations have them. What can we say about apostles? Since this word literally means “missionaries,” (coming from a Greek word meaning “one who is sent”), again we can say that most modern churches qualify on this particular gift.
So far, so good. But we have one more inquiry—what about prophets? From most religious quarters there is no ready reply to this question. Practically no church claims that such a thing has ever been a part of its ministry.
But why? If all the other gifts are necessary, why should prophets not be necessary as well? It was certainly counted so in the early church. In fact, all the spiritual gifts were very much in evidence, according to the book of Acts. “Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon . . .” (Acts 13:1). Here we have evidence that two of the gifts, teachers and prophets, were a part of the church at Antioch. Then in Acts 21:9 we read that a “man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.” Notice that these four women from one family were appointed by the Spirit to be prophetesses. They had the spirit of prophecy.
Why Did Prophets Disappear from the Church?
It is obvious that all the gifts were operating equally in the apostolic age and immediately afterward. But why did the gift of prophecy seem to drop out of sight after two or three hundred years into the Christian era? We do not have the same record of it through the ages as we do the other gifts. Why don’t we find prophets in all the churches of today along with pastors, teachers, etc.?
We dare not avoid the question as so many millions of Christians are currently doing. The Word of God meets the issue head-on and pulls no punches in the process. It is easy to see why most churches try to ignore the absence of this gift in their midst, especially when we discover the reason for its absence.
That post-apostolic period is not the first time that the spirit of prophecy had been removed from among God’s people. The truth is that God was dealing with the church then in the same way He had always dealt with His people. All through the Old Testament God led and instructed them by two divine agencies—the law and the prophets. Through the prophet Jeremiah God spoke to Israel, “If ye will not hearken to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you, To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you . . . Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth” (Jeremiah 26:4-6).
THE LAW AND PROPHETS! The two go together. Not only do they refer to the writings of Scripture, but they also refer to the two means of divine guidance. “Keep my law and hear my prophets” was the requirement of God. And the sacred record indicates that if they rejected one of those divine agencies, God would remove the other also, because they were actually rejecting His leadership. On numerous occasions the children of Israel turned away from the law of God, only to find the prophetic voice silenced as well.
Jeremiah wrote, “The law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD” (Lamentations 2:9). Ezekiel put it this way: “Then shall they seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients” (Ezekiel 7:26). The wise man laid down the very same principle: “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he” (Proverbs 29:18).
In times of open disobedience of His law, God used the prophets only to rebuke and to call back, not for counsel or guidance. When they turned from the law, they understood that they were also forfeiting the only other avenue by which they could receive divine direction. In his apostasy Saul cried out, “God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams” (1 Samuel 28:15).
We have a perfect example of this in Ezekiel 20:3 when the people came to inquire after God’s counsel. “Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the LORD God; Are ye come to enquire of me? As I live, saith the LORD God, I will not be enquired of by you.” Why would He not answer them in this case? Verses 11-13 give the answer: “And I gave them my statutes, and showed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them. Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them. But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.”
Surely we can see that the reason God gave no divine direction was because they _had forsaken His law and had broken His Sabbath. It was the violation of the fourth commandment which especially provoked the displeasure of God.
Now we are prepared to deal with the question of prophets in the New Testament, and why they disappeared after two or three centuries. What happened to God’s law at the very same time the gift of prophecy disappeared from the church? The history of that early period shows that the Sabbath was set aside in favor of the pagan day of the sun. A disgraceful compromise with heathen sun-worship led to an open rejection of the true seventh-day Sabbath. And when this happened, God did exactly what He had always done before when His people turned from His holy law; He withdrew the guidance of the spirit of prophecy. Prophets disappeared from the church.      This brings us face-to-face with an exciting and challenging question. Is there reason to believe that when the church restores the law and begins to observe the Sabbath again, that God will also restore the gift of prophecy to the church? This leads us right back to that dynamic prophecy of Revelation 12 and God’s description of the true remnant. Now, for the first time, we can see the full significance of that seventeenth verse: “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
Do you see it? The law, so long neglected, is right back where it belongs—in the church. And hand-in-hand with the law is the testimony of Jesus, which is the spirit of prophecy. Think of it! The law and the prophets get back together again in the last remnant piece of God’s true apostolic church! All the gifts are again operating as they did in the days before the apostasy.
Remember that a remnant has to be exactly like the original except that it is on the very end, and it is a small piece. This fantastic prophecy reveals that there will be an end- time restoration of the faith of the apostles. The same Sabbath will be restored. The same gifts of the spirit will be manifested, and all the great apostolic doctrines will be stripped of the effects of 1,260 years of papal distortion.
