A Great Religious Awakening.

27 Jan

A great religious awakening under the proclamation of Christ’s
soon coming, is foretold in the prophecy of the first angel’s message
of Revelation 14. An angel is seen flying “in the midst of
heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that
dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue,
and people.” “With a loud voice” he proclaims the message,
“Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment

is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the
sea, and the fountains of waters.”590
The fact that an angel is said to be the herald of this warning,
is significant. By the purity, the glory, and the power of the heavenly
messenger, divine wisdom has been pleased to represent the
exalted character of the work to be accomplished by the message,
and the power and glory that were to attend it. And the angel’s
flight “in the midst of heaven,” the “loud voice” with which
the warning is uttered, and its promulgation to all “that dwell
on the earth,”—“to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and
people,”—give evidence of the rapidity and world-wide extent
of the movement.
The message itself sheds light as to the time when this movement
is to take place. It is declared to be a part of the “everlasting
gospel;” and it announces the opening of the judgment. The [356]
message of salvation has been preached in all ages; but this
message is a part of the gospel which could be proclaimed only
in the last days, for only then would it be true that the hour
of judgment had come. The prophecies present a succession
of events leading down to the opening of the judgment. This
is especially true of the book of Daniel. But that part of his
prophecy which related to the last days, Daniel was bidden to
close up and seal “to the time of the end.” Not till we reach this
time could a message concerning the judgment be proclaimed,
based on a fulfilment of these prophecies. But at the time of the
end, says the prophet, “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge
shall be increased.”591
The apostle Paul warned the church not to look for the coming
of Christ in his day. “That day shall not come,” he says,
“except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be
revealed.”592 Not till after the great apostasy, and the long period

of the reign of the “man of sin,” can we look for the advent of
our Lord. The “man of sin,” which is also styled the “mystery of
iniquity,” the “son of perdition,” and “that wicked,” represents
the papacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its
supremacy for 1260 years. This period ended in 1798. The
coming of Christ could not take place before that time. Paul
covers with his caution the whole of the Christian dispensation
down to the year 1798. It is this side of that time that the message
of Christ’s second coming is to be proclaimed.
No such message has ever been given in past ages. Paul, as we
have seen, did not preach it; he pointed his brethren into the then
far-distant future for the coming of the Lord. The Reformers did
not proclaim it. Martin Luther placed the judgment about three
hundred years in the future from his day. But since 1798 the
book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the prophecies
has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of
[357] the judgment near.
Like the great Reformation of the sixteenth century, the Advent
Movement appeared in different countries of Christendom
at the same time. In both Europe and America, men of faith and
prayer were led to the study of the prophecies, and tracing down
the inspired record, they saw convincing evidence that the end
of all things was at hand. In different lands there were isolated
bodies of Christians who, solely by the study of the Scriptures,
arrived at the belief that the Saviour’s advent was near.
In 1821, three years after Miller had arrived at his exposition
of the prophecies pointing to the time of the judgment, Dr.
Joseph Wolff, “the missionary to the world,” began to proclaim
the Lord’s soon coming. Wolff was born in Germany, of Hebrew
parentage, his father being a Jewish rabbi. While very young, he
was convinced of the truth of the Christian religion. Of an active,
inquiring mind, he had been an eager listener to the conversations
that took place in his father’s house, as devout Hebrews daily
assembled to recount the hopes and anticipations of their people,

the glory of the coming Messiah, and the restoration of Israel.
One day hearing Jesus of Nazareth mentioned, the boy inquired
who He was. “A Jew of the greatest talent,” was the answer; “but
as He pretended to be the Messiah, the Jewish tribunal sentenced
Him to death.” “Why,” rejoined the questioner, “is Jerusalem destroyed,
and why are we in captivity?” “Alas, alas!” answered his
father, “because the Jews murdered the prophets.” The thought
was at once suggested to the child, “Perhaps Jesus was also a
prophet, and the Jews killed Him when He was innocent.”593 So
strong was this feeling, that though forbidden to enter a Christian
church, he would often linger outside to listen to the preaching.
When only seven years old, he was boasting to an aged Christian
neighbor of the future triumph of Israel at the advent of the
Messiah, when the old man said kindly, “Dear boy, I will tell you
who the real Messiah was: He was Jesus of Nazareth, … whom [358]
your ancestors have crucified, as they did the prophets of old. Go
home and read the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah, and you will be
convinced that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”594 Conviction at
once fastened upon him. He went home and read the scripture,
wondering to see how perfectly it had been fulfilled in Jesus of
Nazareth. Were the words of the Christian true? The boy asked
of his father an explanation of the prophecy, but was met with a
silence so stern that he never again dared to refer to the subject.
This, however, only increased his desire to know more of the
Christian religion.
The knowledge he sought was studiously kept from him in
his Jewish home; but when only eleven years old, he left his
father’s house, and went out into the world to gain for himself an
education, to choose his religion and his life-work. He found a
home for a time with kinsmen, but was soon driven from them
as an apostate, and alone and penniless he had to make his own
way among strangers. He went from place to place, studying dili-

gently, and maintaining himself by teaching Hebrew. Through
the influence of a Catholic instructor, he was led to accept the
Romish faith, and formed the purpose of becoming a missionary
to his own people. With this object he went, a few years later,
to pursue his studies in the College of the Propaganda at Rome.
Here his habit of independent thought and candid speech brought
upon him the imputation of heresy. He openly attacked the abuses
of the church, and urged the necessity of reform. Though at first
treated with special favor by the papal dignitaries, he was after a
time removed from Rome. Under the surveillance of the church
he went from place to place, until it became evident that he could
never be brought to submit to the bondage of Romanism. He was
declared to be incorrigible, and was left at liberty to go where
he pleased. He now made his way to England, and professing
the Protestant faith, united with the English Church. After two
[359] years’ study he set out, in 1821, upon his mission. While Wolff
accepted the great truth of Christ’s first advent as “a man of
sorrows, and acquainted with grief,” he saw that the prophecies
bring to view with equal clearness His second advent with power
and glory. And while he sought to lead his people to Jesus of
Nazareth as the Promised One, and to point them to His first
coming in humiliation as a sacrifice for the sins of men, he taught
them also of His second coming as a king and deliverer.
“Jesus of Nazareth, the true Messiah,” he said, “whose hands
and feet were pierced, who was brought like a lamb to the slaughter,
who was the Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, who
after the scepter was taken from Judah, and the legislative power
from between his feet, came the first time; shall come the
second time in the clouds of heaven, and with the trump of the
Archangel,”595 “and shall stand upon the Mount of Olives; and
that dominion, once consigned to Adam over the creation, and
forfeited by him (Gen. 1:26; 3:17), shall be given to Jesus. He

shall be king over all the earth. The groanings and lamentations
of the creation shall cease, but songs of praises and thanksgivings
shall be heard…. When Jesus comes in the glory of His Father,
with the holy angels, … the dead believers shall rise first. 1 Thess.
4:16; 1 Cor. 15: 23. This is what we Christians call the first
resurrection. Then the animal kingdom shall change its nature
(Isa. 11:6-9), and be subdued unto Jesus. Psalm 8. Universal
peace shall prevail.”596 “The Lord again shall look down upon
the earth, and say, ‘Behold, it is very good.’ ”597
Wolff believed the coming of the Lord to be at hand, his
interpretation of the prophetic periods placing the great consummation
within a very few years of the time pointed out by Miller.
To those who urged from the scripture, “Of that day and hour
knoweth no man,” that men are to know nothing concerning the
nearness of the advent, Wolff replied: “Did our Lord say that that
day and hour should never be known? Did He not give us signs
of the times, in order that we may know at least the approach [360]
of His coming, as one knows the approach of the summer by
the fig-tree putting forth its leaves? Matt. 24:32. Are we never
to know that period, whilst He Himself exhorteth us not only to
read Daniel the prophet, but to understand it? and in that very
Daniel, where it is said that the words were shut up to the time
of the end (which was the case in his time), and that ‘many shall
run to and fro’ (a Hebrew expression for observing and thinking
upon the time), ‘and knowledge’ (regarding that time) ‘shall be
increased.’ Dan. 12:4. Besides this, our Lord does not intend to
say by this, that the approach of the time shall not be known,
but that the exact ‘day and hour knoweth no man.’ Enough, He
does say, shall be known by the signs of the times, to induce us
to prepare for His coming, as Noah prepared the ark.”598

preting, the Scriptures, Wolff wrote: “The greater part of the
Christian church have swerved from the plain sense of Scripture,
and have turned to the phantomizing system of the Buddhists,
who believe that the future happiness of mankind will consist
in moving about in the air, and suppose that when they are
reading Jews, they must understand Gentiles; and when they
read Jerusalem, they must understand the church; and if it is
said earth, it means sky; and for the coming of the Lord they
must understand the progress of the missionary societies; and
going up to the mountain of the Lord’s house, signifies a grand
class-meeting of Methodists.”599
During the twenty-four years from 1821 to 1845, Wolff traveled
extensively: in Africa, visiting Egypt and Abyssinia; in
Asia, traversing Palestine, Syria, Persia, Bokhara, and India. He
also visited the United States, on the journey thither preaching
on the island of St. Helena. He arrived in New York in August,
1837; and after speaking in that city, he preached in Philadelphia
and Baltimore, and finally proceeded to Washington. Here, he
says, “on a motion brought forward by the ex-president, John
[361] Quincy Adams, in one of the houses of Congress, the House
unanimously granted to me the use of the Congress Hall for
a lecture, which I delivered on a Saturday, honored with the
presence of all the members of Congress, and also of the bishop
of Virginia, and of the clergy and citizens of Washington. The
same honor was granted to me by the members of the government
of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in whose presence I delivered
lectures on my researches in Asia, and also on the personal reign
of Jesus Christ.”600
Dr. Wolff traveled in the most barbarous countries, without
the protection of any European authority, enduring many hardships,
and surrounded with countless perils. He was bastinadoed
and starved, sold as a slave, and three times condemned to death.

He was beset by robbers, and sometimes nearly perished from
thirst. Once he was stripped of all that he possessed, and left to
travel hundreds of miles on foot through the mountains, the snow
beating in his face, and his naked feet benumbed by contact with
the frozen ground.
When warned against going unarmed among savage and hostile
tribes, he declared himself “provided with arms,”—“prayer,
zeal for Christ, and confidence in His help.” “I am also,” he said,
“provided with the love of God and my neighbor in my heart, and
the Bible is in my hand.”601 The Bible in Hebrew and English he
carried with him wherever he went. Of one of his later journeys
he says, “I … kept the Bible open in my hand. I felt my power
was in the book, and that its might would sustain me.”602
Thus he persevered in his labors until the message of the
judgment had been carried to a large part of the habitable globe.
Among Jews, Turks, Parsees, Hindoos, and many other nationalities
and races, he distributed the word of God in these various
tongues, and everywhere heralded the approaching reign of the
Messiah.
In his travels in Bokhara he found the doctrine of the Lord’s
soon coming held by a remote and isolated people. The Arabs [362]
of Yemen, he says, “are in possession of a book called ‘Seera,’
which gives notice of the second coming of Christ and His reign
in glory; and they expect great events to take place in the year
1840.”603 “In Yemen … I spent six days with the children of
Rechab. They drink no wine, plant no vineyard, sow no seed,
and live in tents, and remember good old Jonadab, the son of
Rechab; and I found in their company children of Israel, of the
tribe of Dan, … who expect, with the children of Rechab, the
speedy arrival of the Messiah in the clouds of heaven.”604

A similar belief was found by another missionary to exist in
Tartary. A Tartar priest put the question to the missionary, as to
when Christ would come the second time. When the missionary
answered that he knew nothing about it, the priest seemed greatly
surprised at such ignorance in one who professed to be a Bible
teacher, and stated his own belief, founded on prophecy, that
Christ would come about 1844.
As early as 1826 the advent message began to be preached in
England. The movement here did not take so definite a form as in
America; the exact time of the advent was not so generally taught,
but the great truth of Christ’s soon coming in power and glory was
extensively proclaimed. And this not among the dissenters and
non-conformists only. Mourant Brock, an English writer, states
that about seven hundred ministers of the Church of England
were engaged in preaching this “gospel of the kingdom.” The
message pointing to 1844 as the time of the Lord’s coming was
also given in Great Britain. Advent publications from the United
States were widely circulated. Books and journals were republished
in England. And in 1842, Robert Winter, an Englishman
by birth, who had received the advent faith in America, returned
to his native country to herald the coming of the Lord. Many
united with him in the work, and the message of the judgment
[363] was proclaimed in various parts of England.
In South America, in the midst of barbarism and priestcraft,
Lacunza, a Spaniard and a Jesuit, found his way to the Scriptures,
and thus received the truth of Christ’s speedy return. Impelled to
give the warning, yet desiring to escape the censures of Rome,
he published his views under the assumed name of “Rabbi Ben-
Israel,” representing himself as a converted Jew. Lacunza lived
in the eighteenth century, but it was about 1825 that his book,
having found its way to London, was translated into the English
language. Its publication served to deepen the interest already
awakening in England in the subject of the second advent.
In Germany the doctrine had been taught in the eighteenth
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 377
century by Bengel, a minister in the Lutheran Church, and a
celebrated biblical scholar and critic. Upon completing his education,
Bengel had “devoted himself to the study of theology,
to which the grave and religious tone of his mind, deepened
and strengthened by his early training and discipline, naturally
inclined him. Like other young men of thoughtful character,
before and since, he had to struggle with doubts and difficulties
of a religious nature, and he alludes, with much feeling, to the
‘many arrows which pierced his poor heart, and made his youth
hard to bear.’ ”605 Becoming a member of the consistory of
Würtemberg, he advocated the cause of religious liberty. “While
maintaining the rights and privileges of the church, he was an
advocate for all reasonable freedom being accorded to those who
felt themselves bound, on grounds of conscience, to withdraw
from her communion.”606 The good effects of this policy are still
felt in his native province.
It was while preparing a sermon from Revelation 21 for “Advent
Sunday” that the light of Christ’s second coming broke in
upon Bengel’s mind. The prophecies of the Revelation unfolded
to his understanding as never before. Overwhelmed with a sense
of the stupendous importance and surpassing glory of the scenes
presented by the prophet, he was forced to turn for a time from
the contemplation of the subject. In the pulpit it again presented [364]
itself to him with all its vividness and power. From that time he
devoted himself to the study of the prophecies, especially those
of the Apocalypse, and soon arrived at the belief that they pointed
to the coming of Christ as near. The date which he fixed upon as
the time of the second advent was within a very few years of that
afterward held by Miller.
Bengel’s writings have been spread throughout Christendom.
His views of prophecy were quite generally received in his own
state of Würtemberg, and to some extent in other parts of Ger-
605 Encyclopædia Britannica, art. Bengel (ninth edition).