A church, called the remnant, must appear on the scene some time after 1798. It will restore the foundation of many generations by keeping the Sabbath, the same one that Jesus made for man during creation week, and the same Sabbath He observed when He was on the earth. In that church will be manifested the true gift of prophecy. Under the anointing of unusual spiritual blessing and power that remnant church will carry the special last warning message of Revelation 14 to all the countries in the world. As we have already discovered, this glorious gospel of the three angels includes the present-hour judgment, the Sabbath, the fall of Babylon, and the beast message.
This church is identified again by John in these words: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12). Do not overlook the fact that these commandment-keeping saints are empowered to do what they do only by trusting Jesus. When you find them, they will not be boasting of their righteousness, or depending on their good works to save them. Above all people they will have a loving, personal relationship with the Savior they worship. Their obedience will be based solely upon the merits of Christ’s imputed and imparted righteousness. They will keep the commandments because they have been saved by grace and not to gain any favor with God.
By this time you are probably in a state of excited curiosity as to whether any church in existence can meet the incredible conditions laid down in the Bible. Many claim to be the true church, but their claims are not based upon the requirements of the Word of God. Only those who fit the four specific marks outlined in the book of Revelation can be qualified for consideration. Just suppose we could find only one church in the world today which meets all these biblical tests. Could we expect it to be a perfect church with flawless members in it? On the contrary, it would surely be composed of average men and women, subject to the same failings as all other human beings. It would have to be a comparatively small church to meet the criteria of “remnant.” Jesus said the way of truth was narrow and “few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:14). Again He declared, “And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man” (Luke 17:26). None should be deceived by trusting great numbers, the majority. The saved will be comparable to the eight souls taken into the ark at the time of the great flood. Truth has never been popular, and it will be less so in the final age of sensual pleasure and materialism. The remnant church will not be found among the great, popular churches with their indulgent life-styles. Said Jesus, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).
Paul’s counsel was: “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord” (2 Corinthians 6:17). To Titus he wrote, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly . . . a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:11-14).
These and many other related verses seem to indicate that the true church of the last days will be looked upon by the world in the same manner that Jesus and His followers were esteemed in their day. Since the remnant is merely an extension of the great original, it will be despised by the majority, counted as peculiar, and finally, like the early church, as worthy of death. The book of Revelation exposes a diabolical plan of the end-time “beast” power to enforce a mark on every individual, and those who will not receive that mark will be condemned to death. As you might suspect at this point, those who resist that beast mark will be those who “keep the commandments of God, and have the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12). In other words, the remnant church.
Again, it must be emphasized that all those who belong to the remnant church will not necessarily be saved. Like all other churches it consists of ordinary people who must maintain a constant saving relationship with Jesus Christ. It is undoubtedly true that there will be people saved and lost out of all denominations and sects. Every person will be judged on the basis of revealed truth, and how he obeyed what he knew. Members of the remnant church will have great light, and they will be judged accordingly. Many will fail the test, because they depend on their knowledge of the truth rather than the saving merits of Christ’s righteousness. This is why it is altogether possible for many even in the “remnant” church to be lost. Others who have not so great light will be accepted if they know Jesus and walk in all the light that has been revealed.
But after making those observations, we must also concede that God has a special church with a special message which is designated as the “remnant” of the woman. It will appear near the end, holding the same doctrines as did the apostolic church, keeping all the Ten Commandments (including the Sabbath), having the gift of prophecy, and preaching Revelation 14 to the entire world.
Does Any Church Meet the Four Tests?
Is there such a church in the world right now which meets all the requirements of these biblical texts? God does not leave us to wonder. He has made the marks so distinct and clear and simple in the Bible that all can know what to look for. Is it difficult to match the four great distinguishing signs with the hundreds of confusing church names and bodies? Not at all.
How many of those churches arose after 1798? A small minority. And how many of this minority are keeping all the Ten Commandments, including the Sabbath? Very few. They can be counted on the fingers of one hand. How many of these few also have the spirit of prophecy? And finally, how many are proclaiming the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14 in all the countries and languages of earth?
The sifting and eliminating has led us down to just one church, believe it or not. It would be less than honest to leave you hanging at this juncture, wondering if God had described some impossible, hybrid church that would never exist. Out of all the ecclesiastical systems in existence at this date, there is only one that fully meets the biblical criteria of the remnant.
This must be our conclusion based upon historical facts and not because we have any axe to grind for some particular church. The inspired record of Revelation 12 contains no emotional bias toward any existing church. The most disinterested person would have to come to the same conclusion after examining the full, prophetic picture. This leaves no room for boasting or pride. The secret was not revealed by any man but by the Word of God.

As we name the church, it must be with some trepidation. There will always be a few ready to charge us with sectarianism in spite of the undeniable evidence before us. Others will allow personal prejudice to rob them of this glorious truth.

The only church fulfilling the prophetic description of the true remnant is the Seventh-day Adventist church. Arising around 1844 this movement of destiny began the predicted program of restoring the truth which had been lost or distorted during the Dark Ages. One after another of the original doctrines of Christ and the early church were returned to their former luster and beauty. As the authority of the law and the Sabbath was re-established, God did exactly what He had promised to do: He restored the beautiful spirit of prophecy to the remnant church. That gift was manifested through the life and teachings of Mrs. Ellen G. White. This young woman, with only a grammar school education, received special revelations that extended over a period of more than six decades. From her inspired pen poured more than seventy books, many of which were acclaimed by the highest secular critics to be matchless in form and content.

Although the gift of prophecy served in a powerful manner to give impetus to the new movement, it professed only to be a “lesser light” to the sovereign authority of the Holy Scriptures. In harmony with the Bible rule to “try the spirits,” every manifestation had to be tested by the Word of God. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20). Had her writings not conformed to the Bible in every respect, they would have been rejected as counterfeit, but they spoke in perfect agreement with the Scriptures. In no way have they been considered a part of the sacred canon of Scripture. Though inspired by the same Spirit, they do not add to nor take away from the Holy Writ, but like a magnifying glass they bring out the beauty and truth of the Word.

Perhaps the greatest wonder of all is how the emerging remnant church, in the providence of God, settled upon the very same doctrines of Revelation 14—the ones specified by Jesus and John as the final message—as the heart of its teaching. But there is yet another miracle! How could that infant church, with only a few hundred members in 1860, reach out with its unpopular message and evangelize every country in the world? Yet, that is exactly what has happened! The work of Seventh-day Adventists has been established in countries representing nearly 100 percent of the world population. And every one of these unique doctrines of Revelation 14, including the judgment, the Sabbath, and the beast message, is being witnessed to those nations.

There are several churches which qualify on the first point of identity, and there are a few who fit the second also; but, it is a singular fact that only one church conforms perfectly to all four points. With a simplicity and logic that appeals to human reason, God has fulfilled His promise to guide us into all truth. The next move must be up to us. What will we do about the persuasive conclusions to which we have been led?

No one can avoid making a decision over this kind of truth. We can decide to accept it, or reject it. We can choose to obey or disobey. But one thing is certain—you can never be the same again, no matter which decision you make. Conviction has a way of staying with us even when we try to ignore or banish it. You can never forget the things you have learned about the true church. You are now in possession of the most sought-after secret in the whole Bible.

I would urge you not to make a decision to accept it just because it has convinced you intellectually. No one should join the church, which is the body of Christ, unless they have been drawn spiritually into a relationship with Jesus.

Behind the fantastic prophecy of the true remnant I want you to see the Lamb of God dying on the cross in your place. He hangs there because of sin—because someone did not love Him enough to obey Him. “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).

We can’t obey Him until we have knelt, broken-hearted because of our sin, and accepted Him as Lord and Savior. Love for Him provides both the motive and the power to fulfill His Word. If you haven’t accepted Him already, make that your first decision. Then under the strength of that new love relationship follow Him into service as a member of the true remnant church.

The Seat of the Dragon

Part 1

Jesus said: „

Make sure that no man deceives you.‟

Satan cannot be exposed if we don‟t speak about him –this is not a way ofhonouring him, but exposing him. He will come to us as an angel of light and Jesus as well.

There are 2 contradicting „lights‟, one of which has the ability to deceive us. The point of the greatest interest is the point of the greatest contrast. Satan has been a liar from the beginning.