many. The movement continued after his death, and the advent
message was heard in Germany at the same time that it was
attracting attention in other lands. At an early date some of the
believers went to Russia, and there formed colonies, and the faith
of Christ’s soon coming is still held by the German churches of
that country.
The light shone also in France and Switzerland. At Geneva,
where Farel and Calvin had spread the truths of the Reformation,
Gaussen preached the message of the second advent. While a student
at school, Gaussen had encountered that spirit of rationalism
which pervaded all Europe during the latter part of the eighteenth
and the opening of the nineteenth century; and when he entered
the ministry he was not only ignorant of true faith, but inclined to
skepticism. In his youth he had become interested in the study of
prophecy. After reading Rollin’s “Ancient History,” his attention
was called to the second chapter of Daniel, and he was struck
with the wonderful exactness with which the prophecy had been
fulfilled, as seen in the historian’s record. Here was a testimony
to the inspiration of the Scriptures, which served as an anchor
to him amid the perils of later years. He could not rest satisfied
with the teachings of rationalism, and in studying the Bible and
searching for clearer light he was, after a time, led to a positive
faith.
As he pursued his investigation of the prophecies, he arrived
at the belief that the coming of the Lord was at hand. Impressed
[365] with the solemnity and importance of this great truth, he desired
to bring it before the people; but the popular belief that the
prophecies of Daniel are mysteries and cannot be understood,
was a serious obstacle in his way. He finally determined—as
Farel had done before him in evangelizing Geneva—to begin
with the children, through whom he hoped to interest the parents.
“I desire this to be understood,” he afterward said, speaking
of his object in this undertaking, “it is not because of its small
importance, but on the contrary because of its great value, that I
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 379
wished to present it in this familiar form, and that I addressed it
to the children. I desired to be heard, and I feared that I would not
be if I addressed myself to the grown people first.” “I determined
therefore to go to the youngest. I gather an audience of children;
if the group enlarges, if it is seen that they listen, are pleased,
interested, that they understand and explain the subject, I am sure
to have a second circle soon, and in their turn, grown people will
see that it is worth their while to sit down and study. When this
is done, the cause is gained.”607
The effort was successful. As he addressed the children, older
persons came to listen. The galleries of his church were filled
with attentive hearers. Among them were men of rank and
learning, and strangers and foreigners visiting Geneva; and thus
the message was carried to other parts.
Encouraged by this success, Gaussen published his lessons,
with the hope of promoting the study of the prophetic books in
the churches of the French-speaking people. “To publish instruction
given to the children,” says Gaussen, “is to say to adults,
who too often neglect such books under the false pretense that
they are obscure, ‘How can they be obscure, since your children
understand them?’ ” “I had a great desire,” he adds, “to render a
knowledge of the prophecies popular in our flocks, if possible.”
“There is no study, indeed, which it seems to me answers the
needs of the time better.” “It is by this that we are to prepare for
the tribulation near at hand, and watch and wait for Jesus Christ.” [366]
Though one of the most distinguished and beloved of preachers
in the French language, Gaussen was after a time suspended
from the ministry, his principal offense being that instead of the
church’s catechism, a tame and rationalistic manual, almost destitute
of positive faith, he had used the Bible in giving instruction to
the youth. He afterward became teacher in a theological school,
while on Sunday he continued his work as catechist, addressing
607 Gaussen, L., “Daniel the Prophet,” Vol. II, Preface.
380 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
the children, and instructing them in the Scriptures. His works
on prophecy also excited much interest. From the professor’s
chair, through the press, and in his favorite occupation as teacher
of children, he continued for many years to exert an extensive
influence, and was instrumental in calling the attention of many
to the study of the prophecies which showed that the coming of
the Lord was near.
In Scandinavia also the advent message was proclaimed, and
a wide-spread interest was kindled. Many were roused from
their careless security, to confess and forsake their sins, and
seek pardon in the name of Christ. But the clergy of the state
church opposed the movement, and through their influence some
who preached the message were thrown into prison. In many
places where the preachers of the Lord’s soon coming were thus
silenced, God was pleased to send the message, in a miraculous
manner, through little children. As they were under age, the law
of the state could not restrain them, and they were permitted to
speak unmolested.
The movement was chiefly among the lower class, and it was
in the humble dwellings of the laborers that the people assembled
to hear the warning. The child-preachers themselves were
mostly poor cottagers. Some of them were not more than six or
eight years of age; and while their lives testified that they loved
the Saviour, and were trying to live in obedience to God’s holy
requirements, they ordinarily manifested only the intelligence
and ability usually seen in children of that age. When standing
before the people, however, it was evident that they were moved
[367] by an influence beyond their own natural gifts. Tone and manner
changed, and with solemn power they gave the warning of the
judgment, employing the very words of Scripture, “Fear God,
and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come.”
They reproved the sins of the people, not only condemning immorality
and vice, but rebuking worldliness and backsliding, and
warning their hearers to make haste to flee from the wrath to

come.
The people heard with trembling. The convicting Spirit of
God spoke to their hearts. Many were led to search the Scriptures
with new and deeper interest, the intemperate and immoral
were reformed, others abandoned their dishonest practices, and a
work was done so marked that even ministers of the state church
were forced to acknowledge that the hand of God was in the
movement.
It was God’s will that the tidings of the Saviour’s coming
should be given in the Scandinavian countries; and when the
voices of His servants were silenced, He put His Spirit upon the
children, that the work might be accomplished. When Jesus drew
near to Jerusalem attended by the rejoicing multitudes that, with
shouts of triumph and the waving of palm branches, heralded
Him as the Son of David, the jealous Pharisees called upon
Him to silence them; but Jesus answered that all this was in
fulfilment of prophecy, and if these should hold their peace, the
very stones would cry out. The people, intimidated by the threats
of the priests and rulers, ceased their joyful proclamation as they
entered the gates of Jerusalem; but the children in the temple
courts afterward took up the refrain, and waving their branches
of palm, they cried, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”608 When the
Pharisees, sorely displeased, said unto Him, “Hearest Thou what
these say?” Jesus answered, “Yea; have ye never read, Out of the
mouth of babes and sucklings Thou hast perfected praise?” As
God wrought through children at the time of Christ’s first advent,
so He wrought through them in giving the message of His second [368]
advent. God’s word must be fulfilled, that the proclamation of
the Saviour’s coming should be given to all peoples, tongues, and
nations.
To William Miller and his co-laborers it was given to preach
the warning in America. This country became the center of the
608 Matt. 21:8-16.
382 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
great Advent Movement. It was here that the prophecy of the
first angel’s message had its most direct fulfilment. The writings
of Miller and his associates were carried to distant lands. Wherever
missionaries had penetrated in all the world, were sent the
glad tidings of Christ’s speedy return. Far and wide spread the
message of the everlasting gospel, “Fear God, and give glory to
Him; for the hour of His judgment is come.”
The testimony of the prophecies which seemed to point to the
coming of Christ in the spring of 1844, took deep hold of the
minds of the people. As the message went from State to State,
there was everywhere awakened wide-spread interest. Many
were convinced that the arguments from the prophetic periods
were correct, and sacrificing their pride of opinion, they joyfully
received the truth. Some ministers laid aside their sectarian views
and feelings, left their salaries and their churches, and united in
proclaiming the coming of Jesus. There were comparatively few
ministers, however, who would accept this message; therefore
it was largely committed to humble laymen. Farmers left their
fields, mechanics their tools, traders their merchandise, professional
men their positions; and yet the number of workers was
small in comparison with the work to be accomplished. The
condition of an ungodly church and a world lying in wickedness,
burdened the souls of the true watchmen, and they willingly
endured toil, privation, and suffering, that they might call men
to repentance unto salvation. Though opposed by Satan, the
work went steadily forward, and the advent truth was accepted
[369] by many thousands.
Everywhere the searching testimony was heard, warning sinners,
both worldlings and church-members, to flee from the
wrath to come. Like John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ,
the preachers laid the axe at the root of the tree, and urged all
to bring forth fruit meet for repentance. Their stirring appeals
were in marked contrast to the assurances of peace and safety
that were heard from popular pulpits; and wherever the message
20. A Great Religious Awakening. 383
was given, it moved the people. The simple, direct testimony of
the Scriptures, set home by the power of the Holy Spirit, brought
a weight of conviction which few were able wholly to resist.
Professors of religion were roused from their false security. They
saw their backslidings, their worldliness and unbelief, their pride
and selfishness. Many sought the Lord with repentance and
humiliation. The affections that had so long clung to earthly
things they now fixed upon heaven. The Spirit of God rested
upon them, and with hearts softened and subdued they joined to
sound the cry, “Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of
His judgment is come.”
Sinners inquired with weeping, “What must I do to be saved?”
Those whose lives had been marked with dishonesty were anxious
to make restitution. All who found peace in Christ longed to
see others share the blessing. The hearts of parents were turned
to their children, and the hearts of children to their parents. The
barriers of pride and reserve were swept away. Heartfelt confessions
were made, and the members of the household labored for
the salvation of those who were nearest and dearest. Often was
heard the sound of earnest intercession. Everywhere were souls
in deep anguish, pleading with God. Many wrestled all night in
prayer for the assurance that their own sins were pardoned, or for
the conversion of their relatives or neighbors.
All classes flocked to the Adventist meetings. Rich and poor,
high and low, were, from various causes, anxious to hear for
themselves the doctrine of the second advent. The Lord held the
spirit of opposition in check while His servants explained the [370]
reasons of their faith. Sometimes the instrument was feeble; but
the Spirit of God gave power to His truth. The presence of holy
angels was felt in these assemblies, and many were daily added
to the believers. As the evidences of Christ’s soon coming were
repeated, vast crowds listened in breathless silence to the solemn
words. Heaven and earth seemed to approach each other. The
power of God was felt upon old and young and middle-aged.
384 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
Men sought their homes with praises upon their lips, and the glad
sound rang out upon the still night air. None who attended those
meetings can ever forget those scenes of deepest interest.
The proclamation of a definite time for Christ’s coming called
forth great opposition from many of all classes, from the minister
in the pulpit down to the most reckless, Heaven-daring sinner.
The words of prophecy were fulfilled: “There shall come in
the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying,
‘Where is the promise of His coming?’ for since the fathers fell
asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the
creation.”609 Many who professed to love the Saviour, declared
that they had no opposition to the doctrine of the second advent;
they merely objected to the definite time. But God’s all-seeing
eye read their hearts. They did not wish to hear of Christ’s
coming to judge the world in righteousness. They had been
unfaithful servants, their works would not bear the inspection
of the heart-searching God, and they feared to meet their Lord.
Like the Jews at the time of Christ’s first advent, they were not
prepared to welcome Jesus. They not only refused to listen to the
plain arguments from the Bible, but ridiculed those who were
looking for the Lord. Satan and his angels exulted, and flung the
taunt in the face of Christ and holy angels, that His professed
people had so little love for Him that they did not desire His
appearing.
“No man knoweth the day nor the hour,” was the argument
most often brought forward by rejecters of the advent faith. The
[371] scripture is, “Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not
the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”610 A clear and harmonious
explanation of this text was given by those who were
looking for the Lord, and the wrong use made of it by their
opponents was clearly shown. The words were spoken by Christ
in that memorable conversation with His disciples upon Olivet,
609 2 Peter 3:3, 4.

after He had for the last time departed from the temple. The
disciples had asked the question, “What shall be the sign of Thy
coming, and of the end of the world?” Jesus gave them signs,
and said, “When ye shall see all these things, know that it is
near, even at the doors.”611 One saying of the Saviour must not
be made to destroy another. Though no man knoweth the day
nor the hour of His coming, we are instructed and required to
know when it is near. We are further taught that to disregard His
warning, and refuse or neglect to know when His advent is near,
will be as fatal for us as it was for those who lived in the days of
Noah not to know when the flood was coming. And the parable
in the same chapter, contrasting the faithful and the unfaithful
servant, and giving the doom of him who said in his heart,
“My Lord delayeth His coming,” shows in what light Christ will
regard and reward those whom He finds watching, and teaching
His coming, and those denying it. “Watch therefore,” He says;
“blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when He cometh shall
find so doing.”612 “If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come
on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come
upon thee.”613
Paul speaks of a class to whom the Lord’s appearing will come
unawares. “The day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the
night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden
destruction cometh upon them, … and they shall not escape.” But
He adds, to those who have given heed to the Saviour’s warning,
“Ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake
you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of
the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.”614 [372]
Thus it was shown that Scripture gives no warrant for men to
remain in ignorance concerning the nearness of Christ’s coming.

386 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
But those who desired only an excuse to reject the truth closed
their ears to this explanation; and the words, “No man knoweth
the day nor the hour,” continued to be echoed by the bold scoffer,
and even by the professed minister of Christ. As the people
were roused, and began to inquire the way of salvation, religious
teachers stepped in between them and the truth, seeking to quiet
their fears by falsely interpreting the word of God. Unfaithful
watchmen united in the work of the great deceiver, crying, Peace,
peace, when God had not spoken peace. Like the Pharisees in
Christ’s day, many refused to enter the kingdom of heaven themselves,
and those who were entering in, they hindered. The blood
of these souls will be required at their hand.
The most humble and devoted in the churches were usually
the first to receive the message. Those who studied the Bible
for themselves could not but see the unscriptural character of the
popular views of prophecy; and wherever the people were not
controlled by the influence of the clergy, wherever they would
search the word of God for themselves, the advent doctrine
needed only to be compared with the Scriptures to establish its
divine authority.
Many were persecuted by their unbelieving brethren. In order
to retain their position in the church, some consented to be silent
in regard to their hope; but others felt that loyalty to God forbade
them thus to hide the truths which He had committed to their
trust. Not a few were cut off from the fellowship of the church
for no other reason than expressing their belief in the coming
of Christ. Very precious to those who bore this trial of their
faith were the words of the prophet, “Your brethren that hated
you, that cast you out for My name’s sake, said, Let the Lord
be glorified: but He shall appear to your joy, and they shall be
[373] ashamed.”615
Angels of God were watching with the deepest interest the
615 Isa. 66:5.

result of the warning. When there was a general rejection of the
message by the churches, angels turned away in sadness. But
there were many who had not yet been tested in regard to the
advent truth. Many were misled by husbands, wives, parents, or
children, and were made to believe it a sin even to listen to such
heresies as were taught by the Adventists. Angels were bidden
to keep faithful watch over these souls; for another light was yet
to shine upon them from the throne of God.
With unspeakable desire those who had received the message
watched for the coming of their Saviour. The time when they
expected to meet Him was at hand. They approached this hour
with a calm solemnity. They rested in sweet communion with
God, an earnest of the peace that was to be theirs in the bright
hereafter. None who experienced this hope and trust can forget
those precious hours of waiting. For some weeks preceding the
time, worldly business was for the most part laid aside. The
sincere believers carefully examined every thought and emotion
of their hearts as if upon their death-beds and in a few hours to
close their eyes upon earthly scenes. There was no making of
“ascension robes;”616 but all felt the need of internal evidence
that they were prepared to meet the Saviour; their white robes
were purity of soul,—characters cleansed from sin by the atoning
blood of Christ. Would that there was still with the professed people
of God the same spirit of heart-searching, the same earnest,
determined faith. Had they continued thus to humble themselves
before the Lord, and press their petitions at the mercy-seat, they
would be in possession of a far richer experience than they now
have. There is too little prayer, too little real conviction of sin,
and the lack of living faith leaves many destitute of the grace so
richly provided by our Redeemer.
God designed to prove His people. His hand covered a mistake
in the reckoning of the prophetic periods. Adventists did not [374]
616 See Appendix.
388 The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan
discover the error, nor was it discovered by the most learned of
their opponents. The latter said: “Your reckoning of the prophetic
periods is correct. Some great event is about to take place; but it
is not what Mr. Miller predicts; it is the conversion of the world,
and not the second advent of Christ.”617
The time of expectation passed, and Christ did not appear for
the deliverance of His people. Those who with sincere faith and
love had looked for their Saviour, experienced a bitter disappointment.
Yet the purposes of God were being accomplished:
He was testing the hearts of those who professed to be waiting
for His appearing. There were among them many who had been
actuated by no higher motive than fear. Their profession of faith
had not affected their hearts or their lives. When the expected
event failed to take place, these persons declared that they were
not disappointed; they had never believed that Christ would
come. They were among the first to ridicule the sorrow of the
true believers.
But Jesus and all the heavenly host looked with love and sympathy
upon the tried and faithful yet disappointed ones. Could
the veil separating the visible from the invisible world have been
swept back, angels would have been seen drawing near to these
steadfast souls, and shielding them from the shafts of Satan.

The Order of the Jesuits

17 Jan

Written by Charles Bedwell

The Catholic Church has been making stronger and more blatant moves at getting this world ready for that “Great Day of the Lord”.  But who exactly is their “Lord”? It is paramount for the Christian today to be able to clearly discern the many ways the Devil is using to prepare an unsuspecting world to accept the Mark of the Beast.  In order to have a full understanding of the Papacy’s modern movements and decisions, we MUST understand the role of The Jesuit Order and how the Papacy has been utilizing The Jesuit Order to covertly incorporate their schemes for many years.

Constitution of the Jesuits: “Let whoever desires to fight under the sacred banner of the Cross, and to serve only God and the Roman pontiff, His vicar on earth, after a solemn vow of perpetual chastity,- let him keep in mind that he is part of a society, instituted for the purpose of perfecting souls in life and in Christian doctrine, for the propagation of the faith …. Let all members know, and let it be not only at the beginning of their profession, but let them think over it daily as long as they live, that the society as a whole, and each of them, owes obedience to our most holy lord, the pope, and the other Roman pontiffs, his successors, and to fight with faithful obedience for God.”

Why was the Jesuit Order created?

The Jesuit Order, or The Society of Jesus, also called “Jesuits” today, was founded by a man named Ignatius of Loyola, born Ignatius of Loyolain 1491.  He maintained a military career as a Spanish knight until he was severely wounded at the Battle of Pamplona in 1521.  While he was in recovery, he supposedly went through some sort of “spiritual conversion”.  He then combined his military experience with his newfound religious conversion to decide that his religion needed “an army”.  Thus, he created The Society of Jesus under the banner of Roman Catholicism.  With several of his companions he formed the Jesuit Order in 1534 and it was officially commissioned and sanctioned by Pope Paul III in 1540.  Ignatius was also commissioned by the Pope to reorganize the “Bank of Rome” in 1540.  In its early stages, just after they were reorganizing the Bank of Rome, they began ruthlessly taking over Education.  Taking over the schools and the colleges would allow them access to change teachings.

The primary purpose of the newly-created Jesuit Order was to serve as the Pope’s deterant to the Protestant Reformation, which revealed the Roman Catholic Church as antichrist and the pope as that “man of sin” spoken of by the Apostle Paul. Their plan was to bring the entire world back to the Roman Catholic Church.