History of the Reformation of the sixteen Century

, J.H.Merle D‟aubigne,Book Vi, Chapter XII, Pp215, Martin Luther, 1483-1546 writes:“Luther..prover, by the revelations of Daniel and St. John, by the epistles of St. Paul, St. Peter,, and St. Jude, that the reign of Antichrist, predicted and described in the Bible, was the Papacy.

” Thomas Crammer, 14891556 inWorks by Crammer, Vol 1, pp6-7 wrote: “Whereof it followeth Rome to be the seat of antichristand the pope to be very antichrist himself. I could prove the same by many other scriptures, old writers and strong reasons

” (Referring to prophecies in Revelation and Daniel). In the book All

roads lead to Rome, Dorchestor House Publications, Michael de Semlyen, pp205, 1991: “A great cloud of witnesses: Wycliffe, Tyndale, Luther, Calvin,

Bunyan, the translator of the King James Bible and the men who published the Westminster and Baptist confessions of Faith; Sir Isaac Newton, Wesley Whifield, Jonathan Edwards and more recently Spurgeon, Bishop J.C. Ryle and Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones; these men among countless others all saw the office of the Papacy as the antichrist.

This has been common knowledge for many years. Why don‟t the media tell us these things? Why don‟t we know? Because it‟s being covered up.

Words spoken by Our Lady of LaSalette to Melanie Calvat in 1846 AD, afully approved Church Apparition: “

Rome will lose faith and become the seatof the Antichrist.”

W.F. Strojie, a conservative Roman Catholic scholar in TheLast Days of the Catholic Church, 1978, pp3 writes: “I scoff at the notion that anyone other than a pope could be the antichrist.

The false system of worship headed up by the pope will deceive the whole word.

.but how?

In Rev 13:2 „

and the beast (antichrist) that i saw was like a leopard; its feet

were like a bear‟s and its mouth was like a lion‟s mouth. And to it the dragon (satan)gave his power and his throne and great authority.‟ Rev 12:7,9 „And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan

..‟ Also Rev 20:2. Michael means

he who is what God is‟.

The

war in heaven was about worship and is continued today on earth.

As most people will not bow down to satan in his true form and character,

he will have to

trick us into worshipping him through deception. Math

24:4-

5 „And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man

deceive you

.

Satan cannot do this work on earth by himself therefore he gives his power

to a human being. We have to look for the

link between them.

Rev 13:3-

4: „..all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped

the

dragon which gave power unto the beast‟.

In other words, the antichrist

beast will transfix humanity that the entire world will wonder after him and

by doing that, the

worship that we give the Papacy or the antichrist beast,

is actually being

channelled through to satan. So where satan gives the

papacy his throne, his power and his authority, he does so that he (satan)

can receive worship. So

by acknowledging the papacy and by following

what he says we must do, we are actually channelling worship through

to satan

.

The Tabernacle

: the entire sanctuary in the Old Testament is a depiction

of the gospel in the New Testament

that we have today and is fulfilled in

the NT. Not only does it depict the NT gospel, but it also point towards a

heavenly sanctuary

(Heb 8:1&2) [discussed later]. In this sanctuary

system‟s Holy of Holiest, is the Throne of God.

When you walked into the earthly sanctuary, you walked in through a

single entrance

on the eastern side and you faced west, looking straight at

the Holy place, the Most Holy Place and the Shekinah glory, in other words

facing the light of God. Eze 8:15-

18 „Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen

this, O son of man? Turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater

abominations

than these

. And he brought me into the inner court of the

Lord‟s h

porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men with their

backs

towards the temple of the Lord

and their faces toward east; and they

worshipped the sun

toward the east

.‟ Inside the temple of God (inside the

religious system), there are a number of people who turned their back on

God (but

pretend to worship God) and they are worshipping the sun. When

turning, you are looking west, out of the sanctuary.

The

two covering cherubs of the ark point toward the two covering

angels/cherubs covering God‟s glory. Satan, when he was Lucifer, was one

of those 2 covering cherubs Eze 28:15-

19 „I will cast thee as profane out of

the mountain of God and I will destroy thee, O

covering cherub

,..‟ Satan

wanted that S

hekinah glory for himself. Lucifer means „light bearer‟. Lumin

= is the number of light

the way in which we measure light. Isaiah 14:12-

14 „

Four thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt

my throne above the stars of God;

I will sit also upon the mount of the

congregation in the sides of

the north; I will ascend above the heights of the

clouds;

I will be like the most High.

temple?

The Obelisk

The obelisk has been a part of pagan worship from the days of

antiquity. Obelisks have played a large part in the worship of Egypt.

Originally, the obelisk was associated with

sun worship. Pagans believed

that the obelisk also had a

sexual significance. Realizing that through

sexual union, life was produced, the phallus was considered, along with the

sun, a symbol of life. In order for the obelisk to carry out its intended

symbolism, it was placed upright

erect. Thus, the obelisk pointed up toward

the sun. ..the obelisk was often placed at the entrance of pagan temples

.”

http://www.godsonlygospel.com/pagan%20Connection2.htm

. This is a symbol of

the male power with the female sun energy

. If you knew history and

understood it, that‟s not something you would want outs

ide your temple if

you were a Christian. In the Bible they are referred to as „Bethshemesh‟. Jer

43:13 „

He shall break also the images of Bethshemesh.. houses of the

gods

..‟ James Hall in the Illustrated Dictionary of Symbols in Eastern and

Western Art

, published by HarperCollins, 1994: “Of the several functions of

the Pillar (obelisk) among early peoples, the Egyptian obelisk was worshiped

as the dwelling place of the

sun-god.

” The obelisk has obvious pagan

affiliations and yet,

Mary and child, but yet all pagan

religions

This circular disk in the halfmoon/crescent moon is also found in Egyptian

symbolism on top of the all-seeing eye. When the pope holds up the

eucharist

for all to see in a process called transubstantiation (where the

body of Christ is literally turned into this bread

), they then place it into a

monstrous, with a circular disk = fulfilling a perfect example of a Baal-

Hadad. The Baal-Hadad was a sungod that was worshipped, with the moon

representing the sea as the sun would dip down behind the horizon every

night and die, just to be re-incarnated again. Today,

everytime when a

mass is done and pope Benedict is showing this sun-disk

satan could bring sun-worship into the church? Absolutely.

The Bride of Christ

28 Nov
The Bible says there is but one body, or church, into which Jesus calls His end-time people – the bride of Christ. To some, this is unnerving, as there are thousands of different churches today that call themselves Christian.  Virtually every one claims to be God’s church, yet they each differ widely in biblical interpretation, faith, and practice.  It’s quite impossible for the honest seeker of truth to investigate the claims of each one. However, we can be thankful that Jesus has solved this dilemma for us by describing His church in such detail that you can easily identify it!  That description, vivid and powerful, is found in Revelation 12 and 14, and it will thrill you with amazing truths that will help you in the end times.  Please read Revelation 12:1-17 before beginning your journey of discovery into these transforming truths.

1. By what prophetic symbol does Jesus represent His true church?

“I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman.” Jeremiah 6:2.  “And say unto Zion, Thou art my people.” Isaiah 51:16.

Answer:   We learned in Study Guide 22 that Jesus symbolizes His true, pure church (Zion) as a pure woman and an apostate church as a harlot.  A few other texts which also utilize this symbolism are 2 Corinthians 11:2 Ephesians 5:22, 23 and Revelation 19:7, 8.

2. In Revelation 12:1, Jesus symbolizes His church as a woman “clothed with the sun,” with “the moon under her feet,” and wearing “a crown of twelve stars.”  What do these symbols mean?

Answer:   A.  The sun represents Jesus, His gospel, and His righteousness. “The Lord God is a sun.” Psalms 84:11.  (See also Malachi 4:2.)  Without Jesus there is no salvation (Acts 4:12).  More than anything else, Jesus wants His church to overflow with His presence and glory.
B. “The moon under her feet” represents the sacrificial system of the Old Testament.  As the moon reflects the light of the sun, so the sacrificial system was helpful spiritually only as it reflected light from the Messiah to come (Hebrews 10:1).
C.  The “crown of twelve stars” represents the work of the 12 disciples, which crowned the early years of the New Testament church.

The baby mentioned in Revelation chapter 12 is Jesus.

The baby mentioned in Revelation chapter 12 is Jesus.

3. Next, the prophecy states that the woman is in labor, about to deliver a baby who would one day rule all nations with a rod of iron.  She then delivered the “man child,” and later He was taken up to God’s throne in heaven (Revelation 12:1, 2, 5).  Who was this baby?