“I do declare from my heart, without mental reservation, that the Pope is Christ’s Vicar General and … He hath power to depose Heretical Kings, Princes, States … that they may safely be destroyed. Therefore, to the utmost of my power I will defend this doctrine … I do further declare the doctrine of the Church of England, of the Calvanists [sic], the Huguenots, and other Protestants to be damnable and those to be damned who will not forsake the same. I do further declare that I will help, assist, and advise all or any of His Holiness agents in any place wherever I shall be; and to do my utmost to extirpate [exterminate] the heretical Protestant doctrine, and to destroy all their pretended power.” (The Jesuit Oath, as taken from Political and Economic Handbook by Thomas Edward Watson in 1916, p. 437)

The Jesuit Order would become the Papacy’s Counter-Reformation.  The Reformation, started by reformed Catholics such as Martin Luther, began as a wave of truth in the 1500’s, calling out and exposing the abominable heresies of the Catholic Church.  It was mostly through the Papacy’s selling of “indulgences”, or certificates of pardon, that the Reformation was flamed to life.  Luther was outraged when members of the university were handing him these “requests for pardon of sin”.  He quickly told them that unless they actually repent of their sins, coming before the Throne of Grace for forgiveness, they would unfortunately perish in those sins.  He began teaching people that the grace of God cannot be purchased, that God’s grace is a FREE GIFT.  His opposition to Catholic doctrines began riling up the entire Catholic Order against him.

This should be a lesson to us as well:  When the Holy Spirit reveals great truth to us and calls us to spread the word to others, the enemy will stir up the powers of this world against us.  We must rely on God in these situations and not on our own wisdom.

The Jesuits’ Banking Scheme

The reorganized Bank of Rome began branching out and opening various offices in Europe.  Some of the banks they opened up: Venice (1587) The Wisselbank in Amsterdam (1609) Hamburg (1619) Nuremberg (1621) Rotterdam (1635) Bank of England (1694).

The Bank of England, having its model after the Bank of Rome and created by the Jesuits, actually became the world’s first Central Bank.  This central bank began the process of issuing “notes”, charging interest on the entire capital they loaned to the English Parliament.  This began a recurring debt for England, as there would be no way for them to fully repay their lenders, thus putting the power of the country of England into the hands of the Jesuits, who controlled the Central Bank.

Friends, it is for this very reason – the usury of the central bank in England – that the American Colonists sought freedom from England, and the reason for the Revolutionary War!

Ben Franklin“That is simple. In the Colonies, we issue our own paper money. It is called ‘Colonial Scrip.’ We issue it in proper proportion to make the goods and pass easily from the producers to the consumers. In this manner, creating ourselves our own paper money, we control its purchasing power and we have no interest to pay to no one.” (Ben Franklin speaking about the use of Colonial Scrip)

“The Colonies would gladly have borne the little tax on tea and other matters had it not been the poverty caused by the bad influence of the English bankers on the Parliament, which has caused in the Colonies hatred of England and the Revolutionary War.” (Ben Franklin speaking about the real cause of the Revolutionary War – banking control)

“The refusal of King George III to allow the colonies to operate an honest money system, which freed the ordinary man from the clutches of the money manipulators was probably the prime cause of the revolution.” (Ben Franklin on the corruption of the Bank of England)

The central banking system that exists in our world today is merely the same central banking system modeled after the original Bank of Rome, and the Jesuits control it, as they always have.

The Jesuits’ Influence on Modern Christianity

So many Christians today do not know where many of the most commonly accepted beliefs even came from, or why they were developed.  Throughout the dark ages, the Papacy resorted to very open and obvious brutal and cruel tactics of attempting to fully wipe out all Bible-believing “heretics”.  The development of the Protestant Reformation proved to the Papacy that these tactics would not suffice any longer, but would only more strongly affirm what the Reformers were illustrating – that the Catholic Church system IS the harlot church, the true Antichrist.

Brutal extinguishment would not work.  More subtle tactics were needed.  The prophecies unveiled in the book of Daniel fully confirm the Papacy as the Biblical Antichrist.  The Papacy needed to divert attention AWAY from them, to cause a curious world to look in many different directions, just not on them!  This is where the Jesuits would come in handy.

A MAJOR problem for the Papacy was the 1260-year identification time period in scripture, the “time, times, and dividing of a time” which denotes the time of the Papacy’s iron grip on the world.  A new “interpretation” of this 1260-year time period would need to be invented, AND a new Antichrist figure would also need to go along with the story as well.

Futurism

This brings us to Francisco Ribera (1537-1591) – a Jesuit leader in the area of Theology, who began writing a long expose or commentary, a few years before he died, on the events in the book of Revelation.  His documentary, In Sacrum Beati Ioannis Apostoli, & Evangelistiae Apocalypsin Commentarij, was published about a year before he died.  In his work, he explained that the first few chapters of Revelation actually referred to old Pagan Rome, and that the rest of Revelation described events circulating around a “literal” three and a half year period in the future where a charismatic Antichrist figure would be revealed who would:

– Persecute and kill the Christian saints during an oddly separated 70th week of Daniel’s 70-week prophecy

– Rebuild an actual third Temple in Jerusalem

– Deny the deity of Jesus Christ and claim to be the Messiah himself

– Place himself in this newly restored Jewish Temple, claiming to be God

– Kill an actual Two Witnesses of God in the city of Jerusalem

– Force the entire world to worship him

Ribera’s account of the events in Revelation successfully take the focus off of the Catholic Church, pointing toward the future, being a literal three and a half years at the very end.  How very convenient for the Papacy.  This interpretation would fully suspend ALL prophecies occurring in the middle ages.

There was also Manuel De Lacunza (1731-1801), a Jesuit priest who resided in Chile.  Around the year 1791, he put together a manuscript called La Venida del Mesias en Gloria y Magestad (“The Coming of the Messiah in Glory and Majesty”), where he took on the pen name of Juan Josafa (Rabbi) Ben-Ezra.  Using the typical Jesuit tactic of trickery and deceit, Lacunza used a Jewish name and title to completely hide the fact that he was a Catholic Jesuit priest, thus creating much more acceptance from Protestantism – who still slightly had a bad taste for the Papacy at the time.  In his work, Lacunza (Ben-Ezra) showed his advocacy for Futurism, proposing that the Antichrist was still to come in the future.

Edward Irving (1792-1834) was a Scottish Presbyterian who was very important in the movement of the propagation of Futurism.  This man was also the primary forerunner of both the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, two very prominent and popular movements in modern Christianity today.  Irving accepted the future one-man Antichrist theory and decided he would take the interpretation to NEW heights.  After a member, Margaret McDonald, of his very large congregation told him that she received “visions” of end time believers being “raptured” just before the time of the Antichrist, Irving began promoting the Futurist interpretation attached with a new twist of a “Secret Rapture”.  Whether or not Irving’s acceptance of the Rapture theory was directly due to McDonald’s supposed vision is up for some debate.  The fact is that shortly after McDonald sharing these visions with Irving, Irving began teaching a new Secret Rapture doctrine.

Through the work of Jesuits and Jesuit-influenced Protestants, Futurism has become the most commonly accepted theme of theory in relation to the Antichrist for modern Christianity.

Preterism

On top of Futurism, the Jesuits created an additional theory that would assist in taking the world’s eyes off of Satan’s entity, the Papacy.  Working in parallel was another interpretation, Preterism.  This theory was proposed by a Spanish Jesuit named Luis De Alcazar (1554-1613).  In his commentary titled Investigation of the Hidden Sense of the Apocalypse, he insisted that the ENTIRE book of Revelation pertained to pagan Rome and approximately the first six centuries of the Christian movement.  Here is a brief overview of Alcazar’s teachings in relation to the Antichrist:

– Rev chapters 1-11 relates to the rejection of the Jewish people and the Romans’ destruction of Jerusalem.

– Roman paganism was supposedly “the harlot” and was overthrown in Rev chapters 12-19.  Also, the true church in these accounts is supposedly the Roman Catholic Church.

– Rev 20 would hold the account that Caesar Nero (54-68 AD) would be the Antichrist and that he was judged.

– Rev 21 and 22 shows the glory of the Roman Catholic Church, that God establishes them as His church on earth.

The Papacy really has to love the Preterist theory even more than they do the Futurist theory, as it gives them even more glory and takes even more focus off of them.

With these popular theories, the REAL Antichrist has dominated and overcome modern Christianity.  They are either looking to the past or to the future, when the Antichrist has been here all along!

What does scripture say in relation to a future or past Antichrist?

1 John 4:2,3 ..”By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.”

2 Thessalonians 2:5-7 ..”Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.”

Both John and Paul say that the Antichrist, the mystery of lawlessness, was ALREADY at work and beginning in their time.  What about the temple of God being supposedly rebuilt in the end?  Does that stand up to scripture?

2 Thessalonians 2:3,4 ..”Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.”

Well, what is “the temple of God” today?

1 Corinthians 3:16,17 ..”Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.”

Additionally, what about a supposed “Secret” rapture of the saints?  Does scripture say that Jesus returns silently and secretly?

Matthew 24:30,31 ..”Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

Matthew 24:23-26 ..”Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

Revelation 19:11-16 ..”Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 ..”For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

Characteristics of Jesus’ return in the Bible:

– Heaven opens up, and Jesus emerges on a cloud with great power and glory, riding a white horse!

– The angelic armies of Heaven follow Him, also dressed magnificently in white and riding a white horse.

– Jesus descends upon the earth with a great shout, having also the voice of the archangel, and with a trumpet!

– Jesus’ eyes are like a flame of fire and He wears many crowns upon His head.

– He separates the saved from the wicked and finishes judgment upon the wicked.

– The righteous dead are then raised from the dead.  The righteous living are transformed and meet with them in the air, to forever be with the Lord.

– He even says that if anyone tries to teach you that He is returning silently or secretly – DO NOT believe them!

Question:  Do ANY of these events sound like “a secret rapture” to you?  The Jesuits have shrouded the truth with myths and fables, my friends.

The NIV and RSV

Does it matter which translation of the Bible you read?  I mean, surely picking the “easiest to read” version is okay, right?  Again, in today’s world, we have to be VERY careful about what information we subject ourselves to.  All throughout the Middle Ages and the Dark Ages, the Papacy has continuously sought to destroy the pure undefiled Word of God.  They knew that if people kept reading the true unaltered scriptures, the people would eventually be led by the Holy Spirit to clearly identifying the Papal system as the Antichrist.

You will hear many scoffers today try to insist that the scriptures of today are all completely corrupt, that it doesn’t matter which translation you pick – “Just pick the easiest one to understand and you’ll be fine.”

Even though the Original Text writings are no longer preserved today, the early Christians shortly after Christ made sure that they preserved and copied the pure writings while avoiding errors.

Over the course of an additional century of time, two different perspectives began emerging:

The Western Stream coming out of Alexandria and Rome, which incorporated many intentional and careless errors.

The Eastern Stream coming out of Syria and Constantinople, which kept fully accurate with the original teachings and writings of the apostles.

In the 4th Century, Eusebius of Caesarea, who was a follower of Origen, was commissioned by Emperor Constantine in 331 AD to begin copying 50 copies of the New Testament, otherwise known as “The 50 Bibles of Constantine.”  Of course, Eusebius chose to ignore the accurate Eastern manuscripts and kept to the grossly corrupted Western manuscripts to create these 50 copies.

Most scholars say that 2 of Eusebius’ Western stream-influenced copies, the Codex Sinaiticus and the Codex Vaticanus, came about as 2 of his 50 copies for Constantine.

Remember:  The true early Christians trained by the apostles completely rejected these false imposter manuscripts, which forced them to be hidden in secret places, later to be dug up and introduced as “ancient” artifacts and manuscripts.  Does a manuscript being “ancient” automatically make it accurate?  We have to be very cautious when we hear of recent archeological discoveries uncovering “ancient Biblical” script, which we have seen cases of in the last few years.

Even though many scribes tried to correct the many mistakes of the Western manuscripts, they were not able to get them even close to the pristine accuracy of the Eastern manuscripts.  Jerome, a Roman Catholic priest, still used the faulty Western manuscripts to serve as the foundation for the Latin Vulgate, which became the official Scripture of the Roman Catholic Church.  Conveniently, the Catholic Church erroneously declared the Latin Vulgate to be completely “free of any type of error” in the 16th Century at the Council of Trent.

This Council of Trent was convened in 1545 by the Papacy for the very means of finding a great way to stop the progression of Protestantism.

The Catholic Church would have loved nothing more than to use brute force to openly destroy every single true Bible as they had been doing beforehand.  However, their iron grip of forceful influence had already started losing its steam by this time, so they were forced yet again – to use subtle methods of deceit, their speciality.

Who would they ask to create some additional deceit?  The Jesuits.

The Jesuits actually controlled the direction of the Council of Trent.  Through their spokesman, the Archbishop of Reggio, they sought to completely reinstate the authority of the Church above the Word of God.  Read this part of the Archbishop’s speech on January 18, 1562 to also see something very interesting he states:

[col. 529] Such is the condition of the heretics of this age that on nothing do they rely more than that, under the pretense of the word of God, they overthrow the authority of the church; as though the church, His body, could be opposed to the word of Christ, or the head to the body. On the contrary, the authority of the church, then, is illustrated most clearly by the Scriptures; for while on the one hand she recommends them, declares them to be divine, [col. 530] offers them to us to be read, in doubtful matters explains them faithfully, and condemns whatever is contrary to them; on the other hand, the legal precepts in the Scriptures taught by the Lord have ceased by virtue of the same authority. The Sabbath, the most glorious day in the law, has been changed into the Lord’s day. Circumcision, enjoined upon Abraham and his seed under such threatening that he who had not been circumcised would be destroyed from among his people, has been so abrogated that the apostle asserts: “If ye be circumcised, ye have fallen from grace, and Christ shall profit you nothing.” These and other similar matters have not ceased by virtue of Christ’s teaching (for He says He has come to fulfill the law, not to destroy it), but they have been changed by the authority of the church. Indeed, if she should be removed (since there must be heresies), who would set forth truth, and confound the obstinacy of heretics? All things will be confused, and soon heresies condemned by her authority will spring up again. [See No. 1444.]

Not only was the Papacy able to elevate church tradition above the Scriptures, but he also convinced the council that “the Lord’s Day” (Sunday) should still be the official day of Christians!  Furthermore, the Jesuits pressed on, going to Douay and Rheims in France and had the Bible translated into the English language under the guise of the corrupt Latin Vulgate.  Corrupting God’s Word would allow them to corrupt the Christian faith.

With every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction.  Through God’s merciful guidance, the Reformers’ inspiration led to the completion of the King James Version of the Bible, which was completed in 1611.

The Devil could not allow the KJV to remain as the primary Bible for Christians, especially for the end times.  Thus, the Archbishop of Canterbury also began a revision of the KJV in the 1870s.  Two important Jesuit-inspired figures were the writers of this revision – Doctors Brooke Westcott and Fenton Hort.  These two men made sure than the translators of this new “revised” version completely avoided and ignored the correct Eastern manuscripts upon which the KJV was based, and they incorporated the ever-perverted Western ones, which had already been proven to remove the deity of Jesus Christ and supported the initiatives of the Papacy.

From this work, the Revised Version of 1881 was born!  At first, it merely attempted to rival the KJV.  However, by the mid-20th Century, the Revised Standard Version (RSV) became the most popular version in modern Christendom.  This effect saw the Jesuits’ hard work come to complete fruition!

Friends, for proper Bible study, avoid using any of these “newer” versions such as: – New International Version (NIV) – New English Bible  – New Life Version  – New Living Translation – The Message – New Century Version – Revised Standard Version (RSV) – Easy-To-Read Version

There are so many others to avoid, but these are just a few of the Jesuit creations.  If you truly want to keep closely to the REAL God-inspired text, PLEASE stick with the King James Version (KJV), I implore you.

Luke 8:11,12 …”Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.” …  The truth in God’s Word is a sharp two-edged sword.  The Papacy knows that if people are given the undefiled Bread of Life, it will lead them to be saved.  Briefly, I will show you only some shocking differences between the true KJV and the inaccuracies and heresies contained within just the NIV and the RSV.

Mark 13:14 ..”So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not. (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.”

Luke 4:4 ..”Jesus answered, It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.”Notice how “but by every word of God” is removed in NIV and RSV.

********************

John 1:10 ..”He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.”

The world was made BY Jesus, but the NIV and RSV change it to being made through Him.

NIV and RSV completely remove this verse in Matthew 18:11

Mark 13:14 ..”When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong-let the reader understand, then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.”

Of course the Jesuits don’t want you to study the book of Daniel, so they take that reference to Daniel out!

Luke 4:4 ..”And Jesus answered him, It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.”…

John 1:10 ..”He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not.”

Mark 13:14 ..”But when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.”

The list goes on and on, my friends.  These comparisons only barely scratch the surface as to how much the Jesuits have attempted to create corrupted, false versions of the Bible so that the world will remain in darkness.  Oddly enough, the very two things attacked the most in the false versions are: The Commandments of God and the deity/authority of our Lord Jesus.

Fact: These two versions above (NIV, RSV) remove and/or change 60,000 words from the true text!!  That would be equivalent to starting at Acts 1:1 and removing ALL of the scripture from that point through Revelation 22:21!