Answer:   The baby was Jesus.  He will one day rule all nations with a rod of iron (Revelation 19:13-16; Psalms 2:7-9).  Jesus, who was crucified for our sins, was raised from the dead and ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9-11).  His resurrection power in our lives is one of Jesus’ essential gifts to His people (Philippians 3:10).

The great red dragon is Satan, who at Jesus' birth was working through pagan Rome.

The great red dragon is Satan, who at Jesus’ birth was working through pagan Rome.

4. Revelation 12:3, 4 introduces “a great red dragon” who hated the “man child” and tried to kill him at birth.  You may remember this dragon from Study Guide 20.  Who was the dragon?

Answer:   The dragon represents Satan, who was cast out of heaven (Revelation 12:7-9) and who was working at the time of Jesus’ birth through the pagan Roman empire.  The ruler who tried to kill Jesus at birth was Herod, a king under pagan Rome.  He killed all the male babies of Bethlehem, hoping that one of them would be Jesus (Matthew 2:16).

The

The “third part of the stars” represent the rebellious angels who were cast out of heaven with Lucifer.

5. What is the meaning of the “seven heads” and “ten horns” of the dragon, and of “the third part of the stars of heaven” being cast to the earth?

Answer:   A.  The “seven heads” represent the seven hills or mountains upon which Rome was built (Revelation 17:9, 10).  We have now encountered a beast with seven heads and 10 horns three times in our Study Guides (Revelation 12:3 13:1 17:3).
B.  The “ten horns” represent the governments, or nations, that support the major powers in their oppression of God’s people and church.  During pagan Rome’s tenure (Revelation 12:3, 4), they represented the 10 barbarian tribes that supported the papacy in eventually bringing down the Roman empire (Daniel 7:23, 24).  These tribes later became modern Europe.  In the last days, they represent all the nations of the world united in the end-time coalition (Revelation 16:14 17:12, 13, 16) which will support “Babylon the great” in her warfare against God’s people.
C. “The third part of the stars of heaven” are the angels who supported Lucifer in his insurrection in heaven and who were cast out with him (Revelation 12:9 Luke 10:18 Isaiah 14:12).
A Review and Summary
Thus far, the prophecy has covered the following Bible facts:
1. God’s true church appears, symbolized as a pure woman.
2. Jesus is born into the church.
3. Satan, working through King Herod of pagan Rome, tries to kill baby Jesus.
4. Satan’s plan is unsuccessful.
5. Jesus’ ascension is pictured.

Many millions were burned at the stake because of Satan's persecution.

Many millions were burned at the stake because of Satan’s persecution.

6. What did Satan do after he failed in his plan to destroy baby Jesus?

“He persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.”  Revelation 12:13.

Answer:   Since he was no longer able to attack Jesus personally, he aimed his fury and persecution at God’s church and His people.
Six Identifying Points In Revelation chapters 12 and 14, Jesus gives us six descriptive points to use in identifying His end-time church.  Watch for them as you study the remainder of this Study Guide.

God's people fled to the solitary places of the earth to escape persecution.

God’s people fled to the solitary places of the earth to escape persecution.

7. What did the woman (church) do to protect herself, and what is the “wilderness” spoken of in Revelation 12:6, 14?

Answer:   A. Verses 6 and 14 say, “The woman fled into the wilderness,” where she was protected for “a time, and times, and half a time” (or 1,260 literal years) from the wrath of Satan who was then working through papal Rome. The “two wings” represent the protection and support God gave the church during her time in the “wilderness” (Exodus 19:4 Deuteronomy 32:11). The time spent in the wilderness is the same 1,260-year period of papal prominence and persecution (A.D. 538 to 1798) that Jesus repeatedly mentioned in prophecy. One prophetic day equals one literal year (Ezekiel 4:6).
B. The term “wilderness” refers to the solitary places of earth (mountains, caves, forests, etc.) where God’s people could hide in seclusion and thus escape total annihilation (Hebrews 11:37, 38). And hide they did, the Waldenses, Albigenses, Huguenots, and many others. God’s people (His church) would have been obliterated if they had not fled and hid in the wilderness during this devastating persecution by the papacy. (In one 40-year period, “from the beginning of the order of the Jesuits, in the year 1540, to 1580, nine hundred thousand were destroyed. One hundred fifty thousand perished in the Inquisition in 30 years.” 1) At least 50 million people died for their faith during this 1,260-year time period. God’s church did not exist as an official organization during this 1,260-year time period. From A.D. 538 to 1798 it was alive but not identifiable as an organization. When it came out of hiding after the 1,260 years, it still had the same doctrine and characteristics as the apostolic church, which entered  the “wilderness” in A.D. 538.
Note:  We have now discovered our first two identification points for Jesus’ end-time church:
1. It would not exist officially as an organization between A.D. 538 and 1798.
2. It would arise and do its end-time work after 1798.
There are many loving, genuine Christians in churches that were officially in existence before 1798.  But none of these churches can be God’s end-time church into which Jesus is calling all His people, because Jesus’ end-time church had to arise after 1798. This means that most of the popular Protestant churches cannot be God’s end-time church because they existed officially before 1798.

A remnant of cloth is the last remaining portion of a bolt. It is exactly like the first piece from the same bolt.

A remnant of cloth is the last remaining portion of a bolt. It is exactly like the first piece from the same bolt.

8. In Revelation 12:17, God calls His end-time church the remnant.  What does the word “remnant” mean?

Answer:   It means the last remaining portion.  In reference to Jesus’ church, it means His church of the very last days, which is identical in doctrine to the apostolic church.

God's remnant church will keep His commandments and will also have the gift of prophecy.

God’s remnant church will keep His commandments and will also have the gift of prophecy.

9. In Revelation 12:17, what additional two-point description did Jesus give of His end-time remnant church?

Answer:   It would keep all the Ten Commandments, including the seventh-day Sabbath of the fourth commandment (John 14:15 Revelation 22:14).  It also would have the “testimony of Jesus”, which the Bible tells us is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10).  (Study Guide 24 will give a full explanation of the gift of prophecy.)
So here are Jesus’ next two points of identification for His end-time remnant church:
3. It will keep God’s commandments, including His seventh-day Sabbath of the fourth commandment.
4. It will have the gift of prophecy.
Remember that while hosts of sincere Christian people are found in churches that do not keep the Sabbath or have the gift of prophecy, none of these churches can be God’s remnant end-time church into which Jesus is calling all last-day Christians, because God’s end-time church will both keep God’s commandments and have the gift of prophecy.

God's remnant must be preaching the three angels' messages worldwide.

God’s remnant must be preaching the three angels’ messages worldwide.

10. What final two points of identification for God’s remnant does the book of Revelation provide?

Answer:   The final two points of the six are: (5) It will be a worldwide missionary church (Revelation 14:6), and (6) It will be preaching the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14:6-14, which are briefly summarized below.
A. God’s judgment is in session. Worship Him! God’s end-time church must be preaching that the judgment began in 1844 (see Study Guides 18 and 19).  It also calls upon people to “worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Revelation 14:7. How do we worship God as Creator?  God wrote the answer in the fourth commandment. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8, 11. So the first angel’s message commands all to worship God as Creator by keeping holy His seventh-day Sabbath, which He gave to us as a memorial of Creation.
B.  Come out of the fallen churches of Babylon.
C. Don’t worship the beast or receive his mark, which is Sunday as a holy day.  Beware of all counterfeits.
Note: Here are the final two identification points:
5. God’s end-time church will be a worldwide missionary church.
6. It will be preaching and teaching the three-point message of Revelation 14:6-14.
Now let’s review the six points that Jesus gives us for identifying His end-time remnant church:
1. It would not exist as an official organization between A.D. 538 and 1798.
2. It would arise and do its work after 1798.
3. It would keep the Ten Commandments, including the seventh-day Sabbath of the fourth commandment.
4. It would have the gift of prophecy.
5. It would be a worldwide missionary church.
6. It would be teaching and preaching Jesus’ three-point message of Revelation 14:6-14.

Jesus promises that all who sincerely apply His six specifications will find His remnant church.

Jesus promises that all who sincerely apply His six specifications will find His remnant church.

11. Now that we have established Jesus’ six identification points for His end-time remnant church, what does Jesus tell us to do, and with what results?

Answer:   “Seek, and ye shall find.” Matthew 7:7. Jesus hands you these six specifications and says, “Go find my church.”  He promises that those who seek for heavenly things will find them.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only one that fits all six specifications.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only one that fits all six specifications.