The Jesuits Pull the Strings of Politics

The Jesuits were created and commissioned nearly 500 years ago.  Since that time, not only have they corrupted the Christian faith and moved the world’s religions toward ecumenical unity, but they have also infiltrated the economic systems and political infrastructure of the countries of this world.  Through many of their agencies and societies spread worldwide, they have provided the Papacy with the convenience of directing and influencing this world’s major affairs.

Some of their agencies: – European Commission – Council on Foreign Relations – United Nations – Trilateral Commission – Bilderberg Group – The central banking systems – NATO  – the Freemasonry – Club of Rome

Since the Lateran Treaty was signed by Mussolini in 1929, the Vatican has actually been a fully sovereign state.  This of course began the “healing of the deadly wound”, spoken of by John in Revelation 13.

Especially since the Vatican’s noticeable increase in power, the Jesuits have been able to increase the frequency of their subtle tactics even in the realm of politics.

1. Through a Left vs. Right Hegelian dialectic philosophy, the Jesuits have been able to intuitively use a “create and control”/thesis and antithesis methodology.  They create a mirage for the people of the country by giving them Republican vs. Democrat/Conservative vs. Liberal  to choose from, when truly – they control BOTH parties.  Any person showing any true political opposition to the Jesuit-controlled duopoly is eventually extinguished by some of the Jesuits’ various outlets such as their mainstream media networks.

2. Through their various fascist-like internationalization projects, they’ve been able to gradually merge countries together in “unions”.  Some of their such unions which already exist are: Central American Union, European Union, African Union, South American Union, and Asian Union.  Other unions are still in the works, but are very close to being completed.  It is through disinformation and other forms of social engineering that the Jesuits coerce their hand.  If these methods do not work fully at first, then they implement more open attacks such as “war creation”.  If you notice, the United States still has a Constitution and the North American Union has not yet been completely realized.  What is the result?  The United States has been constantly at war for over 10 years.  This will continue until the United States is fully internationalized like Europe.

3. Through the Jesuits’ brother organization, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), they’ve been able to gain control of the entire money-making process, the Federal Reserve banking system.  Citibank, Bank of America, and Goldman Sachs are just three examples of their pawn elite banks.  They also flex their dominion through their International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Rockefeller Foundation, and many other such international societies.  In a nutshell, the Jesuits have complete control of the direction of every monetary currency in the modern world.  All the events you see circulating around the economies of various countries growing weaker is no accident.

Ties to Satanism

The rabbit hole really does go deeper and deeper.  It would take me many weeks to fully illustrate just how interconnected the Devil’s societies are in this world.  This entire article has merely touched on many of the key points.  One quick and clear connection can be made with all of the secret societies of this world which give allegiance to the Papacy – they are shrouded in occultic Satanism.

The Goat of Mendez, or Pan, or Baphomet in other cultures, is a symbol of fertility worship – also associated with Baal, the false sun god mentioned in the Old Testament.  Baphomet has also become a symbol of Satanic worship today.

Baphomet

Many of the societies I mentioned above, such as the Freemasons, are highly grounded in fertility false god worship and affiliation.  Many of the presidents, political leaders, prime ministers, celebrities, big corporate CEO’s, and other famous people are tied into different varieties of the occult.

Why would all of these people and so many more people be making such a distinct motion with their hands?  Are we to believe that all of these people are Texas Longhorn fans??  Not a chance.  The hand sign you see these people (in high places of power) invoking are all different forms of the Sigil of Baphomet, denoted by the original picture of Baphomet on the right above.  The Freemasonry themselves have been used by the Vatican to unite the powers of this world for some time and they are very much Satanic.

Take a look at this picture of a very interesting poster of Baphomet, from the Order of Eastern Templars:

– Notice the title, “Do What Thou Wilt”.  That is EXACTLY what Satan said to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

– You’ll see the all-seeing eye at the very top.  This symbol is also a Freemason symbol – a reference of the Masons to Solomon, where Solomon says “The eyes of the Lord are in every place…”  The Freemasons believe they should “keep an eye” on every place.  The reference to Solomon comes from the Freemasons’ desire to rebuild Solomon’s Temple, one of the evil ones that Solomon built for Molech after Solomon turned away from the Lord.

– There are two obelisks as well.  An obelisk itself represents “male fertility”, or the male phallus, and the ability to supposedly harness demonic power within the structure – very Satanic and pagan.  Obelisks are all over the world, most notably at the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica.

– Beside each obelisk, you’ll see the Baphomet Cross.  This cross can be seen all over Masonic Lodges and Temples, as well as on the attire of the 33rd Degree Masons.

– The six-pointed star, hexagram, can be seen at the bottom on the left – inside the 7-pointed object.  Many today believe that the “Star of David”, a six-pointed hexagram, came from David – but it did NOT.  That star used today by the Jews as a symbol of Israel has NOTHING to do with God or with David, but actually came from ancient forms of witchcraft, occultism, and sorcery.  Like other symbols in Freemasonry, the hexagram represents the fertility god – “the male triangle penetrating the female triangle”.  The hexagram was also used as a means of attempting to communicate with the dead in ancient Egypt.  However, if we read scripture we know that these sorcerers were not communicating with the dead, but with demons.  “The dead know nothing”. (Ecclesiastes 9:5)

We can see that the Catholic Church, through their manipulative Jesuit Order, has indeed acquired control of all the major facets of society – the world’s economics, politics, and religions.  There are still only a few cards left to be drawn, but in order for the Papacy to enforce the Mark of the Beast, it is necessary that she control the world under one unified system, and we are extremely close to this being fully implemented.

Does scripture indicate that the Harlot Church will control the world’s society in this way?

Revelation 18:2,3 …”And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.”

There is a lot of prophecy jam-packed into these 2 verses.  What does “wine” represent prophetically in scripture?  A covenant of accepting religious doctrine (Luke 5:37).

– “All nations have drunk of the wine (doctrine) of the wrath of her fornication” = The Whore of Babylon acquires religious control of the earth by getting everyone to accept the Church’s doctrine over the Law of God.

– “The kings of the earth have committed fornication with her” = The Whore of Babylon acquires political control of the earth by having the political leaders of this world give full allegiance to her.

– “The merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury” = The Whore of Babylon acquires economic control of the earth by maintaining positive control of the currency of the world.

In the Three Angels’ Message, are we given additional insight into this?  Notice above that the angel says that “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen”.  Mystery Babylon will fully acquire all three facets of society, but what is the primary reason that God’s wrath is finally poured upon the world?

Revelation 14:6-12 …”Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” And another angel followed, saying, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.”

Mystery Babylon, the Mother Harlot, forces the earth to accept her doctrines.  Then we are warned that if any person receives the mark, based upon what was just stated – the “wine of her wrath” – then that person will receive God’s final judgments and will be forever separated from Him, being destroyed in the lake of fire.  Amazingly enough, the last part of this great message is that those who do NOT receive the mark of the beast will be those who: Keep the Commandments of God and the Faith of Jesus!

Clearly, the message is that God’s wrath is ultimately poured out upon the world because of the world legislating Papal doctrine into law, forcing the world to disobey God’s Law!

Friends, this is why the Jesuits have been working secretly so hard over the years – to prepare this unsuspecting, docile world to be fully controlled by the Papacy again!  Take a good look around this world: Countries are quickly losing their sovereignty, moving toward a global system, which is encouraged by some of the Jesuit-controlled agencies such as the United Nations.  The economic stature of the most powerful countries in the world is preparing to collapse, which will usher in a global monetary system.  All the world’s religions are being convinced to “come together” through the merging ecumenical movement, and most of the professing Christians themselves even believe that God is on their side guiding this religious transition.  Oh how Satan has this world so fooled!  After reading this, where is your walk currently with our Lord Jesus?  Are you fully prepared to stand on that troublesome day soon ahead?  It is critically important for your salvation that you completely understand the Mark of the Beast and what it entails.  Scripture warns us that these exact events would happen and it illustrates the truth so that we don’t have to guess or speculate about this topic.

Baptized Paganism

Baptized Paganism
So new to the world, so unaware of the danger, the tiny newborn is secure, nestled in the warm cradle of his mother’s arms. Yet now he senses a strange tenseness in her body. Tightly, ever so tightly she clasps him to her breast as they approach the sacred grounds. He has never heard the rumble of so many voices or the mystical sounds of the chants. His mother’s arms have begun trembling and drops of tears mixed with sweat are dampening the swaddling cloth that covers him. Wild sounds of flutes and timbrels begin to echo down the mountain into the valley below. His mother’s grasp weakens and suddenly the large, strong hands of a man garbed in white lift him into the night air and lay him high upon a hard, metallic surface.
Insecure, the baby whimpers, seeking the comfort of his mother’s arms. His eyes are not yet strong enough to focus upon the large, bronze calf’s head above him. His whimpers turn into cries as smoke stings his eyes and the sculpted bronze hands supporting him become unbearably hot. His mother’s cries join his but are soon muffled by thundering of drums and the rhythmic shuffling of ten thousand feet. Suddenly he is pushed, and slides down the sloping arms into the fire below. He gives a painful shriek. His mother’s hysterical cries only add to the discordant shrillness of the flute and timbrels as the dance becomes more frenzied. When only the crackling of the fire and the mournful, lonely cries of the mother can be heard, the priest announces that the sun-god is pleased.
Throughout history the practice and horrors of sun worship have reached every region of the world. The Babylonians called the sun-god Shamash the Egyptians, Ra the Assyrians, Baal the Canaanites, Moloch the Persians, Mithras the Greeks, Helios the Druids, Hu and the Romans, Sol Invictus – the Unconquerable Sun. The list continues down through history and encompasses cultures as diverse as the Hindus, the Japanese, and the Aztecs and comes as close to home as virtually every Indian tribe in North America. Most scholars trace the beginnings of sun worship to Babylon.
Babylon, the first metropolis, was founded by Nimrod soon after the flood (Genesis 10:8-10). There were giants walking the earth in those days, ancient men of renown from the earlier world but as they slowly died, the new race seemed markedly inferior. Nimrod, however, retained all the physical and intellectual earmarks of his ancestors. At first Nimrod had been only a hunter but in the passing of time his escapades became the stuff of legend among his followers. less recitations of his mighty exploits elevated his status to superhuman proportions, and the rapidly expanding society at his feet finally began not only to honor him as their king, but to worship him as their god.
Nimrod’s arrogance was ultimately surpassed only by that of his wife, Semiramis. Notoriously beautiful and cunning beyond imagination, she wielded her own power with an iron hand. Like Nimrod, Semiramis was deified by the common people. To the superstitious minds of a race that had separated itself from worship of the one true God, Nimrod and Semiramis in their terrible strength and beauty were exalted as the sun and moon in human form.
Though historical accounts of Nimrod’s actual death are vague, it is certain that he left Semiramis with a large dominion and an equally large dilemma. How was she to maintain her hold on the empire he had built? There was but one solution, and she pursued it with diabolical zeal. Nimrod’s spirit had ascended into the sun itself, she claimed. With breathtaking eloquence she described to the people his new and elevated role as their benefactor and protector. Each morning he would rise, bringing light and life to the land as he traveled across the sky. In the evening he would plunge below the edge of the earth to battle the subterranean evil spirits and demons that would otherwise crawl over and annihilate mankind. At times the battle would be bloody, and the red-streaked sky bore witness to the fray. Each morning the people were to lay their offerings before the rising sun and worship it as their departed leader and victorious protector.  The plan was only too successful. In their self-imposed isolation from the worship of the living God, Nimrod’s followers had also forfeited the only living link with the knowledge of their ancestors. Left with nothing but their physical senses to inform them, they readily accepted the preposterous fabrications of Semiramis. Unbeknownst to them, they had become pawns in the sinister plan of Satan, the archdeceiver, as he laid the common foundation for every heresy of paganism.
It was decided that the first day of the week would thenceforth be dedicated to the worship of the sun-god, and in like manner the rest of the weekdays would be dedicated to worship of the lesser heavenly bodies. Remarkable enough, though Mithraism later reshuffled the order of several, our own weekdays today retain the Teutonic names of these same planetary deities. The first day of the week remains Sunday Monday commemorates the moon Tuesday, the planet Mars (Tiu) Wednesday, Mercury (Woden) Thursday, Jupiter (Thor) Friday, Venus (Frigg or Freya) and Saturday is obviously named for Saturn.
As generations passed, religious leaders began to add doctrines and ceremonies to sun worship. They declared that if the sun gave life, it must require life in order to strengthen it in its journey across the sky. In response, hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children were sacrificed to the sun-god. Of such worship. God declared through Moses, “Every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods: for even their sons and daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.” Deuteronomy 12:31. Deceived by self- serving leaders and knowing no other religion than their own, the people blindly adhered to the doctrines of devils.
One spring not many years following Nimrod’s death, the voluptuous Semiramis was found to be with child. Calling the scribes of Babylon together, she issued a most remarkable press release. Nimrod had impregnated her, she claimed, through the lively rays of the sun. As the offspring of the sun-god, the anticipated child would itself lay claim to deity, and by proxy, she, Semiramis, would henceforth be the “mother of god.” Such blasphemy seems transparent in our day, but to a nation that had departed from the living God the absurd became commonplace. The superstition of the masses was fertile ground for Satan’s deceptive schemes and like noxious weeds, they flourished.
On December 25 Tammuz, the child of the sun-god, was born. His birth was hailed as a great miracle. Falling as it did during the slowly lengthening days immediately after the winter solstice, it was also seen as an omen of the sun’s rebirth and was heralded by tumultuous rejoicing. December 25 was thereafter observed as the birthday of the son of the sun-god, and became a yearly feast day throughout the kingdom.
Like his supposed father Nimrod, Tammuz was reputed to have been a great hunter. Perhaps his greatest conquest of all, however, was his mythical union with Ishtar, the mother goddess who embodied all the reproductive energies of nature. Also variously regarded as the moon goddess and the queen of heaven, Ishtar was the principal female deity of the Assyrians. This same goddess, with certain variations, can be identified in other cultures as Ashtoreth (Phoenecian), Astarte (Greek and Roman), Eostre (Teutonic), and Eastre (Saxon). Her counterpart in Egypt was Isis, wife and sister of Osiris and mother of Horus. Rabbits and eggs were both symbols of life and fecundity that early came to be identified with Ishtar. The yearly celebration honoring her took place around the first full moon after the spring equinox, when all of nature seemed to be bursting with reproductive vitality.
Unfortunately, the youthful Tammuz (also known as Adonis, meaning “lord,” in classical mythology) met an untimely death at the tusk of a wild boar. Here legend overtakes history altogether. Some accounts say that after three days Tammuz miraculously resurrected himself others say that the grief-stricken Ishtar journeyed far into the netherworld to find him. After many days she succeeded, but during her absence the passion of love ceased to operate and all of life on earth languished in mourning. By all accounts, when the lamenting was over, Tammuz was firmly ensconced as the new god of the sun, and his renown eventually exceeded even Nimrod’s.
Every year following Tammuz’ tragic death and presumed ascension to the sun, the forty days preceding Ishtar’s festival were set aside for fasting and self-affliction to commemorate his suffering and death. (It was this practice, “weeping for Tammuz,” that God called an abomination in Ezekiel 8:13, 14.) At the end of this period of mourning the people would waken early on the first day of the week and travel to the highest hills near their homes. There they would present their offerings of wine, meat, and incense and prostrate themselves before the rising sun, exclaiming “Our lord is risen!” Then would commence the festivities of Ishtar, queen of heaven and goddess of fertility. In preparation for this high celebration, the people would make small cakes, inscribing them with a cross (a pagan fertility symbol), for baking in the sun and eating as part of their ritual. The day would conclude in orgiastic revelry of a most debasing sort, and often included human sacrifices.
The practice of these ancient perversions was so widespread that even the nation of Israel, a people sanctified by worship of the one true God, did not escape their baleful influence. Ever compromising with their pagan neighbors, the Jews allowed their own pure worship to be adulterated with one heathen custom after another until at a last it was almost wholly corrupt. In Jeremiah 7:17-19, the prophet revealed God’s clear displeasure at the idolatry of His people. “Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto their gods, that they may provoke me to anger. Do they provoke me to anger? saith the Lord: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces?”
Indeed, confusion was the inevitable result of every compromise by God’s people with the ways of the unsanctified world. And confusion was the legacy left to the generations who came after.
It may be unsettling to learn that virtually every religious holiday now observed throughout Christendom originated in paganism, many hundreds of years before Christ, but ancient history proves it beyond a doubt. The birthday of the sun’s child, Tammuz, became the alleged birthday of the Christ child. The season of mourning for Tammuz became Lent, and the resurrection legend of Tammuz conveniently lived on as the resurrection story of Christ. The cakes to the queen of heaven became hot cross buns, and the disgraceful fertility rites of Ishtar evolved into the celebration of Easter, (Incidentally, Easter is still a movable festival that finds its date each year from the cycles of the moon. It is always celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.)
Even the lesser pagan holy days, or “holidays,” were absorbed into Christian culture. During autumn, the season of decay, spirits of the dead were believed to be hovering nearby. If they were not prayed for and provided with adequate food and shelter, the people feared they would remain and haunt them with misfortune. In other words, trick or treat. Today we are left with All Soul’s Day the evening before is called Eve of All Hallows, or more commonly known as Halloween.
St. Valentine’s Day is what remains of Lupercalia, an early spring purification rite in which the priests would run through the streets with whips made from strips of goatskin. With these whips they would strike women, insuring them of fertility for the coming year. Matchmaking between young people would occur later in the day by random selection of names. The goatskin whips evolved into little arrows shot by Cupid, and matchmaking today occurs through the more purposeful exchange of Valentine cards.
Many other examples might be given, but suffice it to say that our religious and secular culture today is littered with pagan traditions, large and small. How did it happen? After all, we are a Christian nation in an enlightened age, aren’t we? The first question is probably easier to answer than the second.
Life was difficult at best during the early years of the Christian church. The pagan world was ruthless and powerful, and it sought to stamp out the little sect of worshipers who revered Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. But the blood of the martyrs proved to be the seed of the church, and as time passed it became clear that Christianity would prevail.
When Satan failed to destroy the church by violence, he resorted to a new strategy – he would join the church himself, and corrupt it from within. This prove to be a far more successful plan. By the fourth century A.D. the Roman Empire had invested the growing church with its own wealth and a large degree of political power, thinking to extend its own domain. Unfortunately for the world, this blend of religious and temporal power was an intoxicating mix that forever changed those who tasted it. No longer the meek and harmless body of Christ, the church devoured the hand that fed her, and in 538 A.D. Emperor Justinian decreed that the Roman Church now ruled the world. Henceforth, its reign would be known as the “Holy Roman Empire.”
The world staggered under the oppression of the Roman Church during the dark ages that followed. In her thirst for ever greater power and domination, she absorbed all other religions into herself and adulterated the pure doctrine of Christ with an amalgam of superstitions and heresies. This characteristic itself was typical of all the pagan nations, which by conquest perpetually added to their list of deities. Says Durant in The Story of Civilization: “There were gods who presided over every moment of a man’s life, gods of the house and garden, of food and drink, of health and sickness.” The Roman Church gathered these gods into her bosom and gave them saints’ names. Prayers for the dead, instead of ascending to Cybele were now offered up to the Virgin Mary. The use of idols and amulets was preserved, as were offerings of appeasement (penance and indulgences). The pagan kings were believed to be incarnations of the sun-god, and the Roman Church had its counterpart in the pope as the vicar of Christ.
The earliest Christians had denied all compromise with false doctrine and had gladly suffered horrible martyrdoms for refusing even to place a pinch of incense at the feet of pagan altars. Yet in just a few generations of time, a curtain of moral blackness shrouded the church. Ever anxious to assimilate and conquer, she integrated virtually every feature of sun worship into her own rites. To spite the Jews whom they hated and to accommodate the legions of sun worshipers that were entering the “faith” through conquest, church leaders very early presumed to transfer the sanctity of the Sabbath to the first day of the week. Sunday was proclaimed a holiday in honor of Jesus’ resurrection, a cunning perversion that eventually brought scorn upon God’s great moral law, the Ten Commandments. In time this master stroke also effectively obliterated the worship of God as the literal Creator of the universe, which in turn prepared a wide path for the emergence of evolutionary philosophy, centuries later.
Today evolution is only the tip of a massive, many-headed iceberg. From the words we use down to the way we wear our clothes, our culture is thoroughly steeped in pagan traditions. Stripped of their original significance, however, many of these customs appear to be relatively harmless and some, updated with their Christian dressings, seem actually wholesome. But how should the Christian of today relate to Christmas, or Easter, or Sunday keeping? Not many people are really aware of the history of these things, so should we even be concerned?
These questions are reasonable, and they deserve thoughtful consideration. The best place to begin looking for answers is in the Bible itself. God strictly commanded Israel, Saying “Take heed to thyself . . . that thou enquire not after their gods, saying. How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God.” Deuteronomy 12:30, 31.
Why were God’s words so strong? Because He was utterly unlike the heathen deities, whom the people regarded as capricious and in need of continual appeasement. God Himself was just, loving, and above all, holy. He required a different, higher kind of worship, based on a holy relationship with His people. The very forms of sun worship and idolatry precluded any kind of relationship between God and His people, and degraded their conceptions of Him. Moreover, these forms encompassed the most debasing practices, including human sacrifices.
We must ask then, is there anything wrong with commemorating the birth and resurrection of Jesus? Of course not. These events are filled with deep meaning for every true Christian. The only problem is that neither the Bible nor history has preserved the dates of these events for us. Consequently, there is no biblical command to observe them on any particular day of the year. God in His wisdom left us free to remember them any and every day of the year, including December 25 and Easter Sunday.
At this point it should be evident that Heaven places no religious significance on Christmas or Easter. The selection of these days was based solely on pagan considerations men later contrived the means by which to incorporate them into the Christian religion. It is impossible simply to ignore the holidays that have become such a staple in our own culture, yet we should not invest them with a sacredness that they do not deserve. At least we may be thankful that these days to not seek to displace or nullify any part of God’s holy law.
But now how about Sunday keeping – isn’t that a legitimate commemoration of Christ’s resurrection? Ah – here is where Satan’s plot has been leading all along, Sunday observance is the fox that slipped into the chicken coop along with the pigeons. The pigeons may not be real chickens, but it’s the fox who will destroy the whole brood if he stays.
What in the world does this mean? In Romans 6, the Bible gives us the symbol of Christ’s death and resurrection for the Christian, and it isn’t Sunday keeping. It is baptism and a subsequent “walk in newness of life.” Verse 4. But most importantly, Sunday keeping is the one remnant of paganism that is placed in direct opposition to God’s authority. We have not been told merely to pick one day out of seven for worship. Rather, we are told that God specifically blessed the seventh day and made it holy – a fact we dare not disregard.
The Sabbath is a sacred memorial of the creative power which distinguishes God from all false deities. God has always required His people to put a difference between the sacred and the profane, between the holy and the common. Satan has unceasingly sought to blur this distinction. His final goal is to make sin appear righteous, and righteousness to appear profane. Has he succeeded? Look at modern Christianity and decide for yourself.
Nowhere in the Scriptures is any mention made of transferring the Sabbath’s sanctity to another day. Nowhere does the gospel of Christ nullify any portion of God’s law, though the gates of hell have raged against it. It was only by hiding the change within a mass of pagan ritual and “baptizing” the whole lot, that Satan succeeded in causing the entire Christian world to break God’s holy law while thinking to honor Him. Dr. Edward T. Hiscox, author of “The Baptist Manual,” made this candid admission before a group of ministers:

There was and is a commandment to keep holy the Sabbath day, but that Sabbath day was not Sunday. Earnestly desiring information on this subject, which I have studied for many years, I ask, where can the record of such a transaction [change of the Sabbath] be found? Not in the New Testament, absolutely not. There is no scriptural evidence of the change of the Sabbath institution from the seventh to the first day of the week. Of course I know quite well that Sunday did come into use in early Christian history. … But what a pity that it comes branded with the mark of paganism, and christened with the name of the sun god, when adopted and sanctioned by papal apostasy and bequeathed as a sacred legacy to Protestantism! (In a paper read before a New York Ministers’ Conference, November 13, 1893.)

There is a serpent hidden in the bundle of colorful customs handed to us from paganism. Satan well knows that sin is the only thing that can separate us from the joys of eternity with Christ, and thus he has laid his snare. Will we be taken in the net of our adversary? Or will our prayer, like David’s, be “Give me understanding and I shall keep thy law yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments, for therein do I delight”? Psalm 119:34, 35.

God’s Role for Women in Ministry

God’s Role for Women in Ministry
After reviewing hundreds of applications, a Fortune 500 company’s search for a new marketing director had been narrowed to just three candidates. The first person called for the final interview was asked just one simple question: “What is two plus two?” Surprised by the inquiry, she wondered if it was a trick question—but in the end, she answered “four.” The CEO thanked her for coming and ushered her out the door. The next candidate received the same question: “What is two plus two?” She thought about it for a moment and replied, “Statistically, it is the number between three and five.” Though more impressed with this answer, the CEO thanked her for coming and ushered her out the door. Finally, the last candidate to be interviewed was also asked, “What is two plus two?” Without pause, she replied, “What do you want it to be?” She was hired on the spot.
In today’s culture, when it comes to marketing, absolute truth is a rare commodity. Morals are more often determined by popularity or political correctness than by the simple truth. This is not how we should approach the Bible’s teachings, no matter how sensitive the lesson to be learned can be.
When you consider that more than 60 percent of all practicing Christians are women, this dynamic between truth and popularity can be especially volatile when exploring the subject of women’s ordination. The question of women’s roles in the church, and whether or not they ought to be pastors and elders, is under serious debate within many churches. Both sides of the argument stir strongly held beliefs—which is why I want to approach this topic not only with great caution but, more important, much prayer and humility.
Laying the Groundwork
A discussion about the Bible, men, and women in this culture leaves the door wide open to impassioned and often false interpretations of biblical lessons, so I want to lay out a foundation of how we should approach this issue together. We must each ask ourselves: What is my view of the Bible? Is it God’s Word, or is it just the thoughts of men? Does it contain errors, and if it does, can we decipher those errors from what is true?
For instance, many who advocate the position that the Bible sees no difference at all between men and women in the church and the family must often discard very pointed remarks from Paul’s letters, sometimes without any textual reason for doing so. Paul, they suggest, made an error—but on what basis do they come to that conclusion?
Another question each Christian must consider is this: If the Bible teaches something that I am uncomfortable with, will I still obey it? That is, are we as individuals the final arbiters of truth? If we consider that we are the authors of truth, we put ourselves on a dangerous path. As Christians, we must resist falling prey to our “instincts,” because the prevailing thoughts and value systems of the world can influence our thinking in unbiblical ways.
Indeed, the most fundamental basis for Christians is that Christ says if we love Him, we will obey Him. We must stand for the truth that God has shown us in His Word. That’s why I have written this booklet based on the following principles:

  1. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
  2. When God’s people have been unfaithful to Him, negative consequences follow.

With these ideals in mind, I firmly believe we can come to a biblical conclusion to just about any doctrinal disagreement between people who love God.

The Family and the Church
At the end of Creation week, God not only established the Sabbath (Genesis 2:18, 21–24) but also the family (Genesis 2:1–3). And in the last days, we will see Satan not only attacking those who remain faithful to the Sabbath, but he will also strike at man’s most intimate relationship—the family. In fact, this battle has already begun.
Any victory by the devil in the war against the family is ultimately reflected in the church. The very survival of both society and the church leans heavily upon the family unit. In this unit, seen not only in God’s Word but also His creation, we find a basic truth: Men are fathers, and women are mothers.
As we shall see later, men and women are without question equal as humans, but they are also entirely unique as creatures. They are not only distinct sexually, but almost every other aspect of their natures is different as well. I believe these differences should be apparent, maintained, and even emphasized in everything, from the way we walk and talk to the way we work and dress. Men should never try to be women, and women should never try to be men.      Now, I am not a male chauvinist. I wash dishes, change diapers, and make beds. In the 1970s, my mother was a leading voice in the women’s liberation movement (now called the feminist movement) in North America. Very articulate and outspoken, she even wrote an entire album of songs dedicated to women’s rights. And like her, I firmly believe that men and women should get equal pay for equal work.
My mother also left the movement because it turned into something else. She saw feminism becoming more about angry women who wanted to be like men rather than attaining the rightful respect for being a woman. And this is the feminism, albeit more refined, that is pushing its agenda into churches with a frightening degree of success today. Of course, I expect this influence in the world. However, when it seeps into the body of Christ disguised as an “improvement,” it often signals a very serious problem.
This movement in our church is partly the result of some Christians, who have an earnest desire to reach the world with the message of salvation, naively trying to increase their influence by adopting popular social philosophy. In an attempt to reverse the injustice against women throughout the ages, they have allowed the feminist movement to push the church beyond voting rights and equal pay into the arena of unisex thinking.
And by substituting a politically correct but biblically inaccurate social philosophy as their guide, they are inadvertently erasing any biblical distinction between men and women. Often when an organization seeks to correct some wrong policy, it overcorrects. I fear this is the case of the church, which has a valid need to create more avenues for women to use their gifts of ministry. However, this need is being translated by some into a problematic desire for women to be ordained as pastors and elders.
When Men Fail to Lead
I should hasten to say that the blame does not lie with just the liberal feminist movement. In fact, the brunt of the blame must fall on indifferent and even lazy men within the church. They are failing to fulfill their roles as strong, loving, and servant-oriented leaders. As a result, women are naturally stepping into the vacuum.
Yet Isaiah 3:1–12 offers a sobering thought about this scenario. “And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. … As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths” (emphasis supplied).
It appears that when men fail to lead as they should, women and children fill the void as a negative consequence. This often comes with bad results, as was the case with Queen Jezebel, who usurped her husband’s authority. (See 1 Kings 18, 19, and 21.) While in power, she severely persecuted God’s prophets. Not long after, her daughter Athaliah took the throne of Judah—a six-year reign marked by bloodshed and confusion (2 Kings 11:1–16).
The Christian author E.G. White wrote, “The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.”1
When men fulfill this mandate, when they are spiritually strong and obedient to God, we find an outpouring of blessings. But when men do not obey God and are not spiritually strong, whether they are weak, lazy, or cowardly, God responds in judgment by allowing an unnatural and unintended role reversal to take place.
We can take this to mean that God has clearly established men to be the rightful leaders in the home, church, and society. The word husband means “house-band,” because men are to be the head of the household and bind their families together in the love of Christ.
God’s Love Equal for Men and Women
We need to be clear about one thing before moving forward. The value of men and the value of women are perfectly equal in the eyes of God. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28, emphasis added). The spiritual standing of every human being, regardless of nationality, class, or gender, is the same. The ground at the foot of the cross is level—women matter as much as men. This is abundantly clear from the life and ministry of Jesus and the apostles.
For instance, Jesus taught women directly and was ministered to by them. “Now it came to pass … that He entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house.” (See Luke 10:38–42.) He was also supported financially by women (Luke 8:3), and women were among the first to accept the gospel (Acts 16:14, 15).
Yet the fact that men and women have equal rights and access to salvation does not negate the need for submission to leadership in the home or the church. Indeed, Jesus and the Father are equal, yet Jesus submits to the authority of the Father. “The head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God” (1 Corinthians 11:3).
Of course, men should be responsible leaders in our home and churches, firm if necessary but always kind. (Colossians 3:19 says, “Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.” In studying the phrase “be not bitter,” I found the idea to be that a man should not treat his wife harshly, because it will eventually make her bitter.)
Moreover, in America, “equal rights” does not negate the authority or leadership of society’s leaders. You have the same civil rights as a police officer, but you are expected to submit to their authority. Likewise, equality in salvation does not negate the God-established system of male leadership in the home and church. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right” (Ephesians 6:1, emphasis added).
It is true that for far too long, men have misunderstood the proper role of women in the church, often treating them as second-class Christians. Because of this, many gifted women have been left without an arena in which to use their gifts. Perhaps this is why many Christian women reacted to their unfair status by following the “prevailing winds” of the world, ultimately desiring things that God forbids.
The fact is that the pendulum of the role of women in the church has swung too far in both directions. But where humans have failed, God promises victory, peace, and restoration. That’s why both sides in this debate need to seek wisdom and guidance from God’s Word in order to grow in the unity of the faith.
Finally, in considering women’s roles in the church, remember also the broader idea of ministry itself. There are role distinctions in the church that are not in dispute. (See 1 Corinthians 12.) You don’t hear the argument that a man gifted in teaching is more valuable than a man gifted in encouragement. The nature of a body is that different members perform different roles, yet each member is equal in importance. Different does not mean better or worse.
So as we continue our study, please note that this booklet is not designed to be an exhaustive study on the subject of women’s ordination, neither will it deal with every single argument regarding women as pastors or elders. Rather, it is a simple presentation of “Thus saith the Lord,” which should always be our guide in determining the truth on any issue.
In The Beginning
Let’s begin with Creation. It can be said that God made creatures in the order of their value and complexity. First, He created the base elements of earth, water, and air; then, He made vegetation and light. Next, He made the birds and fish, and then land creatures.
Finally, God made a man and, as the concluding act of Creation, a woman. We can take this to mean that women are the most beautiful and complex creatures on the planet. They even tend to live longer than men and use more of their brains in concert.
Note, God did not create the first man and woman in the same way. He made the man from dust, but He made the woman out of the man (Genesis 2:21, 22). And while God named the man, it was the man who named the woman. “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man” (Genesis 2:23; see also Genesis 3:20). So God’s creation process itself suggests a very distinct difference between men and women.
Later, after sin entered the picture, God also established a system of authority to maintain harmony in the family, the church, and society. It is a system in which man would lead. “Unto the woman He said … thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee” (Genesis 3:16). The word rule means “to govern, or have dominion.”
It is important not to rush past this pivotal verse, as some have argued that the passages regarding man’s leadership role reflect the biases of a male-dominant culture. But notice that the command in Genesis 3:16 comes directly from God; it did not come from Moses, King David, Peter, John, or even Paul. It is God’s own voice speaking.
Likewise, it’s been said that we must disregard these passages because they were based on ancient eastern traditions that don’t apply today—after all, there were also laws regarding slavery and polygamy in Bible times. That’s certainly true, but God never directly commanded people to have slaves or multiple wives either. Rather, as Jesus said, it was because of “the hardness of your heart [that Moses] wrote you this precept” (Mark 10:5).
We also need to back up a little and understand that the supporting role of women was established before the fall. (See 1 Corinthians 11:7–9.) Eve was created to be Adam’s “help meet” (Genesis 2:18). Thus from the very dawn of Creation, the role of a woman is to support her husband.
Women In Church
Let’s now dive into a controversial but eye-opening passage that deals with women in a church setting. Paul writes, “I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarrelling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control” (1 Timothy 2:8–15).
Here we discover Paul advising the young Timothy on appropriate church life, offering practical guidelines for structuring the church and choosing its officers, with qualifications for each position.
Paul also addresses women’s attire, requesting that they avoid the appearance of worldliness by dressing modestly and focusing on propriety, because “ostentatious dress, in the ancient world, sometimes could signal a woman’s loose morals and independence from her husband.”2 Of course, these general teachings are widely accepted in principle by most churches, but what Paul writes next often causes a serious stir.
For women, Paul says, their role in worship is to “learn quietly with all submissiveness.” That is, within a worship gathering at the church, a woman should remain quiet. But what does he mean by quiet? Paul clarifies, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man.” So this isn’t an absolute quiet, but rather “quiet” in the sense clearly described—without teaching or exercising authority over men. This understanding is in complete agreement with Paul’s discussionin 1 Corinthians 11, which is a passage that demonstrates women participated in prayer and prophecy in the early church.
The Heart of the Matter
To understand this limitation on the ministry of women a little better, we need to clarify what the word teach actually means. First, it is clear this passage is in regard to spiritual matters within the church. The epistle itself is pastoral in nature, providing instructions for the church and appropriate conduct therein. Therefore, it doesn’t preclude women from occupations that require instruction of or authority over men outside the church structure.
But considering its usage throughout the Scriptures, the term teach is used “to denote the careful transmission of the tradition concerning Jesus Christ and the authoritative proclamation of God’s will to believers in light of that tradition.”3
Therefore, according to Paul, women are not to exert spiritual authority over men. This isn’t limited to the husband and wife relationship, but rather encompasses all male-female relationships in the church.
The same sentiment is echoed in 1?Corinthians 14:34,?35: “Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.” In this passage, Paul also tells the women of Corinth to learn in silence. (In this particular incidence, he is addressing the proper evaluation of prophecies.)
Many have argued that though Paul restricts women from teaching men, it was based entirely on cultural traditions that have no place today. However, although it certainly is important to understand the historical and cultural background of every Bible teaching, Paul simply does not leave room for us to disregard this passage in that manner.
Why? After giving the restriction, Paul gives a timeless reason for it. “For Adam was formed first, then Eve” (1?Timothy 2:12). Here Paul grounds his teaching directly to the creation of all things, implicitly stating that men and women were created differently and have different roles in the natural, pre-fall conditionof humanity. Therefore, there is no room to say this is a teaching for the Ephesians in their time and place in the world.
The reality is that Paul often writes about the roles and distinctions between men and women among other role distinctions. For example, in Ephesians 5 and 6, he calls on women to submit to their husbands and for servants to submit to their masters. Indeed, this passage follows another in which Paul talks about putting on the “new self” in Christ (Ephesians 4:23, 24). It is the newly converted man who understands the created order and is able to live in submission to God. Thus Paul never abolishes roles; rather, he explains that Christ has abolished any distinction with regard to spiritual position: We are each justified by faith alone and are equally granted the right to be children of God.
Not Just Women
Some suggest that because there are generally more women than men in the church, leadership roles should be divided according to those percentages. But by using this reasoning, it would follow that in a family with three children, kids would be entitled to the largest share of leadership!
On the contrary, authority in church does not come through a popular vote, but rather from the Word of God, which equates the spiritual authority of man over woman with the authority of Christ over man. (See 1 Corinthians 11:3.)
Furthermore, wives should willingly acknowledge the headship of their husbands. “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the Saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing” (Ephesians 5:23, 24). See also Titus 2:4, 5, and 1 Peter 3:6 for even more about a Bible-centered relationship.
Paul also says pointedly that elders are to be husbands; that is, men: “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2). (Note: The terms bishop and elder are interchangeable.) “[Paul] did not say that just any man could be a bishop, even as in the Old Testament not just any son of Aaron could be a priest. The office has always been limited. The Christian leader Paul spoke of must be ‘blameless’ and married, ‘vigilant, sober, of good behavior,’ etc. There is a long list of requirements that eventually eliminates most men and leaves only a very few eligible.”4 Women aren’t the only ones who are ineligible to be elders and pastors; so are most of the men!
Of course, every Christian, male and female, is called to minister in some capacity, but not in every capacity. “And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11, 12).
The Church Role of Women in the Bible
What then is the role of women in Christ’s church? The Bible is very clear that women ought to leap into ministry with both feet! Indeed, one of the greatest weaknesses in the church is the lack of women’s ministries truly focused on Christ and growth in the Word.
Plus, throughout the Bible, women are shown as equal in the nature of their ministry. Several examples include Deborah, who was a judge of Israel (Judges 4:4); Huldah and Anna, who were prophetesses (2 Chronicles 34:22; Luke 2:36); Priscilla, who was active in evangelism (Acts 18:26); and Pheobe, who was a deaconess (Romans 16:1).
Women also played a prominent role in the ministry of Jesus and ministry to Jesus (Matthew 28:1–10; Luke 8:3; 23:49; John 11:1–46; 12:1–8). Further, no spiritual gift is limited to men in the lists in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 12:27–31; Romans 12:3–8; 1 Peter 4:8–11), and women were commanded to edify the body of Christ, which included teaching (Titus 2:4) and prophecy (Acts 2:17, 18; 21:9; 1 Corinthians 11:5).
As you can see, women have an incredibly important role in God’s church throughout the ages. That hasn’t changed. However, even though men and women both serve the Lord in significant ways, we should not conclude that God has intended men and women to function in the same capacity.
Yet just because 1 Timothy 2:12 explicitly teaches that a woman is not to teach a man, women are nevertheless free to teach in many other ways. In fact, women are commanded to explain the gospel to everyone, including lost men (cf. Acts 18:26). Within the church, women may teach women and children. With men in the church, women should discuss spiritual matters in a manner that informs but is not authoritative. This does not mean that a man cannot learn from a woman’s conduct or from a conversation with a woman and apply what he learns to his life. Rather, what it means is that the woman’s purpose in talking with a man is not to instruct him as a leader would.
Of course, Paul’s limitation on women in teaching and exercising authority over men has been challenged in other ways. Some suggest his words in 1 Timothy 2:12, “I do not allow,” are his personal preference, but not something for the church at large. However, this undermines Paul’s apostolic authority; he commonly spoke in the first person in directing the church (1 Timothy 2:1, 8, 9). Others even contend that Paul was simply wrong, but this must be rejected on the grounds of the doctrine of inspiration of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16).
Even though we can conclude that a woman should not assume the office of a pastor or elder within the church, it is clear that women are important to the church and do important things. The woman who fulfills the role God established for her is not inferior in any way to a man; rather, she is acting as a godly woman.
A Powerful Influence in the Church
While it is abundantly clear that women are not to be pastors or elders, because doing so would place them in a leadership role over men (1 Timothy 2:11–14; 1 Corinthians 14:34, 35), there are other things that women can and should do. Their ministry revolves around support, service, and ministry to women and children.
For instance, women can teach other women. “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient totheir own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:3–5). Therefore, mature Christian women are to disciple younger women, teaching them to exercise self-control, to be affectionate to their own husbands, to correct their children wisely, to be restrained in their passions and desires, to be modest, and to be upright in character.
Further, women should minister with the Word to other women. In Acts 21:8–11, Philip the evangelist has four unmarried daughters who minister in this way. While some point to this passage as evidence that women can be pastors, the context shows differently. Paul stayed with Philip and his family and was ministered to, but when God wanted to reveal something to Paul prophetically, He did not use any of Philip’s daughters. He used a male prophet from another city to instruct Paul.
Women can also share the gospel in a private context. For instance, Priscilla and Aquila shared the gospel with Apollos privately. It was a team effort, but it is clear from the passage that Priscilla took part (Acts 18:26). I believe the Bible allows that women can share the gospel with a man in a non-public setting if the opportunity presents itself, as long as: 1) it is done with the husband’s permission; 2) it is done discreetly; and 3) it is done in a way that avoids the appearance of evil.
Women should also be involved in supporting roles in the church and missionary work. Philippians 4:2–4 says, “I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.”
Servants of the Church
Even though the Lord has chosen many women to serve as prophets through the ages, He has never hinted that a woman should be ordained as a priest. Pastors and elders, of course, are roughly the New Testament equivalent to the Old Testament priests. Pastors and elders lead out in communion, which is the New Testament equivalent of offering a sacrifice—a role that was performed by a man. And while many priests were prophets, no women prophets were priests. Amram and Jochebed had three children—Miriam, Aaron, and Moses (Exodus 7:1; 5:20). All three were prophets, but only the boys served as priests.
Of course, women have served a vital role in the church from the very beginning, but men were assigned the role of church leadership. The apostles were all men, the churches were started by men, the Scripture was written by men under inspiration, and the churches were led by men. This does not mean that women are less capable of teaching than men; it simply means that God created us this way. Perhaps by spending more of our time understanding God’s purpose in creating this structure, we’ll find lasting satisfaction—rather than trying to find it by bucking against the teachings of God’s Word.
Romans 16:1,?2 says, “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also” (emphasis supplied).
The word translated servant is the Greek word diakonos (dee-ak’-on-os). It literally means “to run on errands; an attendant, a waiter at tables or in other serving duties.” The word in the masculine gender, diakoneo(s) (dee-ak-on-eh’-o), appears in the New Testament about 68 times and is translated as “serve, minister, administer.” Every time but five, the word refers to the office of a deacon that can be held only by men (1 Timothy 3:8–13; Acts 6:1–7). I bring this up because some say that Phebe held the office of a deacon. She did not. She was a servant, a helper around the church, and she succoured (assisted, helped, or was hospitable) to many such as Paul.
In 1 Timothy 5:9,?10, we learn, “Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.” I have turned us to this passage because it gives the qualifications for a widow considered worthyof regular support by the local church. She was to have a history of good works, have been a faithful mother, hospitable to strangers, and willing to serve fellow Christians in humble ways. In short, she was to have a history of diligent labor for the Lord. One such example is Tabitha, or Dorcas, found in Acts 9. She made clothes for many of the believers; she was a woman with a true servant’s heart.
Embracing Our Roles
F. B. Meyer said, “I used to think that God’s gifts were on shelves one above the other and that the taller we grew in Christian character the more easily we could reach them. I now find that God’s gifts are on shelves one beneath the other and that it is not a question of growing taller but of stooping lower.” Remember, it was Mary Magdalene—who was content to kneel at Jesus’ feet—who was also honored to be the first to see the Lord after His resurrection and share that good news with others (John 20:17).
Submission is the putting of oneself under the authority of another. It is an act of humility, something that both men and women in our churches should practice much more. Within the church, Paul teaches that women ought to submit to the authority of men in the church. But this must never be an excuse to foster inequality. Christ submitted to the Father, yet He is equal to the Father in worth and essence. Therefore, submission is about order, not value!
At the same time, there is a tremendous problem of ignoring the clear statements of Scripture in respect to the role of women in the church. Christians who sweep aside plain statements of Scripture as outdated traditions or local customs are building on a foundation of shifting sand. Soon every other Bible truth will be in danger of sliding away, so that even the Lord’s Supper, baptism, and marriage will one day be mere ancient traditions that no longer apply to a politically correct world. We should not undermine the Scriptures so easily.
The fact of the Bible is that there is not a single example of a woman being ordained as a priest, pastor, or elder. Indeed, Jesus only ever ordained men. Was He just conforming to the popular customs of the day? Well, the truth is that in His time, most of the pagan religions had women priests. Moreover, the notion that Jesus confined Himself to following the traditions of His day is completely opposite of His teachings. He said, “Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?” (Matthew 15:3). Jesus laid down His life in defense of truth, irrespective of popular trends. We should always be willing to do the same.
When the Lord made woman, it was the crowning act of His creation. So this isn’t about honor or pride or our social standing before humans. It’s about following the plain teaching of the Bible. Interestingly, the Bible uses a woman as a symbol of His precious church. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25). In Scripture, we find the greatest success comes to the church when she humbly embraces her role to serve Christ in saving others.
Before the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the apostles were striving for higher position and arguing among themselves about who was the greatest. The Holy Spirit was poured out on them only after they humbled themselves and resolved to accept the calling God had placed upon them. I know the Lord wants to shower His Spirit upon His people again, but first we must turn away from the politically correct teachings of the world and with the mind of Christ humbly submit to the clear teachings of His Word.