12. How many churches fit these six specifications?

Answer:   Jesus gave such distinctive and specific specifications that they fit only one church.  Jesus did not give vague generalities such as “There will be many good people in my church” and “There will also be some hypocrites.” How many churches would those two points fit? All of them.
Those two points also fit the corner grocery store and downtown civic clubs. They would fit everything, and thus mean nothing.  Instead, Jesus gave such pointed, specific, highly descriptive points that they fit one church and only one church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  Let’s double-check the specifications.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church:
1. Did not exist as an official organization between A.D. 538 and 1798.
2. Arose after 1798. It began to form in the early 1840s.
3. Keeps the Ten Commandments, including the fourth – God’s holy seventh-day Sabbath.
4. Has the gift of prophecy.
5. Is a worldwide missionary church, working in 208 of the 236 countries of the world.
6. Teaches and preaches Jesus’ great three-point message of Revelation 14:6-14.
Jesus asks you to take these six specifications and check for yourself. It is easy. You cannot miss.
Note: Please remember that there are many loving Christians in churches which these points do not fit, but no such church can be God’s end-time remnant into which He is calling all His people for today.

13. After one of Jesus’ children heeds His loving warning call and comes out of Babylon (Revelation 18:2, 4), what does Jesus ask him to do next?

“Ye are called in one body.” Colossians 3:15. “He [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church.” Colossians 1:18.

Answer:   The Bible says that God’s people are called into one body, or church.  Jesus asks those who leave Babylon to join the remnant church–of which He is the head.  Jesus said, “Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold.” John 10:16. He also calls them “my people” in both the Old Testament (Isaiah 58:1) and the New Testament (Revelation 18:4). Of His sheep outside His fold (church), He says, “Them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” “My sheep hear my voice, … and they follow me.” John 10:16, 27.

When God calls people out of Babylon, He asks them to join His remnant church. People join His remnant church by baptism.

When God calls people out of Babylon, He asks them to join His remnant church. People join His remnant church by baptism.

14. How does one enter that body, or church?

“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles.” 1 Corinthians 12:13.

Answer:   We enter Jesus’ end-time remnant church by baptism.  (See Study Guide 9 for details on baptism.)

15. Does the Bible provide other evidence that Jesus has only one remnant church into which He is calling all of His people?

Answer:   Yes, it does. Let’s review it:
A. The Bible says there is only one true body, or church (Ephesians 4:4 Colossians 1:18).
B. The Bible says our day is like Noah’s day (Luke 17:26, 27).  How many ways of escape were there in Noah’s day?  Only one, the ark.  Once again, today, God has provided only one boat, or church, that will take His people safely through to His heavenly kingdom.  Be sure to get on the right boat!  The Bible says, “The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” Acts 2:47.  It was true in apostolic times it is still true today.

God promises that His remnant church will triumph gloriously.

God promises that His remnant church will triumph gloriously.

16. What is the good news regarding God’s remnant church?

Answer:
A. Its central theme is “the everlasting gospel” of righteousness by faith in Jesus only (Revelation 14:6).
B. It is built on Jesus, the Rock (1 Corinthians 3:11; 10:4), and “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18.
C. Jesus died for His church (Ephesians 5:25).
D. Jesus describes His remnant church so plainly that it’s easy to identify.  He also describes the fallen churches and calls His people out of them. Satan will trap only those who keep their eyes and hearts shut.
E. Its doctrines are all true (1 Timothy 3:15).

17. What is the good news regarding God’s remnant people?

Answer:   They will:
A. Be saved in His heavenly kingdom (Revelation 15:2).
B. Overcome the devil by the “power” and “blood” of Jesus (Revelation 12:10, 11).
C. Be patient (Revelation 14:12).
D. Have Jesus’ faith (Revelation 14:12).
E. Find glorious freedom (John 8:31, 32).

18. Earth’s hour is very late. Jesus’ second coming immediately follows the giving of the three angels’ messages (Revelation 14:12-14).  What is Jesus’ urgent plea now to His people?

“Come thou and all thy house into the ark.” Genesis 7:1.

Answer:   In Noah’s day, only eight people (including Noah himself) heeded God’s invitation.  Jesus is waiting at the door of His end-time ark, or remnant church, for you.
Note: This is our eighth Study Guide in the thrilling series on the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14:6-14.  The final Study Guide of the series will discuss the gift of prophecy.

19. I am willing to heed Jesus’ call to come into the safety of His end-time remnant church.