Compromise Conformity and Courage

By Doug Batchelor
An Amazing Fact
Because of its unusual growth habits, the tropical Banyan tree is known as a “strangler fig.” These large trees usually start life when their seed is deposited by a bird high in the foliage of another tree. The Banyan’s roots descend over the trunk of the host tree seeking out the soil below. Once they have rooted themselves, the roots of the strangler fig rapidly thicken and lengthen. Where the fig roots cross each other they fuse, thus creating a lattice around the host tree’s trunk. Gradually they starve the host tree and prevent it from growing by robbing all its light, water, and nutrients. Eventually the Banyan tree chokes the host until it dies and rots away, leaving the strangler fig standing in its place.
In a similar manner, as the seeds of creeping compromise are tolerated in God’s remnant church, spiritual life and fruit are being sapped away.
Taking a Stand
The ancient Greek storyteller Aesop provided a colorful fable explaining how bats came to live in the dark. There was a war between the beasts of the field and the birds, and when the birds were winning the war, the bat would fly around and say, “I’m a bird. Look at me fly! I’m a bird.” But later, the beasts began to win, so the bat dropped to the ground and said, “I’m a beast. See me crawl! I’m a beast.” Pretty soon, both the birds and the beasts got disgusted with the bat trying to play both sides of the war. Together they banished his kind to live in caves and only come out in the dark. In wanting to make everybody happy, he ultimately made nobody happy.
Everyone, like this bat, yearns to be accepted. But for the dedicated Christian, it is impossible to have both the acceptance of the world and the approval of our heavenly Father. Jesus said, “No servant can serve two masters” (Luke 16:13). And James put it this way: “Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (James 4:4). Thus according to God’s Word, it is impossible for a Christian to enjoy the acceptance of the world and all its sinful pleasures while simultaneously enjoying the peace and assurance that come from a saving relationship with Jesus. “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3).
But the sad truth is that millions of professing Christians around the world are searching for a way to strike a comfortable compromise between their convictions and the wicked world in which we live. I feel passionate about this issue because I also struggle with the insidious yet gradual influence of compromise and conformity in my own walk with the Lord. We are under relentless pressure to conform to the world. The devil is always offering to negotiate our values and principles. He rarely uses an all-out frontal assault, but rather by virtue of internal erosion where, little by little, we are pressured to compromise our beliefs in small increments.
Compromising with the devil is deadly to the spirit and always fails in bringing any lasting satisfaction. Our Lord clearly told us we cannot play the middle. “He that is not with me is against me” (Matthew 12:30). And as the Chinese say, “You cannot cross the river with your feet in different boats.” In reality, it is impossible to truly compromise with the devil, because any attempt to compromise with Satan will ultimately become total capitulation. Only by constant dependence on God and personal vigilance can we hack off the tentacles of this monster.
Good and Bad Compromise
Now compromise is not a dirty word. Many times it is a wonderful principle that helps provide and maintain peace and unity within relationships. Compromise in a marriage encourages domestic tranquility. On frigid days in the winter, I like setting the thermostat to 75 degrees, but my wife Karen prefers a more economical 68 degrees. So we compromise at 72 degrees and get along well. This kind of compromise on “nonessential” issues shows a meek and humble spirit.
But when Christians begin to compromise elements of truth, sacrificing biblical moral principles, for the sake of achieving peace, it can be eternally fatal. In the words of Martin Luther; “Peace if possible, truth at all cost.”
Satan’s primary goal for believers is to, little by little, buff down your resolve, getting you to concede an inch here and an inch there, until before you realize what has happened, your convictions have been displaced by his ethics and the proverbial frog has been boiled.
Even in a short book like this, it is tempting to launch a moral Blitzkrieg targeting multiple areas where the church is compromising. I could parade a list of Christian standards that have been sacrificed on the altar of compromise to gain acceptance with the world. I could write about the dangerous inroads of worldly music and “contemporary” worship styles, unchecked materialism and the subsequent debt, the Babylonian diet and health practices, absurd and suggestive dress and adornment, and the blizzard of popular entertainment that is spiritually numbing the minds of professed believers. I could even take on the most dangerous of all conformity: the watered-down, generic theology in which believers are never called to deny self and take up their crosses. Each one of these compromises have neutralized peace in the hearts of believers, diluted the potency of the gospel, and strangled church growth.
Alas, the limited space will not permit me to unpack each of these issues in detail. So instead I will direct your attention to the broader principles that lead to compromise and conformity and how we can resist the temptation to fall in line with the devil.
One Size Fits All
I recently bought a baseball cap at an airport convenience store. It’s not the cheapest place to do your shopping, but I forgot to pack mine. (A baseball cap is a necessity for my bald head on airplanes!) All the baseball caps hanging on the rack said, “one size fits all.” I was doubtful this generic sizing system would accommodate my large noggin. But to my astonishment, it fit! It was designed to conform to anybody’s head.
I have discovered that most Christians want a theology that will comfortably accommodate the sins in their life. But a fallen man’s sinful life is not a one-size-fits-all relationship with God. Is God to conform His will to suit our desires, or is the gospel supposed to transform our lives to fit God’s will? Paul gives us the answer; “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1, 2). We should not be conformed but transformed.
Don’t Compromise With Sin
The story of Joseph provides an inspiring example of how we can successfully avoid compromising our convictions. While the Egyptian captain Potiphar was away on business, his two-timing wife attempted to seduce Joseph, his most trusted servant. Joseph was probably tempted to consider the benefits of that forbidden relationship—perhaps he could have earned higher wages with less work and enjoyed more prestige in his household with a manipulating lover on his side. In the least, it seems he would have avoided jail time for spurning her advances.
Thus it must have been a powerful temptation for a single, healthy young man to compromise his principles for power and pleasure. Yet even with all the whisperings of the devil, Joseph knew it was wrong and refused to even consider the evil deed.
“So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her (Genesis 39:10 NKJV). If you didn’t notice, not only did Joseph refuse to commit adultery, he also stayed away from the temptation.
When a jet aircraft starts its engines at the gate, the ground crew knows to stay far away from the intake of that powerful turbine. A few curious but careless workers lingering near the maw of one of these large engines have been literally vacuumed off the asphalt and vaporized. It is also true that if you compromise near forbidden boundaries, the deadly vortex of sin will suck you in like a category five tornado.
When you are being tempted by someone or something to compromise your convictions, steer as far away as you can from the edge of the evil. Don’t let sin work on you, whittling down your resolve. Eve wandered too close to the forbidden tree and then waited to hear Satan’s rationalizations. As soon as she saw that tree and heard the serpent question God’s truth, she should have run for cover. The Word of God commands us to flee from temptation (1 Timothy 6:11).
Just a Little
It’s not very popular today to speak out against sin, especially those that have been generally accepted by the church. Those who do speak out can count on being called uncompromising and legalistic. I know, because it has happened to me many times. As just a small example, I once attended a Christian wedding reception where someone poured champagne in the glass at my seat even though I didn’t ask for it. A little surprised, I politely protested, saying, “No thank you. I don’t drink.”
The host assured me, “This champagne is only eight-percent alcohol. It won’t get you drunk.”
“But I don’t drink any alcohol,” I affirmed. Obviously annoyed, the host answered, “We’re just celebrating a wedding tradition. Don’t you want to offer your best wishes and toast the bride and groom?” He even suggested that I put the glass to my lips and pretend to drink. It was as if the devil himself was saying, “After all, everyone else is doing it.”
“Don’t you care about them?” “Just do it this once.” “Don’t be a fanatic.” These familiar rationalizations often precede a compromise. But we have to say no. “Make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof” (Romans 13:14). Wanting to avoid even the appearance of evil, I refused to even hold a glass of alcohol in my hand (1 Thessalonians 5:22).
Another familiar mantra of those who endorse worldly compromise is “balance.” I can’t count how many times I have been approached and told I need “more balance.” But when it is carefully evaluated, their definition of balance is usually to conform our Christian standards to worldly values. It sounds something like this: “It’s okay to take the family to the football game on Sabbath once in a while. You need to have balance.” In other words, they are recommending that we balance our holiness with a little sin. It appears that to them, being Christ-like is being out of balance.
Compassionate Compromise?
Another popular rationalization used for compromising Christian standards is ostensibly to make Christianity more attractive to the world. This was the approach taken by some church leaders in the days of Constantine.
The Roman and Greek pagans loved their idols. The second commandment regarding idolatry was a real stumbling block that prevented countless pagans from easily embracing Christianity. The thought of defacing or destroying their precious idols represented a tremendous struggle for these devout but superstitious pagans.
So in the interest of evangelism, some church leaders suggested, “Why not allow them to rename their idols after Christian heroes and saints? Then after they come into the church, we will gradually educate them to abandon their idols.” But you know the rest of the story—instead of the church converting the pagans, the pagans converted the church. It is how things like this typically work. Whenever the church attempts to compromise a Christian standard under the pretense of making conversion less traumatic, the world converts the church by making sin much more palatable.
Compromise or Combat
In the time of Ezra and Nehemiah, the Jews began to rebuild the temple that had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. In Ezra 4, the Bible records, “Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple … they said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him.” But the Jews knew these neighboring nations commingled the worship of the true God with Assyrian pagan gods.
How did Israel respond? They “said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord.” They made the right choice, refusing to let an unconverted pagan influence to define in any way how they built the Lord’s holy temple. But then catch this: “Then the people of the land,” that is those who just offered to help, “troubled them in building.” Suddenly, their peace-offering neighbors showed their true colors and became their harassing enemies.
Don’t miss this important reality. If you stand up for what’s right and do not get involved in apostate alliances, you’ll be persecuted for it. First the devil’s approach will be, “Let’s just work together. Let’s all love each other. Compromise a little on your convictions; we’ll compromise a little on ours, and then we’ll be united. After all, unity is so important!” If you don’t fall for that trap and take a stand for truth, they will become your worst enemy, which really tells you where their hearts were in the first place.
This is a vitally important lesson as we head into the last days, because eventually all the world’s religions will make concessions to form a united religious front that will ultimately promote the worship of the beast power. If we are developing a pattern now of sacrificing our convictions for the illusion of peace, we are paving the way in preparation to worship the beast. “Those who have yielded step by step to worldly demands, and conformed to worldly customs, will then yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprisonment, and death” (Prophets and Kings, p. 188).
A Fear of Offending
Have you ever heard about the pastor who did not want to offend his wealthy congregation? He said, “Dear brethren, unless you consider repenting, in a measure, and be a bit converted, as it were, you will possibly, I regret to say, be damned to some extent.”
In reality a great percentage of compromise and conformity worms its way into our lives and the church because nobody wants to offend anybody. We are trained from our earliest years to be polite and considerate—to comply with people’s requests and not do anything that might upset somebody. But Jesus taught that it is not possible to preach the gospel without causing some offense (Galatians 5:11).
Suppose you should develop a small spot of malignant skin cancer, but the dermatologist, not wanting to upset you, told you it was poison ivy. Would he or she be your friend? By its very nature, the convicting essence of the gospel turns a blazing light on our hearts to peel back our layers of hypocrisy and expose our selfish motives and impure thoughts.
John Wesley was apparently riding along a road one day when it dawned on him that in the past three days, he had not suffered the slightest persecution. Not a single brick, egg, or verbal insult had been thrown at him for three entire days. Alarmed, he stopped his horse and exclaimed, “Can it be that I have sinned and am backslidden?”
Slipping from his horse, Wesley went down on his knees and began pleading with God to show him where, if any, there had been a fault he committed. At that exact moment, a rough fellow on the other side of the hedge, hearing the prayer, looked across and recognized the unconventional pastor. “I’ll fix that preacher,” he said, picking up a brick and tossing it over the hedge. Although the brick missed its mark and fell harmlessly beside Wesley, the thrilled preacher leapt to his feet joyfully exclaiming, “Thank God, all is well. I still have His presence.”
The apostles were all slain or imprisoned for their faith because their message offended somebody. “All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12). I believe one reason we do not see more severe persecution of Christians in North America today is because we have compromised so much with the world that the offense of the gospel has been greatly diluted.
A Straight Path
Cache River is among the most serpentine streams in the world. It is useless for navigation because it winds 180 miles while only covering a distance of 35 miles, basically wasting 140 miles in bends and turns. The reason a river becomes crooked is because it follows the path of least resistance, the same reason that Christians become crooked. But the path of the Christian should be more like a tight rope than a meandering trail.
Moses told the children of Israel just before his death, “Therefore you shall be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you” (Deuteronomy 5:32, 33).
Luke 4 records the devil’s chilling attempt to get Christ to compromise. “And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. … All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them. … If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine” (vs. 5–7). The devil wanted to make a deal. He wanted Christ to consider the option, to negotiate a treaty to end the great controversy between good and evil. Satan implied Jesus could avoid the cross and rule the world if He would only give Satan worship. Everybody could live happily ever after.
But what did Jesus say? “Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (vs. 8). Jesus would not even consider it. This was the same answer Christ gave Peter when the disciple suggested Jesus shouldn’t go to the cross. Sometimes the devil even works through those closest to us, but when we’re tempted to compromise Christian principles and convictions, we need to learn how to say, “Get thee behind me, Satan. I am not going to do it.”
Compromise Killed Christ
In the events surrounding the trial of Christ, we can see that compromise ultimately crucified the Lord. In John 18, while being interviewed by Pontius Pilate, Jesus says, “I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice” (vs. 37). Pilate’s response, “What is truth?”, is a telling indicator of the vacillating ruler’s cynical attitude about absolute truth.
In the Roman Empire, everybody debated everything. (It’s not much different in America today, is it?) One philosopher in Rome encouraged every person to debate both sides of every issue, hoping to broaden the minds of the citizenry. But Augustus eventually evicted the man because the people ended up thinking of truth as something fluid and relative—nobody would stand up for any clear definite truth. No one would take a stand, because every position had some rationalizing argument against it.
In this case, the truth was very clear and Pilate openly admitted that Jesus was innocent. “He went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all” (vs. 38). Yet instead of taking a stand for truth and releasing Jesus as innocent, Pilate sought to compromise his conviction of truth to win approval, a behavior that frequently plagues politicians.
Wanting to appease the majority, Pilate explains that he will have Christ beaten and then released. Yet if Jesus is innocent, why have Him beaten? The answer is once you begin to walk down the road of compromise, no matter where you stop, the devil will pick you up and complete the walk for you. You have already signaled your weakness to him by displaying a willingness to negotiate with wrong if the price is right. From then on it is like trying to climb a flagpole made of ice. Once you begin sacrificing your convictions, it is very easy to slide down into ruin.
Sensing Pilate’s weakness, Satan used the crowd to press the vacillating ruler all the way for crucifixion. Pilate started down the road of negotiating with evil, and that’s where the devil wanted him. That’s why when Pilate attempted to outsmart the devil, it backfired. He offered them Barabbas as a compromise instead of Jesus. Pilate paraded the cold-blooded killer in front of the throngs as an example of real evil to contrast with the example of a sinless Christ. He must have thought to himself, “They just want to see a crucifixion so I’ll offer them a compromise, and they’ll obviously pick Jesus.” He never dreamed they would ask him to release Barabbas, but that’s exactly what they did.
Finally, Pilate’s little concession of compromise got to the place where it was completely out of his hands. In vain, “When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it” (Matthew 27:24). But was he really clean? He had declared the Savior just but conformed his sentence to the pressure of the crowd.
Likewise, when we begin to compromise with truth, and our actions finally get out of hand and the consequences come full and hard, we won’t be able to claim innocence either. So once you start thinking of going down the road of compromise, remember Pilate. Remember that Jesus died because someone thought they could compromise truth.
Be Courageous!
When I attended a New York military academy, the students would recite the Cadet’s Prayer in chapel: “Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be content with a half truth when the whole truth can be won. Endow us with courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy, that scorns to compromise with vice and injustice and knows no fear when truth and right are in jeopardy.” That kind of noble resolve is something you scarcely hear about anymore. It’s believed by many to be virtuous to compromise truth in the name of unity, but not according to the Bible.
Refusing to buckle to the pressure of compromise requires divine courage. The Lord told Joshua, “Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:7).
We don’t need to worry that God won’t forgive us if we sincerely repent of our compromise and turn the other way. But when we sin, when we stumble into error, we train ourselves to go down that road again. God can give you a new heart, but don’t think you can continue to compromise and not reap the consequences. Continued compromise can numb your conscience, until it is the fruit of conformity with the world.
Close Your Mind to Conformity
When it comes to compromising the Word of God, don’t have an open mind. You’re going to be called a conservative extremist for not accepting the standards of world. But don’t be intimidated when you are accused of being “close-minded.” It is good to be closed minded regarding the commandments of God. I have a wife with whom I have covenanted—I am not open-minded about anything else that would destroy that promise.
The devil is setting up the church in the last days by preaching a message of unity through compromise. Little by little, he’s softening up our resolve, encouraging us to make little concessions and compromises so that when that big test comes, he has us where he wants us.
Read Daniel 3 and bear with my loose paraphrase. Nebuchadnezzar said to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, “So you didn’t bow down? I’ll tell you what: I don’t want to lose you; you’re good workers. I’ll give you another chance and have the band play the music one more time. Perhaps you just want a little different song? But when you hear the sound, you need to bow down.”
But the three young Hebrews resolutely told the king he need not waste his time on them. “O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up” (Daniel 3:16–19). They didn’t negotiate, even when the devil tried to engage them.  The devil would rather have you die after you’ve disobeyed than die a martyr and be a victorious example. But if you die in this world upholding the Word, you will live in the next. So today we need to be faithful in that which is least. We may not think the little tests we face now are a matter of life and death, but if we can’t learn arithmetic with pennies, we will never understand it with dollars. If we compromise and conform now in the little things with no death threat hanging over our heads, what are we likely to do when we are threatened with imprisonment or death?
Stand!
When the children of Israel reached the borders of the Red Sea and their Egyptian masters were riding hard on their heels to capture and re-enslave them, the situation looked bleak. But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today” (Exodus 14:13).
Once we know that something is right according to God’s Word, our responsibility is to take our stand. God will do great things for those who stand up for Him. He is looking for representatives who will trust Him. “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him” (2 Chronicles 16:9).
When you stand firm for truth, your life will be a saving witness to your family, your friends, your neighbors, and even the heavenly agencies. God will look down from heaven and say, “Have you considered My servant, that there is none like that on the earth, one who fears me and shuns evil?” (See Job 1:8.)
But Christ has not left us to do this alone. He has provided His own armor to protect us. “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. … Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:11, 13). Just remember that the correct posture for those wearing the armor of God is to stand!
William Jennings Bryan said, “Never be afraid to stand with a minority that is right, for the minority which is right will someday be the majority. Always be afraid to stand with the majority that is wrong, for the majority that is wrong will someday be the minority.” Ellen White, one of my favorite Christian authors, said it like this: “The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold; men who in their inmost souls are true and honest; men who do not fear to call sin by its right name; men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole; men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall” (Education, p. 57).
With God all things are possible, including living a life without worldly conformity and compromise. Resolve now by His grace to stand on the Rock and resist the waves of compromise that are sweeping God’s children from the shores of salvation. And always remember that when you take your stand, you do not stand alone. Jesus stands with you.

The Seat of the Dragon

Part 1

Jesus said: „

Make sure that no man deceives you.‟

Satan cannot be exposed if we don‟t speak about him –this is not a way ofhonouring him, but exposing him. He will come to us as an angel of light and Jesus as well.

There are 2 contradicting „lights‟, one of which has the ability to deceive us. The point of the greatest interest is the point of the greatest contrast. Satan has been a liar from the beginning.

History of the Reformation of the sixteen Century

, J.H.Merle D‟aubigne,Book Vi, Chapter XII, Pp215, Martin Luther, 1483-1546 writes:“Luther..prover, by the revelations of Daniel and St. John, by the epistles of St. Paul, St. Peter,, and St. Jude, that the reign of Antichrist, predicted and described in the Bible, was the Papacy.

” Thomas Crammer, 14891556 inWorks by Crammer, Vol 1, pp6-7 wrote: “Whereof it followeth Rome to be the seat of antichristand the pope to be very antichrist himself. I could prove the same by many other scriptures, old writers and strong reasons

” (Referring to prophecies in Revelation and Daniel). In the book All

roads lead to Rome, Dorchestor House Publications, Michael de Semlyen, pp205, 1991: “A great cloud of witnesses: Wycliffe, Tyndale, Luther, Calvin,

Bunyan, the translator of the King James Bible and the men who published the Westminster and Baptist confessions of Faith; Sir Isaac Newton, Wesley Whifield, Jonathan Edwards and more recently Spurgeon, Bishop J.C. Ryle and Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones; these men among countless others all saw the office of the Papacy as the antichrist.

This has been common knowledge for many years. Why don‟t the media tell us these things? Why don‟t we know? Because it‟s being covered up.

Words spoken by Our Lady of LaSalette to Melanie Calvat in 1846 AD, afully approved Church Apparition: “

Rome will lose faith and become the seatof the Antichrist.”

W.F. Strojie, a conservative Roman Catholic scholar in TheLast Days of the Catholic Church, 1978, pp3 writes: “I scoff at the notion that anyone other than a pope could be the antichrist.

The false system of worship headed up by the pope will deceive the whole word.

.but how?

In Rev 13:2 „

and the beast (antichrist) that i saw was like a leopard; its feet

were like a bear‟s and its mouth was like a lion‟s mouth. And to it the dragon (satan)gave his power and his throne and great authority.‟ Rev 12:7,9 „And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan

..‟ Also Rev 20:2. Michael means

he who is what God is‟.

The

war in heaven was about worship and is continued today on earth.

As most people will not bow down to satan in his true form and character,

he will have to

trick us into worshipping him through deception. Math

24:4-

5 „And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man

deceive you

.

Satan cannot do this work on earth by himself therefore he gives his power

to a human being. We have to look for the

link between them.

Rev 13:3-

4: „..all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped

the

dragon which gave power unto the beast‟.

In other words, the antichrist

beast will transfix humanity that the entire world will wonder after him and

by doing that, the

worship that we give the Papacy or the antichrist beast,

is actually being

channelled through to satan. So where satan gives the

papacy his throne, his power and his authority, he does so that he (satan)

can receive worship. So

by acknowledging the papacy and by following

what he says we must do, we are actually channelling worship through

to satan

.

The

The Obelisk

The obelisk has been a part of pagan worship from the days of

antiquity. Obelisks have played a large part in the worship of Egypt.

Originally, the obelisk was associated with

sun worship. Pagans believed

that the obelisk also had a

sexual significance. Realizing that through

sexual union, life was produced, the phallus was considered, along with the

sun, a symbol of life. In order for the obelisk to carry out its intended

symbolism, it was placed upright

erect. Thus, the obelisk pointed up toward

the sun. ..the obelisk was often placed at the entrance of pagan temples

the Pillar (obelisk) among early peoples, the Egyptian obelisk was worshiped

affiliations and yet,

The Bride of Christ

28 Nov
The Bible says there is but one body, or church, into which Jesus calls His end-time people – the bride of Christ. To some, this is unnerving, as there are thousands of different churches today that call themselves Christian.  Virtually every one claims to be God’s church, yet they each differ widely in biblical interpretation, faith, and practice.  It’s quite impossible for the honest seeker of truth to investigate the claims of each one. However, we can be thankful that Jesus has solved this dilemma for us by describing His church in such detail that you can easily identify it!  That description, vivid and powerful, is found in Revelation 12 and 14, and it will thrill you with amazing truths that will help you in the end times.  Please read Revelation 12:1-17 before beginning your journey of discovery into these transforming truths.

1. By what prophetic symbol does Jesus represent His true church?

“I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman.” Jeremiah 6:2.  “And say unto Zion, Thou art my people.” Isaiah 51:16.

Answer:   We learned in Study Guide 22 that Jesus symbolizes His true, pure church (Zion) as a pure woman and an apostate church as a harlot.  A few other texts which also utilize this symbolism are 2 Corinthians 11:2 Ephesians 5:22, 23 and Revelation 19:7, 8.

2. In Revelation 12:1, Jesus symbolizes His church as a woman “clothed with the sun,” with “the moon under her feet,” and wearing “a crown of twelve stars.”  What do these symbols mean?

Answer:   A.  The sun represents Jesus, His gospel, and His righteousness. “The Lord God is a sun.” Psalms 84:11.  (See also Malachi 4:2.)  Without Jesus there is no salvation (Acts 4:12).  More than anything else, Jesus wants His church to overflow with His presence and glory.
B. “The moon under her feet” represents the sacrificial system of the Old Testament.  As the moon reflects the light of the sun, so the sacrificial system was helpful spiritually only as it reflected light from the Messiah to come (Hebrews 10:1).
C.  The “crown of twelve stars” represents the work of the 12 disciples, which crowned the early years of the New Testament church.

The baby mentioned in Revelation chapter 12 is Jesus.

The baby mentioned in Revelation chapter 12 is Jesus.

3. Next, the prophecy states that the woman is in labor, about to deliver a baby who would one day rule all nations with a rod of iron.  She then delivered the “man child,” and later He was taken up to God’s throne in heaven (Revelation 12:1, 2, 5).  Who was this baby?

Answer:   The baby was Jesus.  He will one day rule all nations with a rod of iron (Revelation 19:13-16; Psalms 2:7-9).  Jesus, who was crucified for our sins, was raised from the dead and ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9-11).  His resurrection power in our lives is one of Jesus’ essential gifts to His people (Philippians 3:10).

The great red dragon is Satan, who at Jesus' birth was working through pagan Rome.

The great red dragon is Satan, who at Jesus’ birth was working through pagan Rome.

4. Revelation 12:3, 4 introduces “a great red dragon” who hated the “man child” and tried to kill him at birth.  You may remember this dragon from Study Guide 20.  Who was the dragon?

Answer:   The dragon represents Satan, who was cast out of heaven (Revelation 12:7-9) and who was working at the time of Jesus’ birth through the pagan Roman empire.  The ruler who tried to kill Jesus at birth was Herod, a king under pagan Rome.  He killed all the male babies of Bethlehem, hoping that one of them would be Jesus (Matthew 2:16).

The

The “third part of the stars” represent the rebellious angels who were cast out of heaven with Lucifer.

5. What is the meaning of the “seven heads” and “ten horns” of the dragon, and of “the third part of the stars of heaven” being cast to the earth?

Answer:   A.  The “seven heads” represent the seven hills or mountains upon which Rome was built (Revelation 17:9, 10).  We have now encountered a beast with seven heads and 10 horns three times in our Study Guides (Revelation 12:3 13:1 17:3).
B.  The “ten horns” represent the governments, or nations, that support the major powers in their oppression of God’s people and church.  During pagan Rome’s tenure (Revelation 12:3, 4), they represented the 10 barbarian tribes that supported the papacy in eventually bringing down the Roman empire (Daniel 7:23, 24).  These tribes later became modern Europe.  In the last days, they represent all the nations of the world united in the end-time coalition (Revelation 16:14 17:12, 13, 16) which will support “Babylon the great” in her warfare against God’s people.
C. “The third part of the stars of heaven” are the angels who supported Lucifer in his insurrection in heaven and who were cast out with him (Revelation 12:9 Luke 10:18 Isaiah 14:12).
A Review and Summary
Thus far, the prophecy has covered the following Bible facts:
1. God’s true church appears, symbolized as a pure woman.
2. Jesus is born into the church.
3. Satan, working through King Herod of pagan Rome, tries to kill baby Jesus.
4. Satan’s plan is unsuccessful.
5. Jesus’ ascension is pictured.

Many millions were burned at the stake because of Satan's persecution.

Many millions were burned at the stake because of Satan’s persecution.

6. What did Satan do after he failed in his plan to destroy baby Jesus?

“He persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.”  Revelation 12:13.

Answer:   Since he was no longer able to attack Jesus personally, he aimed his fury and persecution at God’s church and His people.
Six Identifying Points In Revelation chapters 12 and 14, Jesus gives us six descriptive points to use in identifying His end-time church.  Watch for them as you study the remainder of this Study Guide.

God's people fled to the solitary places of the earth to escape persecution.

God’s people fled to the solitary places of the earth to escape persecution.

7. What did the woman (church) do to protect herself, and what is the “wilderness” spoken of in Revelation 12:6, 14?

Answer:   A. Verses 6 and 14 say, “The woman fled into the wilderness,” where she was protected for “a time, and times, and half a time” (or 1,260 literal years) from the wrath of Satan who was then working through papal Rome. The “two wings” represent the protection and support God gave the church during her time in the “wilderness” (Exodus 19:4 Deuteronomy 32:11). The time spent in the wilderness is the same 1,260-year period of papal prominence and persecution (A.D. 538 to 1798) that Jesus repeatedly mentioned in prophecy. One prophetic day equals one literal year (Ezekiel 4:6).
B. The term “wilderness” refers to the solitary places of earth (mountains, caves, forests, etc.) where God’s people could hide in seclusion and thus escape total annihilation (Hebrews 11:37, 38). And hide they did, the Waldenses, Albigenses, Huguenots, and many others. God’s people (His church) would have been obliterated if they had not fled and hid in the wilderness during this devastating persecution by the papacy. (In one 40-year period, “from the beginning of the order of the Jesuits, in the year 1540, to 1580, nine hundred thousand were destroyed. One hundred fifty thousand perished in the Inquisition in 30 years.” 1) At least 50 million people died for their faith during this 1,260-year time period. God’s church did not exist as an official organization during this 1,260-year time period. From A.D. 538 to 1798 it was alive but not identifiable as an organization. When it came out of hiding after the 1,260 years, it still had the same doctrine and characteristics as the apostolic church, which entered  the “wilderness” in A.D. 538.
Note:  We have now discovered our first two identification points for Jesus’ end-time church:
1. It would not exist officially as an organization between A.D. 538 and 1798.
2. It would arise and do its end-time work after 1798.
There are many loving, genuine Christians in churches that were officially in existence before 1798.  But none of these churches can be God’s end-time church into which Jesus is calling all His people, because Jesus’ end-time church had to arise after 1798. This means that most of the popular Protestant churches cannot be God’s end-time church because they existed officially before 1798.
1Albert Barnes, Notes on Daniel, comment on Daniel 7:25, p. 328.

A remnant of cloth is the last remaining portion of a bolt. It is exactly like the first piece from the same bolt.

A remnant of cloth is the last remaining portion of a bolt. It is exactly like the first piece from the same bolt.

8. In Revelation 12:17, God calls His end-time church the remnant.  What does the word “remnant” mean?

Answer:   It means the last remaining portion.  In reference to Jesus’ church, it means His church of the very last days, which is identical in doctrine to the apostolic church.

God's remnant church will keep His commandments and will also have the gift of prophecy.

God’s remnant church will keep His commandments and will also have the gift of prophecy.

9. In Revelation 12:17, what additional two-point description did Jesus give of His end-time remnant church?

Answer:   It would keep all the Ten Commandments, including the seventh-day Sabbath of the fourth commandment (John 14:15 Revelation 22:14).  It also would have the “testimony of Jesus”, which the Bible tells us is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10).  (Study Guide 24 will give a full explanation of the gift of prophecy.)
So here are Jesus’ next two points of identification for His end-time remnant church:
3. It will keep God’s commandments, including His seventh-day Sabbath of the fourth commandment.
4. It will have the gift of prophecy.
Remember that while hosts of sincere Christian people are found in churches that do not keep the Sabbath or have the gift of prophecy, none of these churches can be God’s remnant end-time church into which Jesus is calling all last-day Christians, because God’s end-time church will both keep God’s commandments and have the gift of prophecy.

God's remnant must be preaching the three angels' messages worldwide.

God’s remnant must be preaching the three angels’ messages worldwide.

10. What final two points of identification for God’s remnant does the book of Revelation provide?

Answer:   The final two points of the six are: (5) It will be a worldwide missionary church (Revelation 14:6), and (6) It will be preaching the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14:6-14, which are briefly summarized below.
A. God’s judgment is in session. Worship Him! God’s end-time church must be preaching that the judgment began in 1844 (see Study Guides 18 and 19).  It also calls upon people to “worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Revelation 14:7. How do we worship God as Creator?  God wrote the answer in the fourth commandment. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8, 11. So the first angel’s message commands all to worship God as Creator by keeping holy His seventh-day Sabbath, which He gave to us as a memorial of Creation.
B.  Come out of the fallen churches of Babylon.
C. Don’t worship the beast or receive his mark, which is Sunday as a holy day.  Beware of all counterfeits.
Note: Here are the final two identification points:
5. God’s end-time church will be a worldwide missionary church.
6. It will be preaching and teaching the three-point message of Revelation 14:6-14.
Now let’s review the six points that Jesus gives us for identifying His end-time remnant church:
1. It would not exist as an official organization between A.D. 538 and 1798.
2. It would arise and do its work after 1798.
3. It would keep the Ten Commandments, including the seventh-day Sabbath of the fourth commandment.
4. It would have the gift of prophecy.
5. It would be a worldwide missionary church.
6. It would be teaching and preaching Jesus’ three-point message of Revelation 14:6-14.

Jesus promises that all who sincerely apply His six specifications will find His remnant church.

Jesus promises that all who sincerely apply His six specifications will find His remnant church.

11. Now that we have established Jesus’ six identification points for His end-time remnant church, what does Jesus tell us to do, and with what results?

Answer:   “Seek, and ye shall find.” Matthew 7:7. Jesus hands you these six specifications and says, “Go find my church.”  He promises that those who seek for heavenly things will find them.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only one that fits all six specifications.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only one that fits all six specifications.

12. How many churches fit these six specifications?

Answer:   Jesus gave such distinctive and specific specifications that they fit only one church.  Jesus did not give vague generalities such as “There will be many good people in my church” and “There will also be some hypocrites.” How many churches would those two points fit? All of them.
Those two points also fit the corner grocery store and downtown civic clubs. They would fit everything, and thus mean nothing.  Instead, Jesus gave such pointed, specific, highly descriptive points that they fit one church and only one church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  Let’s double-check the specifications.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church:
1. Did not exist as an official organization between A.D. 538 and 1798.
2. Arose after 1798. It began to form in the early 1840s.
3. Keeps the Ten Commandments, including the fourth – God’s holy seventh-day Sabbath.
4. Has the gift of prophecy.
5. Is a worldwide missionary church, working in 208 of the 236 countries of the world.
6. Teaches and preaches Jesus’ great three-point message of Revelation 14:6-14.
Jesus asks you to take these six specifications and check for yourself. It is easy. You cannot miss.
Note: Please remember that there are many loving Christians in churches which these points do not fit, but no such church can be God’s end-time remnant into which He is calling all His people for today.

13. After one of Jesus’ children heeds His loving warning call and comes out of Babylon (Revelation 18:2, 4), what does Jesus ask him to do next?

“Ye are called in one body.” Colossians 3:15. “He [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church.” Colossians 1:18.

Answer:   The Bible says that God’s people are called into one body, or church.  Jesus asks those who leave Babylon to join the remnant church–of which He is the head.  Jesus said, “Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold.” John 10:16. He also calls them “my people” in both the Old Testament (Isaiah 58:1) and the New Testament (Revelation 18:4). Of His sheep outside His fold (church), He says, “Them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” “My sheep hear my voice, … and they follow me.” John 10:16, 27.

When God calls people out of Babylon, He asks them to join His remnant church. People join His remnant church by baptism.

14. How does one enter that body, or church?

“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles.” 1 Corinthians 12:13.

Answer:   We enter Jesus’ end-time remnant church by baptism.  (See Study Guide 9 for details on baptism.)

15. Does the Bible provide other evidence that Jesus has only one remnant church into which He is calling all of His people?

Answer:   Yes, it does. Let’s review it:
A. The Bible says there is only one true body, or church (Ephesians 4:4 Colossians 1:18).
B. The Bible says our day is like Noah’s day (Luke 17:26, 27).  How many ways of escape were there in Noah’s day?  Only one, the ark.  Once again, today, God has provided only one boat, or church, that will take His people safely through to His heavenly kingdom.  Be sure to get on the right boat!  The Bible says, “The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” Acts 2:47.  It was true in apostolic times it is still true today.

God promises that His remnant church will triumph gloriously.

16. What is the good news regarding God’s remnant church?

Answer:
A. Its central theme is “the everlasting gospel” of righteousness by faith in Jesus only (Revelation 14:6).
B. It is built on Jesus, the Rock (1 Corinthians 3:11; 10:4), and “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18.
C. Jesus died for His church (Ephesians 5:25).
D. Jesus describes His remnant church so plainly that it’s easy to identify.  He also describes the fallen churches and calls His people out of them. Satan will trap only those who keep their eyes and hearts shut.
E. Its doctrines are all true (1 Timothy 3:15).

17. What is the good news regarding God’s remnant people?

Answer:   They will:
A. Be saved in His heavenly kingdom (Revelation 15:2).
B. Overcome the devil by the “power” and “blood” of Jesus (Revelation 12:10, 11).
C. Be patient (Revelation 14:12).
D. Have Jesus’ faith (Revelation 14:12).
E. Find glorious freedom (John 8:31, 32).

18. Earth’s hour is very late. Jesus’ second coming immediately follows the giving of the three angels’ messages (Revelation 14:12-14).  What is Jesus’ urgent plea now to His people?

“Come thou and all thy house into the ark.” Genesis 7:1.

Answer:   In Noah’s day, only eight people (including Noah himself) heeded God’s invitation.  Jesus is waiting at the door of His end-time ark, or remnant church, for you.
Note: This is our eighth Study Guide in the thrilling series on the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14:6-14.  The final Study Guide of the series will discuss the gift of prophecy.

19. I am willing to heed Jesus’ call to come into the safety of His end-time remnant church.
